America is in serious need of some health/nutrition reforms due to the fact that number of obese individuals keeps climbing year by year. Everytime I go to a clothing store I find out that the number of large clothing surpasses the amount of small and medium sized clothes by a wide margin. Everytime I see an obese individual on a motorized wheelchair at wallmart I do not see them with their basket full of carrots and lettuce, I see them carrying Little Debbie pastries and/or a bunch of TV Dinners (sad but true). Money should be invested into making the healthier food choices cheaper and more appealing to the public or the numbers will keep climbing and humans will become like the ones from Wall-e. I am glad that my parents limited the amount of junk food I ate and forzed me to go to a daily basketball practice, many do not have the privilege and the consequences are present in childhood today.

Whats your stance in this? Do you feel sympathy for the morbidly obese? What do you feel when you see an obese child? :o

You'll find very good negative correlation between those international obesity statistics and percentage of childhood population which is underweight. I'm not saying that obesity in developed nations isn't a problem, only that, on this kind of scale, obesity coincides with ability to adequately feed a national population.

I know that realistically, there is not going to be any change. The whole push for healthier stuff and being healthy is making things worse instead of better.

I know! People just buy things because there's no fat in it or because it has zero calories or because of other nonsense. Just eat correctly. Some of the cereals I ate as a kid have less sugar in them and I can tell, they don't taste the same. :(

Have any of you guys seen the documentary Fat Head? It's quite a bit more eye opening than a cherry-picked graph and anecdotal evidence.

who cares, the hardest part is finding shirts long enough. Back in my college days i tried to wear the trendy clothes... but all the tiny people meant i had to wear belly shirts.

and im only 6'2". I can lose weight to fit into clothes, i cant lose height.

I really don't give a s*** about other people's bodies. Though...I do give a s*** if their unhealthy bodies lead to a strain on anything in the public (negatively affecting innocents), but ultimately I'm not going to tell people what to put into their own bodies, just like I don't want anyone telling me what to do.

IMO, pointless numbers. I only care fat percentage. So many body builders are over weight. And so many people with large bond structure that weighted tons compares to my tiny bone frame. And those numbers never take those into considerations. magicalclick

most bodybuilders are considered morbidly obese on the BMI actually.

do you actually know how the BMI works? is strictly a weight to height ratio...

and with many pro bodybuilders clocking in at 6'2" and 260lbs... yes they are considered obese...

BMI is an awful way of gaining intel about weight.

Under the system anyone that does any weight lifting at all is classed as morbidly obese, and anyone a fractionover the index is overweight.

Well TC. It seems people want to make excuses, and claim that the study is "fixed" or that BMI (despite never being recommended for personal usage, and never being used by professionals to gauge a bodybuilder's health) is inaccurate. And it seems they're doing so so avoid the actual issue.

Well you said thats now how BMI works, and if i had someone check my bmi ide know that. I can do simple division across my my own height and weight. Its certainly looks like you are implying BMI is somehow similiar to a caliper test... because everyone is capable of checking their own bmi.

clearly you are backtracking now.

That pretty much explained it. USA, if you want to reduce overweight, be averge and don't workout. :|

 Even when the idea of BMI was introduced it was never intended for calculating an individual's weight, only large masses for surveys,(look it up.) PS : If someone was to workout AND do cardio, they wouldn't have a high bmi, and wouldn't be considered overweight anyways.

No its the weight divided by the square of height.

But when i said most bodybuilders are considered obese, you told me thats not how it works... The BMI equation has only two inputs, height and weight.

I think you maybe made a mistake and thats ok, we all do. If you want to pull a palin, and keep trying to justify your point i cant stop you.

Not joking.

The people in WWF use steroids and dont do cardio. They train to get as big as possible, with as little strength. Again: BMI is not intended to determine individual bodyfat (although it can be used to give a quick idea on AVERAGE people) and is not intended to determine the body fat of people who frequently work out to gain body mass.(such as WWF wrestlers)

It's Weight * 703 / Height^2 It seems every time you describe how to obtain one's BMI, you get it wrong. If you dont know how to calculate your BMI, how would you know your BMI? and why would you dispute something you clearly dont understand?

still doesnt explain when i said most pro bodybuilders are considered obese by bmi, you told me.. that isnt how bmi works.

Now you are getting all technical and talking about workout routines, but in your original response... you said pro bodybuilders arent considered obese by BMI standards... because somehow i didnt understand how BMI works.

"it is meant to be used as a simple means of classifying sedentary (physically inactive) individuals with an average body composition" to use it on anyone else would be against the proper usage of BMI, and as such, your point is invalid.

my point was that pro bodybuilders, such as ronnie coleman are considered morbidly obese by the BMI (which they are) you are the one saying i dont know how it works.

So if i dont know how it works, show me how ronnie colemen is considered skinny by BMI standards. Im still waiting for this miraculous computation that makes me wrong...

fact of the matter is, im right, you are wrong.

you are so wrong its not even funny, the BMI was created in the 1830's by Adolphe Quatelet, being a statistician he thought he could create a formula that would give the optimum weight for a person height.

[QUOTE="Nibroc420"] "it is meant to be used as a simple means of classifying sedentary (physically inactive) individuals with an average body composition" to use it on anyone else would be against the proper usage of BMI, and as such, your point is invalid.Nibroc420

my point was that pro bodybuilders, such as ronnie coleman are considered morbidly obese by the BMI (which they are) you are the one saying i dont know how it works.

So if i dont know how it works, show me how ronnie colemen is considered skinny by BMI standards. Im still waiting for this miraculous computation that makes me wrong...

I'm waiting for you to use the BMI scale properly, rather than on someone who isn't "physically inactive with average body composition"

My claim is pro bodybuilders are considered morbidly obese on the BMI scale, you said i dont understand the BMI scale. Ronnie Coleman is considered morbidly obese on the BMI scale.

Now you are throwing quotes into the mix, if pro bodybuilders arent considered obese by BMI... prove it, or go away. I have a healthy understanding, you dont.

you are so wrong its not even funny, the BMI was created in the 1830's by Adolphe Quatelet, being a statistician he thought he could create a formula that would give the optimum weight for a person height.

 Learn it's proper usage,

and you'll understand my issue with what "SoBaus" and the others people who denounce these graphs as proof.

whatever your understanding of the BMI is, calculate ronnie coleman's BMI and tell me the result. If hes not obese based on your calculation... ill admit defeat. But show your work.

BMI isnt ment to be used on people who work-out to get as big as possible. BMI IS used to estimate the BMI of people who are not considered "active", unless calculating the the average body mass of a large group. To use it in any other manner would be counter-productive, and inaccurate, as such, there would be no reason to even calculate Ronnie Coleman's BMI.
