I think it is alright if he is black, but for other movies reactions are different. With the Last Airbender, the developers were racist, because the characters weren't the ethnicity they were supposed to be. Now with a Norse god portrayed by a black man; those opposing the idea are racist. mayforcebeyou

This thread is racist! :x

Yeah I know... from the BP sig I know you're a Marvel, I'm a DC(well not really I'm just an Aqua-fan). Brightest Day is cool but you'd have to read Blackest Night first... Only marvel book I read was Doctor Voodoo(for obvious reason), but I was thinking of reading Namor since DC has Aquaman stuck in Brightest Day til next year...

I am more marvel/indepent books but I am building a pretty good collection of DC books. Batman, Superman, constantine, etc, I just do not get into their crossovers. I don't even know which green lanturn book to pick up first. Personaly I don't think the new namour series is worth it, but that is me.

Do you have a source for this? The general population was by no means of Roman descent.

No it was Greek and ruled by the Romans

Again, this is not true. Though it was technically part of the Hellenic world, the population was not "Greek" in the ethnic sense. We are of course referring to the Galileans, of which Jesus was descended. They had mostly modern day middle-eastern racial features.

Prior to Roman domination it was the Greeks, before them it was the Pheonicans (who colonised southern spain and north africa too). Ethnically the area would have looked nothing like it was today. The Isrealites were a seperate group from the populations and as I said would have carried middle eastern features. However, within a centuries of Jesus's death they had spread all over Europe, and were more or less indistinguishable from native populations. They weren't "Arabic" as the natives of the area today are.

If it was a serious movie based on mythology, it would be stupid, but not something to protest over, just don't watch it if you don't like it. However, it is not serious, it's based on comics, so they should probably stfu before they make themselves look more stupid.

Because that is what historians and anthropologists believe the Gallileans would have looked like.

Do you have a link? My guess is he would have looked liked like an extremely tanned man with dark, probably black hair, not the milky white blond/light brown haired Jesus people depict in art through the centuries. To bring it back on topic, to say that a white person can't play him, or that its somehow comparable to a black actor playing a Norse God, now thats a leap.

To me this reeks of the typical cry out of "the white man is losing everything!".. This conservative group is most assuredly Christian, and they could care less about Norse Mythology, let alone Marvel Comic's interpretation of it.. Especially when this guy is playing a side character and not the main character.

To me its like Token in South Park. The group reeks more of out and out racism. As someone interested in history I find it a little annoying, but as I'm sure the film is going to be about as accurate as a Raiders quarterback, I don't really see why anyone should get that upset by it.

who cares, the dude is playing a fictional character from a comic book, i wonder if this group got butthurt when aang was casted as a white kid "i'm sorry but aang is of asian ethnicity or that sokka and his sister where also casted as white kids "they were freaking Mongolian" or when Goku was played by a white actor "now, some people say Goku is an alien so we don't know what race he is in dbz, okay, but why is everyone else in the movie asian? Chi- Chi, Goku's grandfather, Yamcha, Mai, master roshi, come on that doesn't make any sense. if the guy is a good actor then i don't see the prob, its based off a freaking comic for goodness sake, get over it.

... What does history have anything to do with a comic book's interpretation of a mythology? I am pretty sure history flew out the window when they had Thor flying around in present day fighting bad guys.

For this group yeah, but in general fans get riled up for these things. I mean I know I did at first glance but then I just didn't bother with it since it's honestly a side character.

I'm somewhat agree with them, it doesn't have any sense to cast a Nordic God as a black people, if any, the racist are the the ones making this film since they know a black person will rise controversy and make some free propaganda for the movie.

Heimdell is not iconic. So who cares if he's black, in fact he's doing the character a favour because more people will know more about him due to the controversy. If Thor was black, I'd have a problem. This is a non issue. Idas is a good actor too.

seriously, can we stop pretending those are nordic gods?

They are alians, not gods

-

the source material might show him as a white male, but then again no one complained when goku in dbz evolution was a white man, despite everyone else being asian.

the reason why this comparason is even more fitting is because the Thor movie is going to suck as much.

I'm not against the fact that a black people portray or not a certain role, i'm against the fact that this guys seems to be doing this not because they think the actor fits the role, like Morgan Freeman who perfectly fit in the role or even Michael Clark Duncan in Daredevil since i don't think there is anyone else who could fit better, but because they seem to be searching some controversy so this movie receive some attention, and that for me, is pretty damn racist.

Flawed analogy. Nick Fury was black in at least ONE instance of comics, before the movie itself. Furthermore, the artist of Ultimates based him on Samuel L Jackson. Heimdall was NEVER black.

Speaking of black actors starring as characters that are supposed to be white...

Did anyone have hissy fits when Morgan Freeman starred as the bad guy military dude in the Dreamcatcher movie? In the book the character was white.

I dont mind a black Heimdall. I was never much into the Thor comics anyway so it doesnt matter.

You know....I replied a couple of times on how this is kinda "off". Having a black Norse God or whatever. But I've thought about it.......a little anyway, and I retract my previous statements. In all honesty, this is a comic book when it boils down to it. So it's not like this is all non fiction. If the black guy was the best for the part then I don't see anything wrong with it.

But was he? I don't really like the casting choice for Hogun either, but at least it can be argued that Hogun looks Asian (although he actually looks like Charles Bronson).

[QUOTE="Avistann"] It would have been but I also gave the Howard the Duck one shot a chance. It was written by the same writer as Namor and it was worse than Namor tenfold.th3warr1or

I don't see how some people even get opportunities to write.

Jeph Loeb for example.

Hey I know thor was in Red Hulk and they fought, do you know if they tied or did Hulk win.

Normally I would agree with you but his Ultimate X is(was?) brilliant. However, only three issues have been released and there has been no sign of issue 4 in months.

I don't really like Bendis either to be honest.

Thor lost the first time, but it was so stupid.

Thankfully, he has put that affront behind him by completely owning Rulk. :P

He is off and on for me. I dropped New Avengers and I am on the fence with Avengers. I feel like every arc I read of his, he gives very little explanation of events. Things just happen. However, I am enjoying Scarlet at the moment. My top writers: Jeff Parker, Mark Waid, Nick Spencer, Scott Snyder, Geoff Johns, Jason Aaron, and Fraction(On Iron Man)

I really don't like Rulk, they are pushing the green machine hulk aside for this dork.
