But at the same time I don't fundamentally believe in any religion, because I believe there are parts of the universe that man simply cannot understand, and making up a God to cover for a lack of understanding I can't deal with. I do believe in God, but I do not live by a strict dictated group of rules given by a "God" as it were.

But I have Christian friends, and even they agree that certain sections of the bible can't be taken as still relevant. When there are has been such a long time period for potential re-writes and such I find what I read in the bible hard to believe in part, and in context of potential re-writes I can see relevant reasons for such re-writes at certain periods of time. For example sex only during marriage, could, I'm not saying it was, but potentially it could have been implemented during the outbreak of syphilis about 600 years ago.

Again though it is all personal opinion.

I promise you, the Bible does not address masturbation AT ALL. I have a Christian book for Christian teenagers that deals with the subject of masturbation and it says that it is natural, almost literally everyone has done it, even in Biblical times.

The bible just gives some examples of bad things to do. The man in the bible story obviously had bad intentions. God didn't write those examples, men did to teach other men how to act.
