Jesus Christ I can't believe people can prevent themselves from doing what comes as a natural biological proces just because some dude wrote down some crap in a book two thousand years ago.

mmogoon

Masturbation is not required. Would you criticize people if they did it for the sake of virginity instead of the Bible?

Required? Required for what? It's required so we don't lose our minds out of sexual frustration.

Obviously, some people are strong enough to handle it. And secure enough to not go "I can't believe people are this nuts! I do it; so should they!" :|

..but the question is...what would YOU if you caught your son/daugther masturbating??

I'd freak out and close the door immediately, then the next day I'd act like nothing happened...

I'll probably scream "Hell No!" And run away.

I like the idea of purgatory. I first read/heard about it in Memnoch the Devil by Anne Rice. :o

The Scriptural support for Purgatory is extremely weak. I have seen two verses cited supporting it, and one is in the Apocrypha, several books that were intended for the original Canon but never made it in. The other is 1 Corinthians 3:10-15, which simply says:

10According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it.

11For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

12Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,

13each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work.

14If any man's work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward.

15If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

The highlighted part is boldened. But this doesn't indicate that it is after death.

[QUOTE="Thiago26792"]

Do you actually believe in God? Because if you are atheist you can have your own view of this.

Samwel_X

I'm not an atheist. But at the same time I don't fundamentally believe in any religion, because I believe there are parts of the universe that man simply cannot understand, and making up a God to cover for a lack of understanding I can't deal with. I do believe in God, but I do not live by a strict dictated group of rules given by a "God" as it were.

But I have Christian friends, and even they agree that certain sections of the bible can't be taken as still relevant. When there are has been such a long time period for potential re-writes and such I find what I read in the bible hard to believe in part, and in context of potential re-writes I can see relevant reasons for such re-writes at certain periods of time. For example sex only during marriage, could, I'm not saying it was, but potentially it could have been implemented during the outbreak of syphilis about 600 years ago.

Again though it is all personal opinion.

Any legitimate translation of the Bible is based on the earliest Hebrew records of the Old Testament books and the earliest Greek records of the New Testament books/epistles. Modern translations aren't revisions of AElfric's Old English translations of the Vulgate... nothing's been "added" through the years. If anything, things have been removed (the Apocrypha/Pseudopigrapha), but that's due to dubious authorship and/or them being BCE-timed books that have only survived in Greek.

As for the masturbation issue, it's mainly only addressed in Leviticus. By the New Covenant, however, it's more an issue of the lust that inevitably comes with it, not the act of orgasm.

A more modern idiom would be "saved by the skin of his teeth." It made sense in the era of Koine Greek.

Furthermore, Purgatory (or Gehenna) is something that first seemed to appear in Second Temple Judaism, and most of the works of that era aren't in most canons of Scripture (in other words, they're in between the Testaments). II Maccabees actually has an example of this, and is probably the main precedent for this idea (or praying for the dead).

If its your average two sided fence then "most" sides of the fence cant exist as its either one side of the fence which is not most because its not a majority, no sides of the fence because obviously thats not a majority or both sides of the fence which leaves no room for a least and so it is all and not most. If the fence was triangualr though you could have two out of three sides which is a most situation.

Do you actually believe in God? Because if you are atheist you can have your own view of this.

Frattracide

Where in Leviticus?

Lev. 15. It talks about discharges and emissions making a man unclean, though it also says that a woman is ceremonially unclean during her period. In other words, these were seen as natural happenings of the body, but it made you unclean (for a time) under Jewish law.

As I said, masturbation being a sin is mainly due to the lustful feelings and images that go along with it. It's implied more than explicitly stated.

So basically, existing is a sin.

Why was "Jewish law" given a huge font?
