I echo Saje's cry of DOWN WITH AVATAR. Though I'd at least have something to moan about if it did win.

I see Avatar winning best picture. It is one of the worst films on the list too, but if the Oscars is the mad ad machine for the film industry it is, it will stick Avatar at the top. Why? Because it is the final push for 3-D to truly be in the mainstream, and considered a viable method of filmmaking, which in terms helps combat piracy, and also helps bring people into cinemas fueling Hollywood's economic side.

Yet, I'm not so sure Cameron will win Best Director, see the Academy has to put something that deserves to win somewhere on their winners list, and so I see Kathryn Bigelow winning that gong. That's right, I'm suggesting a split.

I've never gotten the draw of the Oscars, to be honest. It's basically Hollywood telling us what Hollywood has done best over the previous year. If I worked in the film industry, I can see being interested to some degree, but as a cultural touchstone, it makes no sense to me.

The more awards Inglorious Basterds and The Hurt Locker get, the happier I am. I just wish they hadn't put them both into so many categories with each other...

Oh, and I'll also become angrier with every award Avatar wins. It can have best animation or whatever, but that's it. :x

^I prefer The Hurt Locker, but I wouldn't really have a complaint if Up in the Air somehow pulls out the miracle win.

The more awards Inglorious Basterds and The Hurt Locker get, the happier I am.

SeraphimGoddess

Exactly how I feel. I'm hoping for a screenplay win for Tarantino, best director for Bigelow, and Best Picture for Hurt Locker.

It's not that it's hate really, but overall frustration with it being up for best picture. I liked the movie, but it doesn't mean it belongs in that category. There was a predictable plot which was normal for this type of movie, the acting wasn't the best, and well, the visuals and CGI were badass, I'll give it that. But that's all it had. Inglorious Bastards however was pure genius. Plot, acting, etc....all fantastic. It deserves best picture way before Avatar is even considered.

so its basicly just that same old pretentious "its a pretty fun popcorn flick, nothing more" mentality...

i though the acting was great, especially zoe saldana, considering that her character was all cgi. I also loved the story, i diddnt care if it was predictable.

it was a great retelling of a classic story with a new look

also while i liked inglorious, i dont think it was best pic worthy

My thoughts exactly. If I had never seen any other movie I would probably think there was nothing wrong with Avatar, but the fact that I kept thinking, "Oh I have seen that in some other movie," is reason enough for me to think that Avatar shouldn't win (and that was a long movie to be thinking that kind of thing the whole time). However Both Inglorious Basterds and Up in the Air had great acting and were not incredibly cliched throughout.

[QUOTE="legend26"][QUOTE="JML897"][QUOTE="legend26"]so its basicly just that same old pretentious "its a pretty fun popcorn flick, nothing more" mentality...

Wait...it's pretentious to say the plot wasn't anything special and to have the opinion that the acting wasn't that good? :?

no, im saying that this is the general opinion twords avatar, and its mostyl coming from the typical "profesional" critics who feel they must hate anything popular and big budget

I can certainly tell you that I'm not a professional critic, and I was entertained by Avatar, but as far as "movies" go, it wasn't that great. Again, my opinion, and I think Inglorious Bastards was way better than Avatar. Again, I LIKED Avatar, but I don't think it was good enough for best picture.

Anyone else think this opening monologue is awkward as hell? Some of it is really funny (I liked the reference to The Jerk), but there seem to be more misses than hits.

Not for me. I'm going to kill it playing video games. I'll just learn the results later.

It`s all so freakin`awkward right now. I`m so disappointed in both hosts. Hugh Jackman last year was the best. No moments of awkwardness.
