I don't count firearms as a basic right for everyone to purchase. Then again, I'm not an American.

Scarebaby

Again, I think people should be free to own WHATEVER they want, no matter where in the world they live, so long as they have the means and the purpose for it. Obviously, we can take this to hypothetical extremes to the point of absurdity (i.e. civilians acquiring nuclear armaments legally) and argue for several pages, but I'm not into that sort of thing.

I'll just say that I respect your right to your perspective, and you can choose whether or not my view is respectable and that can be that.:)

[QUOTE="Omni-Slash"][QUOTE="Ravensmash"] I'm aware of that... But by law and the existence of the 2nd amendment it is far far easier for a civilian to gain access to firearms than in a country where prohibition is the law.

but would you want a place where only criminals would be acquiring guns?...

Well ideally it would be a place where no one has to acquire guns (for the purpose of self defence at least). But that's why I'm conflicted on gun control laws myself. Point still stands though that firearm related incidents are a lot lower here, presumably linked to lack of legal access (outside a few rifles and shotguns).

I guess the depths of the lame has no end around here.

Agreed. People pretending that they truly, truly care about this event is a bit lame.

In general people do care about the event....they just don't feel the individual deaths as they would someone they knew. But to say they are pretending is ridiculous.

[QUOTE="Ravensmash"][QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] The US has gun regulations. You don't just walk in and grab guns. LJS9502_basic
I'm aware of that... But by law and the existence of the 2nd amendment it is far far easier for a civilian to gain access to firearms than in a country where prohibition is the law.

Legal gun owners are not doing the crime. Most crimes are committed by ILLEGAL weapons. You do see the difference....no?

YES. That's not my point though!

"Those who want to commit heinous crimes will find a way to obtain the weapon. IN ANY COUNTRY."

That's what I initially responded to, and simply said that it's easier to obtain in a country with few regulations than one with strict anti-gun laws. That makes sense to me, no? I wasn't referring to legal or illegal weapons, but merely ease of obtainment.

No I'm right there with you...I just don't think and outright ban helps anyone but criminals....but I think some of the firearms that are allowed to be sold are a little out of hand.....there is no real good answer here...

It would be labeled as a terrorist act if fear was used to induce a political ideology etc. Note: One can be terrorist and be white. Not sure about the Norwegian's motivations but see Timothy McVeigh. Kind of shoots a hole in your conspiracy theory.

Then I'm not sure what the point is TBH. If crimes are committed by illegal firearms...and we agree they are.....what does it matter if legal ownership is allowed? After all these owners aren't doing the crimes.

Because they have no reason to believe it is related to any sort of terrorism at this time - they're not going to label it something when they have no evidence to support it. And the Norway shooter was deemed a terrorist I believe - he definitely fits the definition.

Before i would agree but any act of mass terror which induces chaos is terrorism. that Muslim soldier that killed his fellow workers in Texas was termed terrorism even though he had a record of mental issues..

Personal protection, yes! Of course you'd need a gun to protect yourself since... everybody else has a gun. The only way to make sure someone doesn't shoot you is to shoot them first. If you lived further outside the borders of the US you'd probably be able to see it.

Also, if you're going to resort to insulting me just because you don't agree with me I think this discussion ends here.

[QUOTE="Allthishate"][QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"][QUOTE="Allthishate"] And yet im watching the news and they have not mentioned the word terrorist attack....

Because thus far there is not political ideology he was promoting dude. I'm sensing you don't understand the use of the word terrorist.

no terrorism used to be associated with political views but now days its coined for anything that causes mass chaos or casualties...

No. No it isn't.

How awful is this? Kids were in that theater. Can you imagine how excited they were to be able to see there favorite super hero and then suddenly real life gun fire and killing. Traumatizing. I can't believe it.

What a horrible time to say a thing like this - especially when we know very little and the police are still trying to deal with a booby trapped apartment. And this is an elected official :(

Yes your incomprehensible off topic ramblings with izdope are certainly key to the discussion at hand. Thanks for enlightening us.LJS9502_basic
As I said. It is better than using death to create amusement for yourself.

In the "not-how-to-respond-to-a-crisis" department:

http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2012/07/20/554761/tea-party-congressman-links-colorado-shooting-to-attacks-on-christianity/

Not only did Rep. Gohmert think that this was an attack on "Judeo-Christian" beliefs, but he also though the tradgedy could have been averted if people in the movie audience had guns and shot back.

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"][QUOTE="l4dak47"][QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] In general people do care about the event....they just don't feel the individual deaths as they would someone they knew. But to say they are pretending is ridiculous.

I'm sure they do, but we all know jokes will be made about this later, and it will be okay because "enough time has passed!" Which seems a bit arbitrary and hypocritical to me.

I'm not sure when it's ever right to make jokes about tragedies of this nature TBH. I guess it depends on the mental ability of the individuals.

What do you mean by mental ability?

[QUOTE="kuraimen"] Wrong. Japan banned firearms and it's one of the safest countries on Earth. Of course not all countries are going to be the same but that's not true that countries with banned firearms are more violent.kuraimen

japan.. safe LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

:| Look at the crime statistics. Or better yet, go there and see for yourself.

japan has a huge problem with reporting crime so the statistic is much higher. there are also many areas in japan were crimes go on with no involvement of the police or government.

the yakuza is scary as all hell. they have an EXTREMELY apathetic government that couldn't care less about health regulations. they have a biased legal system which targets immigrants. they dont keep violent criminals locked very long and the entire country is being slowly destabilized by their already unstable government.

i have been to japan, Tokyo and the country side is fine any other big city just doesn't seem to give a fuk whether you get murdered or not.

ps i was mugged there twice in okinowa. both by what i assume were yakuza or some other gang.

pps dont get me started on the roaming biker gangs that go around breaking things and beating people up.
