Huh? Double huh? It's not that it's not politically correct, it's that it's not very healthy. This has nothing to do with liberals so stop trying to spin it that way. Remember when Reagan tried to get ketchup classified as a vegetable so that school budgets remained cheap?Engrish_Major

If it comes from a liberal policy, it's from liberals. Stop thinking that I'm bashing liberals for no apparent reason. It is liberals that are propagating the thought that it's not healthy, when in reality if kids got the exercise they needed every day, we wouldn't have this problem.

Plus, I doubt very much that school lunches have more of an effect on a person than their eating habits at home.

[QUOTE="Engrish_Major"]I don't know what this has to do with political correctness, or what it has to do with liberals at all. But here are the articles: airshocker

The only reason they have to label pizza as a vegetable is because of the standards the Obama administration and Dept of Agriculture set for school lunches being healthier. They only sought to make these changes because it's not politically correct for kids to eat french fries and pizza.

I think you are mistaking PCness and being healthy, but whatever.

They wouldn't have to do any of this if it wasn't because of a liberal president's agenda. :)

no matter what presidential administration is in power, congress is going to have to deal with their agenda. It is of course their choice if they want to handle it in a profoundly idiotic way, which seems to be this congress's course of action far more often than not.

This. The main component of a pizza is the dough - without it, you don't have a pizza, so it isn't a vegetable just because of some smeared-on sauce.

I eat french fries every damn day for lunch. I also workout four or five times a week. I'm 5'11 and my weight is usually around 170. I also watch my caloric intake.

A lack of physical activity in schools is the real culprit, not the food.

Unincorporated towns usually have an executive that makes the decisions. Once they get incorporated into a larger town(usually a conglomeration of villages, hamlets, etc) that town supervisor or executive takes over. For instance, I live in the village of Suffern in the Town of Ramapo. We have a town supervisor that makes all of our budget decisions.

You will not die by eating french fries and pizza every day, silly. If children actually did things in Phys. Ed. and weren't allowed to just sit on the bleachers, we'd have a much healthier student body.

No it doesn't. It's all about caloric intake. So long as the excess intake is offset by physical activity that burns calories, it is healthy.

I was in the Air Force, I know a little thing about fitness since I had to pass fitness tests every six months.

but fastfood has nothing to do with school lunches and changes in the school system over the years. also kids dont even make up enough of the population to begin to toy to project national number on them. about 1/7th of the population is under 15, and that is who we are talking about. people that dont have their own purchasing power and who spend 8 hours a day in school

It's not so difficult to imagine why the amount of time spent eating is related to things like fast food specially in the US which is the fast food nation. That's why it's called fast food.

unless you are a performance athlete or have dietary problems, what you eat is not all that important as long as you eat a range of foods. seriously, you, me, and 99.999 of everyone else on this planet has no reason to have a calculated and planned diet. FYI that is 1 out of ever 100,000 people in my estimate. humanity did not evolve to require exacting levels of micro and macro nutrients.

No, a balanced diet is optimal, but having pizza or french fries for lunch every day will do absolutely nothing to your body so long as your caloric intake remains where your body requires it to be.

The chart you provided says nothing about physical activity. Just one of many other possible/plausable explanations. Actually, your chart does about as much to support the possible explanation I provided as it does yours. (In other words, nothing).

[QUOTE="Engrish_Major"]So you do not believe that getting the required nutrients and vitamins from, say, actual vegetables is important to children?airshocker

No, a balanced diet is optimal, but having pizza or french fries for lunch every day will do absolutely nothing to your body so long as your caloric intake remains where your body requires it to be.

And eating healthy is key to keeping your caloric intake where it needs to be. High glycemic foods such as pizza ingredients and fries are metabolized very quickly in your body, in contrast to lower glycemic foods such as meat and actual vegetables. When you eat high glycemic foods, you are just hungry again in an hour or two. And most people will just eat again when they are hungry. High glycemic foods cause people to eat more calories.

What people do when they get hungry again has nothing to do with this. We're talking about the food themselves not being unhealthy.

[QUOTE="kuraimen"][QUOTE="Planet_Pluto"]So, you are trying to make a point about fast food, so you produce a chart (that hopefully was based on scientific study) that has nothing to do with fast food. And to make the leap you use your imagination?

Planet_Pluto

It is not farfetched to imagine. Do you have another explanation? Correlation doesn't imply causation though. That was also my point by answering to the graph posted above with another graph.

The chart you provided says nothing about physical activity. Just one of many other possible/plausable explanations. Actually, your chart does about as much to support the possible explanation I provided as it does yours. (In other words, nothing).

The chart about physical activity says nothing about fast food either :|

Here a scientific study for you
http://www.emeraldinsight.com/journals.htm?articleid=1812142&show=html

It is found that GPA is negatively correlated with BMI and fast food intake, and BMI and fast food intake are positively correlated in the American sample.

And here is the amount of McDonalds in the US. Relaly it is not so farfetched to see why America is the most overweight nation in the world. Of course physical activity has to do with it but thinking that fast food is not is pretty naive.
