Video- Obama Affirms Support for Same-sex marriage

For the first time in history, a sitting president professes support for gay marriage. This is a big push for the LGBT community and just the kind of news the progressive left needs to energize his base.

Say what you want about his campaign strategy. Even as a political play, this was a pretty gutsy move on his part.

Meanwhile on Fox News:

Edit:

Mitt Romney affirms opposition to Same-sex marriage in wake of Obama's declaration

"I have the same view on marriage that I had when I was governor. I believe marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman," Romney said. "I have the same view I've had since, well, running for office."

I still think offering support on gay marriage is political suicide in 2012. Maybe not against a joke like Romney. But to give another major reason for Republicans and some independents to hate you is isn't the smartest move. It's a sad fact, but it is true.

Republicans were going to hate anyways. The issue is... Will the move gain more votes for reaffirming some democrats who might not have voted for him or at all and swaying some independents than the lost independents.

I find it incredibly disheartening that an American black man would use religion as a pretense to deny legal rights; knowing how obstructive scripture was to the rights of blacks during the 1900s.

Even if you don't like gays or think marriage is only for a man and woman and sh*t like that, how can you even care enough to be bothered about it?? I don't understand. You don't have to like it but why do you care? You're not involved in the marriage in any way.

he's baiting the GOP (plus supporting gay marriage IMO is the right thing to do regardless, but...), Republicans will respond by saying bigoted things, people will be appalled by the bigoted things said, Republicans will then say they didn't say those bad things, then they'll go anti-gay legislation crazy, from the federal to state governments

He's afraid of losing the black vote. A large chunk of black voters do not believe in gay marriage and rate it high enough on their priorities to make it a factor.

About time he dropped the cynical charade about him "evolving" considering he supported gay marriage back in 1996, but then turned around and said he was against it when he decided to run for President. But I do give him credit for coming out in support of gay marriage in an election year instead of after.

In all honestly I wouldn't be surprised at all. Maybe they're so scared turning out gay that they have to be against anything gay to reinforce their straightness.

I love how everybody gives him credit for that. Not like we worked for 7 years before hand to find him. I'm sure all of those soliders who fought in Tora Borra kind of disagree when people say he killed Osama.

No president "killed" Obama. It was the soldiers and their commanding officers who did the work. They deserve the credit.

I'm happy for the gesture, it's a very small step, but the public acknowledgment of his support of actual same-sex marriage, not just civil unions, is a step in the right direction. Oh, and fox news can go F*ck itself, I stopped listening to it a long time ago.

Eh, I probably overstated it a bit. I mean the people that were already voting for Obama were in support of gay marriage, and those who aren't were already voting for Romney. But I'm sure he'll lose a few votes over the issue.

At least this is just a personal opinion and he's leaving the issue to the states. Still highly questionable for him to reverse his opinion on something as fundamental as marriage due to pressure from the left - shows a lack of conviction. Oh well.

The only logic I've been able to connect is that people want to have America as a "Christian Nation" so they feel more at home and less threatened by other beliefs... Therefore anything that voids their interpretation of their religion becomes a threat to both their nation and religion... Those really can rile people up, even as ignorant and selfish as they are. Can't think of a better way people could honestly believe its wrong.

Wasdie

Bro, did you even read the article? He acknowledges he once thought civil unions were adequate for gays and marriage should stay how it is. But he did a little something called thinking and questioning his own beliefs. He is not flip flopping because the stance at that particular moment is good for his political aspirations; he did a lot of deliberating over the course of 4 years.

I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I?ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get marriedObama
