Somewhat on topic, but can anyone remember if Mohammed was depicted back when they did the original "Super Best Friends" episode? It's a pretty old one that might pre-date 9/11, which means hysteria about extremists reacting probably would have been low... just wondering :P

guitarshr3dd3r

I remember that. And if you watch re-runs from pre-9/11, even today you can still catch him at the end of the theme. Funny how nobody notices that.

I noticed it too, I mean sure I was offended, seeing ALL these religious figures depicted like this, felt like it was a bit invading to others religions, but am I gonna threaten a life? no. I'll just save my thoughts in my happy place *runs to corner*

yea keep running to that corner. This is basically why this world is so degraded. Wrong and Right does not matter any more, the important thing is to smile to each other with a smurk and pretend that nothing happened.

Southpark makes fun of Scientology -> Scientologists complain, but whatever.

Southpark makes fun of Christianity -> Various complains, whatever.

Southpark makes of of Islam -> 1 death threat, anti-muslim sentiments arise in response.

If the Muslims just complained like everyone else instead of issuing death threats, and Comedy Central didn't censor anything, this would just be another South Park episode which nobody will care about a week after it aired, just like the original Super Best Friends.

Its all an unnessary joke. If people are offended, clearly you shouldnt do it. If you going to intimidate them, then you only gonna cost some lives with the extremists out there. If people are all support of this with their bogus views of "freedom of speech", then this basically has put all of Malcom X and Martin Luthor King on beating racism in the bin as people nowerdays are obsessed with freedom of speech without any limit of pissing off people and because its only a matter of time this becomes a norm along with religion insults.

Personally I think the only solution to the muhammed 'issue' is to ban anything which contains the word.

htekemerald

My name contains the word Muhammad so you wanna ban me?

I disagree.. there will always be a shock value. They will just exist within different realms of thought.. than they do currently. Humans will not reach the point they are so desensitized by the media that they find nothing offensive.

I don't think it's censorship if a network decides to withdraw a show in the face of some comments some wacko posted on some website. I can't see any reason I'd ever want to draw Mohammed but nor do I think it should be (or ever will be) illegal.

If people desperately want to draw pictures of Mohammed for no other reason than to piss of muslims, I personally think they're as much a bunch of jackasses as an abortionist setting up his clinic right in the middle of a Catholic district - both are examples of unnecessary and juvenile incitement.

On the other hand, I strongly doubt that this is the first time they've ever gotten a "death threat".

If a scientologist or a Christian had sent Comedy Central a "death threat", do you think there was really a chance in hell of Comedy Central censoring anything?

You seem to have a fundamental problem with your logic: We are not Muslim, thus we CAN draw muhammed. Try standing up for free speech once and awhile ;) Not all beliefs deserve respect. If these people were fanatical about the earth being flat, would you defend it? If so, thats irrational. Religion absolutely never deserves respect.

Drawing is a clear indication to insult muslims. Also, it is a freedom of speech (typical american response), but that said, this beats the purpose of racism, if people can express their views on racial discrimination and feel black people are inferior to white people. Infact, freedom of speech beats the purpose of any form of morality and respect within the world. Maybe to you Muslims dont deserve respect, but taking the micky outta the dead is just purely harsh. I mean if someone drew an insulting picture of a very close dead relative, that person will retaliate and take offence. Same applies to this drawing.

That wasn't an error in his logic. You can respect a belief and disagree at the same time. Though i don't think that respect should be enforced by law, and death threats in respose is incredibly disproportianate to drawing the prophet.

No problem with my logic, Muslims do not want anyone drawing Muhammed, not just Muslims. Again, it's just a respect factor for our fellow man, not their beliefs. I always stand up for free speech, but think you should be held accountable for speech that's offensive (say the KKK). I'm an Atheist and believe that a Religion that anyone believes passionately about deserves respect, IMO it's called being decent.

That is very subjective. If we walked away from every insult and bad mouthing, you would be nothing but a coward. If you go to school and people mimick you everyday, draw pictures of someone close to you whos passed on, would you not retaliate? I certainly would. its not simply changing the channell as people have now started to take things too far, Its becoming a public thing, people in London are holding protests just to close mosques, the drawing news spreads through news papers, tv, and other sources. We are expressing our views to why its wrong, so if we want to speak on something thats indispicable and wrong, its only our right to do so. Infact, muslims aint even asking for much. All they have said is not to draw Prophet Muhammad, and while some may be a little barbaric to the way they react, the only thing its gonna cause if people continue to do it and continue mimicking is Havok.

Let's suppose someone made a cartoon (comedy) about a close family member of yours getting beaten and abused in the name of free speech and teh funny, do you think your only likely reaction would be to not watch and take it? I don't like most effects of religion either but it's not really a huge surprise that people get upset when the things they hold sacred are mocked.

[QUOTE="Theokhoth"]Offending billions of people for the hell of it is not what I classify as an ever-progressive world. How bout this: We don't act like assclowns to people for the luls, and in return we don't freak out over the smallest detail when all one wants to do is inquire. There, everyone's happy, society progresses.topgunmv
You're assuming that billions of people find it offensive.

There are barely even a billion Muslims. Why are we speaking in plural?

By the way; Sweden decided to not even show those two episodes mentioned because they were too afraid. The dude over at Comedy Central in Sweden said that ensuring that their employees won't feel threatened or get hurt is higher priority than sending these two episodes.

Crazy notion, isn't it? I mean, when the choice comes down to protecting employees or showing a comedy show, it should be obvious that the show holds higher priority.

And thats ladies and gentlemen the most civilized thing i have ever come by. You know this whole south park episode thing, it was the first time for me to argue with other people not from gaza about the whole Mohammad issue. I have to say I Am surprised and very very disappointed. What I used to think about as common sense turned out to be so deformed and neglected. I always thought Muslims and middle east in general overreact and hostile toward the west for no apparent reason. Guess I was wrong.

[QUOTE="d4nny-"] It is funny. Sorry to burst your bubble. You cannot claim what is and isn't funny.

d4nny-

Then your humour is just sickening. Lets see how you like it when someone draws someone like your mum or dad when they pass away and makes mockery of it.

I hate my mother and father, so what next?

Then clearly you are the problem then.

Yes its perfectly acceptable to draw a picture of someone who died and use them in a comical nature... :|

Odd rule. Any recent kidnap victims you'd like to have a laugh at?

Yes. Well not recently, but Dave Chappelle is amazing.

[QUOTE="Atheists_Pwn"][QUOTE="btaylor2404"]I don't think it's ok. Islam strictly forbids images of the Prophet. It's one of their core beliefs/teachings. It's not an insane belief, or asking every human in the world to do something outlandish for Islam, just don't use his image. If the same were the case in Christianity all hell would have broken loose over here, and i venture to bet it would have never aired. Some things should be respected, even if you don't believe in it at all.RazMaTaz0121

I can barely understand what youre saying at all, because its pretty incoherent. But anyway, people draw insulting things about jesus all the time, and while christians do whine about it they arent threatening anyone. Islam CAN be offended you know, its perfectly fine if theyre offended.

You know exactly what I meant by public figure.

Whats it that they say, If you can't come up with an argument you play semantics?

Ofcourse, then let them retaliate. If they wanna bomb your country and cause havok, then go ahead. At the end of the day, if you initiate it, then will cause harm. Seems pretty simple no? Alot of non developed countries do live under harsher conditions, hence why theyre more barbaric.

That wasn't an error in his logic. You can respect a belief and disagree at the same time. Though i don't think that respect should be enforced by law, and death threats in respose is incredibly disproportianate to drawing the prophet.

There was an error in logic, because its only muslims who cant draw him, as they are the only ones who actually believe that stuff. Anyone who blindly accepts faith is irrational in that regard. This should not be respected, but cured with education.
