Students Trade Bibles for Porn

"We consider the bible to be a very negative force in the history of the world," student Ryan Walker said. Walker is part of a student group that calls itself the Atheist Agenda.

Club members this week posted fliers promoting what they call the "Smut for Smut" campaign, then set up a table in the student union to collect religious materials and pass out adult magazines such as Black Label and Playboy.

The group is not officially sanctioned by the university and has raised the ire of several religious organizations on campus.

"In my opinion, there are no atheists. There are fools," Pastor Rick Hawkins of UTSA's Family Praise Center said. "So, that would be foolish propaganda. I don't know one believer that would take his Bible and turn it in for pornography."

Hawkins obviously didn't stop by the Atheist Agenda table, where several students had dropped off copies of the good book and walked away with skin mags.

Atheist Agenda isn't the first student group to explore the idea of introducing porn to former bible-toters. Members say they got the idea from students in Austin who ran a similar pro-porn drive.

Walker added that members thought it sounded like a creative way to exercise their freedom of speech.

I already stated that it actually doesn't irritate Christians....perhaps a small minority...but overall...Nope.

Second...I'll wager the majority of people turning in bibles are picking one up to get the porn...not doing it for the reasons stated...therefore, it is about the porn and not the statement.:roll:

I could set up a table and give porn away for a dictionary....and I know I'd get dictionaries dude.

Plus, it has to be costly to give away the porn. So in the end, they lose. Though they have increased bible sales.;)

I doubt that the porn mags were new. They were probably all donated. And I doubt that most of the bibles were new. Almost everyone has an old bible lying around somewhere...even I do...and I come from an atheist household. Also, as previously stated, many people would get a free bible from a church before buying one from a bookstore.

And of course it's about the statement, as you've said, it isn't hard to get porn, it's about trading in something highly regarded for something generally frowned upon (at least in public) and making them of equal value.

If you took one with you...to college...it would mean something to you....and therefore, you wouldn't turn it in but would get your porn another way.

For me, it's about the statement.

I'm taking the Bible with me this fall when I leave for college. That way, I can whip it out whenever I want and quote leviticus (if I'm accosted by a religious converter). I don't even need to argue my points, it looks absurd without even arguing - the text from leviticus, that is.

Other than a few door to door Jehovah Witnessess....who don't come to my house...they don't know the easy way to get there...and a few Mormons on the street...that won't persist if you say no....I don't know of any religious converters. I think that is a huge exaggeration. I don't know that you'd need to defend yourself from them...nor do I know what in Leviticus you cherish. Most religious people just want to live their own life and be left alone....like anyone else.

It may be a statement to you....but I don't think I'm wrong in guessing it's about the porn for the majority of the people. That may be important to the creators of said idea...but not to most of the customers...as it were.
