For the first time in history, a sitting president professes support for gay marriage. This is a big push for the LGBT community and just the kind of news the progressive left needs to energize his base.

Say what you want about his campaign strategy. Even as a political play, this was a pretty gutsy move on his part.

Well, its a strong message.

But its still only a start.

I find it incredibly disheartening that an American black man would use religion as a pretense to deny legal rights; knowing how obstructive scripture was to the rights of blacks during the 1900s.

Gays want to be able to marry because obviously that has a direct impact on their lives. But gays being married has no effect on anyone else, so why should they care?

He's been back and forth on this. In 2008 he was saying how marriage was between a man and a woman.

He's afraid of losing the black vote. A large chunk of black voters do not believe in gay marriage and rate it high enough on their priorities to make it a factor.

I still think offering support on gay marriage is political suicide in 2012. Maybe not against a joke like Romney. But to give another major reason for Republicans and some independents to hate you is isn't the smartest move. It's a sad fact, but it is true.Maniacc1

About time he dropped the cynical charade about him "evolving" considering he supported gay marriage back in 1996, but then turned around and said he was against it when he decided to run for President. But I do give him credit for coming out in support of gay marriage in an election year instead of after.

I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I?ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get marriedObama
