Students Trade Bibles for Porn

LJS, you must not live in California, home of the fervent when it comes to religion. You live somewhere east coast right? I remember you had a Pittsburgh avatar once. Here in California, at the universities specifically, there is the absolute pinnacle amount of religious and political advocacy in the nation. I've visited UCLA several times, considering I'm going there in the fall, and almost every single time I have visited that campus I have run into somebody speaking - or holding some ginormous poster - advocating jesus christ and condemning nonbelievers.

And I've actually been to a texas university as well, SMU for a college course I took in high school a couple years ago. When my peers found out I was atheist, some of them were offended - just by that.

The act of trading a bible for porn, in the right area, can make a profound statement.

I don't think I am alone.

Aren't they losing out on money then? I mean presumably they aren't going to sell the bibles on cause wouldn't that defeat the pointing in swapping them anyway...yet they have to pay for these magazines...I don't see how they will make thier money back...Mercury88

Yes, it is very easy to see the point of what they are doing. Frankly I don't think it is really something I agree/disagree with, but it is interesting to see how people express their free speech.

Yes...but I still contend the majority of people that take the offer up do so to get porn....and not to make a statement...so you can't separate the two.

See, I'm a very nonreligious person, and I normally don't care for either side (atheist or religious) but to be doing that, trading porn for bibles, is a bit too much. That's crossing the line in terms of offending someone.Shiggums

I agree somewhat. I think they could have made their point without offending anyone. But honestly...this is America...and we have free speech. And the result of free speech is someone somewhere will always get offended. Small price to pay for a great liberty IMO.

Yes...and your point? They made an idea and expressed it, and people respond. Different people will respond in different ways, some will like it, some will agree, some will disagree, some will get angry, some will see it as silly, ect, ect. That doesn't change or diminish what the statement is. It still stands.
