"Jewish" people are not Caucasian because Judaism is a religion. Jews can be black, white, Hispanic, etc.

The ancient Galileans resembled modern day Arabs, so the Cesare Borgia depiction of Jesus is a blatant falsification.

My point is that it doesn't matter what race the actor is, since it is a mere superficiality that has no bearing on the essence of the character.

Not a big deal,

Mike myers plays "the Guru"

Sir Ben Kingsley plays Ghandi and I dont think anyone made a fuss, and the fact that ghandi is an actual real historical figure as opposed to a fictional comic book character veeeerrrrrrry loosely based on myth.

Arabs are Caucasian. Jesus is mostly shown with dark hair and not as white as say a Scandinavian. I fail to see why you brought Him up in this actually. Jewish ethnicity is a Semitic ethnicity. Same as other Middle Eastern countries. Skin tone does vary within race. Southern Italians have darker skin tone than even the Northern Italians...let alone other Caucasian groups.

Well boycotting is done by individuals every day if they don't spend the money on the product for whatever reason. And we have no way of determining if some individuals chose not to see that movie or others for that reason. In effect...an individual boycott.

Well I can't account for what a few individuals do with their private life, but simply not attending showings of the film is a bit different than what the article described as 'urging others' to boycott the movie. Any excuse for bigotry, though.

I don't see the jump to bigotry because they want the adaptation to be faithful to mythology. Then again I don't look for racism everywhere so I don't know...

[QUOTE="-Sun_Tzu-"]Idris Elba probably had the best audition for the role - why should he lose out to a less qualified actor because of his race? That in my mind would be a much greater injustice than a white comic book character being played by a black actor. FragStains
While not a perfect parallel, is this not an argument against affirmative action?

To some extent it is, although affirmative action is a more complex issue.

But shouldn't the best qualified get the job no matter the race?

Yes, the most qualified should get the job. I've never said otherwise.

Seems like a frivolous difference to lose your **** over as there isn't a single film adaptation in existence that remains completely true to the source material. If the actor is good enough, and the character is portrayed accurately, then his skin colour should be irrelevant.

But I guess what I look for in a film is different that of the protestors.

Well I don't particularly care who plays roles in the film....I'm just saying fanboys can get a bit extreme.

Even if that's true, by having a black dude play a Norse god means they're not even trying. There's a difference between NOT knowing what was historically accurate and, hey, screw historical accuracy. If they can make the black dude look white in the film, I have no problem with it.

So how will they make Idris Eldris look white? Jake Gyllenhaal and Sir Ben Kingsly at least looked akin to nationalities of the characters they were depicting, right? :D

Yes, the most qualified should get the job. I've never said otherwise.

In that case, it depends on what the director/producer wants, actors also have to have their physical appearance taken into account for a role, it can't just be how well they act, thats dumb, but when a book/ any other for of literature that gets a movie adaptation it's upt to the people making the movie how they do it, like the Earthsea movie/miniseries, the people are supossed to be redskinned/ more native american in their skin tone, instead they were white and one was black.

Although I hate that they are saying Captain America is the "First Avenger" we'll have to get over it. Unless mobs of people attack, well, then we have a problem.

Xaos has explained it a hundred times, the Marvel Norse Gods are not the same gods as the "historical" Norse Gods of mythology.

"Caucasian" was originally meant to refer to people from the Caucasus region. The term has been misappropriated to represent a much larger range of people in modern times. It's basically a misnomer.
