Just finished watching Revenge of The Sith, thoroughly enjoyed it as always.

Anyway, there's a common question of extreme difficulty that is asked frequently in our little "community" of "nerds". And that question is of course "What's the better series? Is it The Lord of The Rings" or is it "Star Wars".

Now, as much as I love Star Wars (And fvck do I love Star Wars). The Lord of The Rings is just too good.
I mean, the setting, the art direction, the soundtrack, the story, the acting, the action. It's all done so well. And I love it so much. My favorite film series of all time.
Star Wars, while it does all these extremely well, too. Just falls short of being my favorite.

Are you talking about the franchise or the movies?

I love the star wars franchise, but those movies were terrible. Only good one was Empire Strikes Back.LOTR is one of the best fantasy films ever made thought I hear The Hobbit is the best in the franchise.

I'm not going to get into how bad the Star Wars films were, Mr. Plinkett's famous review pretty much explains everyone's issue with them. (ironically his critque is more entertaining than the second trilogy itself. You almost want to watch the movies just so you can see him take it apart. )

Lord of the Rings maintains its quality throughout the trilogy.

As much as I love Star Wars, I have to point to Jar-Jar, the absolute lack of romantic chemistry between Amidala and Anakin, carnivorous teddy bears kicking the s*** out of a highly-trained military force with rocks and spears, and Lucas' general need to "fix" the movies by f***ing them up and say it falls WAY short.

I prefer Lord Of The Rings over Star Wars.

It wasn't a hard choice to make, at least for me.

Other than Star Wars and Empire, Star Wars is crap. And Lord of the Rings missed a ton of stuff in the books (Glorfindel much?). Harry Potter is consistent and has extremely likeable characters. Though, this is all just an opinion thread.

LOTR any day...my favorite franchise plus I hate star wars. but even if I wouldnt hate star wars, even if I kept a neutral point of view for both franchises, I would choose LOTR. sorry fanboys but star wars films are just ridiculously low quality...terrible writing and directing, its filled with illogical scenes...like that one from "a new hope" where han solo literally charges at a whole squad of stormtroopers, all of them armed to the teeth, in a narrow corridor, and he is like 5 cm away from them, he just shouts, like a battle cry, and all the stormstroopers get scared ****less and throw their weapons and run away. I mean seriously...I understand its an old movie but that didnt looked dumb back then?

Being influenced by mythology != being literature? Now THAT is an unfounded suggestion. And Harry Potter being a film doesn't get rid of the deus ex machina, flat characters, poorly-constructed world, and terrible ending. Sorry, but a movie based on literature is generally better than a movie based on children's books in story-telling value.

Star Wars. Two amazing movies, 4 movies ranging from abysmal to subpar.. (Return of the Jedi has an awesome opening with Jabba, but the rest of the movie is freaking garbage)

Lord of the Rings, 3 amazing movies, possibly 5 with the 2 hobbit movies coming, which look amazing.

You know that Star Wars isn't a gritty docudrama about a war fought a long time ago, in a galaxy far away, right?

It's fantasy/adventure with a healthy dose of charm added for good measure. Criticising a scene like that for its "dumbness" just demonstrates fully that you don't understand the appeal, and that's fine. Those movies are pure escapism and it's little moments like that from iconic characters like Han that separate Star Wars from others in its genre. Plus, if that scene didn't exist, we wouldn't have had the great homage in Temple of Doom where Indy chases off the slavers with a similar battle cry, pauses a moment, then is chased back across the bridge by the rest of the Thuggee cult at his heels. The sequence also makes a fantastic reference back to Indy's famous "can't I just shoot him?" moment from Raiders, but here he smugly reaches for his revolver to gun down the Thuggee swordsmen and instead finds it missing.

Just sayin', though. You can criticise SW on a ton of other things movie/plot-wise, but bringing realism into a universe where something like THE FORCE exists is asinine. If you can't find anything for characters like Han or Indy to endear themselves to you, never watch Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, or Buster Keaton.

I'd have to say that LotR is the more consistently superior work. Star Wars was ruined by 1-3 and 6 wasn't exactly amazing, while LotR is just a consistent level of... basically great.

If SW hadn't been ruined, it did feel more 'down to earth' (that sounds silly), and I did enjoy it more, it could have been the better 'thing'. Also, I hate fantasy settings... SW really botched it to get lower than a standard fantasy setting, and LotR was really exceptional in that same, usually mediocre, setting.

so you are comparing the force to making a bunch of "the galaxy's best soldiers" get scared by a single guy with a blaster (and each one of those soldiers was carrying more than a blaster PLUS the armor) its a dumb scene, no matter where you see it, its dumb, it feels cheap, just as every piece of dialogue in star wars, I dont care if something similar happened in IJ, its still dumb

Ah this is a hard one. Star Wars a New Hope was the first movie I saw, and I love Episodes 4-6 as well as a lot of the Star Wars games (although lately they have sucked, other than SWTOR). The EU books are pretty interesting too. BUT, Episodes 1 and 2 were atrocious, although imo 3 was pretty good. The whole clone wars cartoons and etc are terrible and are, imo, butchering the franchise. On the other hand LOTR movies are amazing (granted they were all filmed at the same time, essentially), and the books are great too. The games have been terrible though (other than BFME). Overall, I'd say Star Wars though, but thats prolly due to the nostalgia.

Luckily I love them both and don't feel the need to rip into either like some; but LoTR edges it for me. It's a bit of an unfair comparison though; Tolkien had already written all of it whereas Lucas had to create his.

@the guy saying Harry Potter isn't legit Literature; you're an idiot. The Hobbit is in every aspect a children's book (I know, shock horror), as well as Harry Potter and they're both fantastic books which have not only got nations reading again, but really provoke the imagination.

No? All movies require some level of suspension of disbelief, and they make it pretty obvious stormtroopers are no more than faceless, goose-stepping goons. If that's something you absolutely couldn't get over, as minor as it is, I am extremely curious as to what you'd prefer towards the issue of hero-beats-henchmen plural.

Lord of the Rings has it too. If you single SW out for stuff like that, that is some serious selective memory you have.

I know right; I mean the fact that they have these swords that can cut through anything except other swords/vibroblades e.t.c. I mean what the hell, that's totally unrealistic. AND they can talk in space!!! Dear god!!

The books, Lord of the Rings were ok. They were early fantasy and the characters are extremely annoying. Everything is cut and paste good and evil. Everything thats important has to be royalty of some sort.

Star wars the movies were good, that is the originals. I don't even consider the prequels as movies they were so bad. I feel sorry for the generation that had to grow up with those compared the ones I had which were so much better.

I would choose LOTR but then I remembered I like Star War's story, heroes, villains and music better..
