Should these teens get 5 years in prison?

If I could have 5 minutes in a room, with my bare hands, then they'd understand the pain that cat went through. This piece of news made me feel sick. I can't believe you could do that, let alone taunt the owners about it. Those two boys are scum. Hopefully their fellow inmates will have higher standards & shank them.

Funny thing is, I think if it was a human and not a cat, people wouldn't care so much. That's just how things are for some reason. Even me included. I just shrug when I hear of humans dying most of the time, but when I hear of an animal I get pissed. Zaeryn

I think 5 years is reasonable. At the risk of sounding like a heatless *******, you do have to consider 2 things:

1) It is, at the end of the day, an animal. Does that make it right? Absolutely not, but the last thing we need is someone getting a longer sentence for killing a cute, cuddly animal than killing a person.

2) They're still kids. Their crime was one of stupidity, they'll learn their lesson in far less than 5 years.

A kitten = baby cat. An infant = baby human. An infant wiould never hurt a human purposly in the first place. Plus, an infant won't go willinging inside a micronwave. An infant doesn't know that the adult is about to kill them. An infant is not able to defend itself. Sure it can scream, kick, "punch" and cry, but what will that do anythig if a person 6x your size is grabbing you?

Hm.... it is possible but I still think a £10,000 fine isn't worthy of the crime, a jail sentance I think is the only way. Hopefully they will be changed for the better if they do go to jail...

Same. My girlfriends tried to make me go vegitarian and I lasted about a week. My diet is based too much around meat for me to go. I also just don't think theres much of a point in it. Just because I or even my group of friends, hell my entire year went vegitarian my local super market wouldn't change it's order of meat.

The same amount would die, and I don't care what vegitarians say about statistics about it being healthily what they don't include is that most vegitarians don't smoke, drink and exercise regulaly. Unlike alot of meat eaters.

Maybe you do. Personally, I haven't, nor will I ever, do any of those things. And I will certainly not find myself torturing another living thing for pleasure. Human beings who get a thrill from breaking into peoples' homes and torturing animals will not contribute to society unless they resolve those issues. In fact, humans who get a thrill from breaking into peoples' homes and torturing animals as youths generally end up in prison later in life, having commited a violent crime or crimes against people. You reap what you sow. Breaking into the house and the vandalism alone was enough to warrant prison time. Torturing the cat - that completely seals the deal. These kids are disturbed, and society must be protected from them, which is exactly what jail and psychological assistance is for.

You need both if these boys are ever going to be the functional members of society you think they will be. You need them to face the consequences of their decisions, and you need to get them psychological assistance. If they respond well to this assistance and are deemed to no longer be a threat to society, they will probably be paroled. If not, they must stay behind bars.

They didn't make a mistake. If they thought it was a mistake, they would have taken the cat out long before it died. It was screaming in agony for 10 minutes. 10 MINUTES is long enough to realize that something is suffering and that what you are doing is ***** up. If you DON'T realize that within 10 minutes, it is NOT a mistake - it is intentional and malicious. And that is confirmed by the messages they left for the owners after doing the deed.

This isn't about putting cats ahead of people. It's about recognizing that any person who is capable of doing what these boys did to the cat is a danger to society, and that danger must be eliminated within reason.

No, it's judged by intent. Let's say the kids were homeless and starving and they killed and ate this cat. My opinion would be different, as I'm sure would be the opinion of the law enforcement personnel. Some people would still be upset, because it's a social taboo to eat a cat, or to kill someone's pet - but the motivation in this case would be entirely different, and people's reactions would be different, too. I can guarantee it. I doubt anyone here would be calling for the death penalty (which is obviously overboard even in the real case). In fact, this discussion probably would have turned into a debate about WHY the kids ended up homeless and hungry, not about what they did.

Think, DrSponge. This has nothing to do with cuteness. This has to do with malicious torture that was intended to serve no purpose but amusement. And as sickening as some food industry treatment of animals can be, I do not think many of the workers derive satisfaction from killing, nor did they sign up for the job simply so they could make the animals suffer and revel in it.
