When people say all drugs should be legal, do they realize how wrong that is?

I can see why, from a certain point of view, how that would be a good thing but dear god the negatives outway the pros. Sure, that would cripple the power the drug lords have over the US and hey, a super responsible well built person could enjoy some heroin every now and then and walk away problem free but for every responsible joe schmoe, you have many irresponsible sallys. People are weak, people cave in, people do things they normally wouldnt during dark times. These people, who there are many of, would be given an opportunity to simply walk to a pharmacy and pick up some meth and then ruin their lives. They would get addicted and become a wreck. Families, would break, stores would get robbed, and many would simply OD. Too many innocent lives would get lost and ruined over something like this. Do you agree? Do you disagree?

Well, opium nearly destroyed China.  So I think some limits on drugs are legit.

If more drugs were legal, we'd need strict laws to ensure that idiots couldn't buy them. But that would rule out the entire market. So I don't see the point.

Nope. Prohibition doesn't keep anyone from using. Maybe a few curious folks might be a little more inclined to try something if it's legal, but such people aren't prone to using regularly anyway, so addiction's not really an issue there. People who really desire a drug are going to use that drug regardless of it's legal status.

I'd rather see alcohol banned completely than continue this charade of some drugs (prescription pills & alcohol) are socially accepted but other drugs aren't.

I don't see how wide scale use of drugs under a legal banner would be significantly worse than wide scale use of drugs under an illegal banner.

People get it anyway and then go to jail for it, so we have to ask ourselves, why are we sending people to jail for using certain chemicals on themselves? If legal there'd have to be restrictions (like an age 21 requirement or something) but the war on drugs is a waste of time and money.

There are numerous legal opiates that are heavily abused by Americans. Heroin is only illegal because Big Pharma can't sell it because the federal government says it's illegal. The prevalence of prescription drug abuse is making "illegal" drugs a joke.

Are you familiar with things like Oxycontin, Vicodin and Percocet? They are as "hard" as heroin and perfectly legal to obtain via prescription. Or, if you have a couple bucks, from any number of black markets on the street.

Youre ignoring that these PERSCRIPTION drugs are only given to people with conditions causing severe pain and that recently the FDA has limited the amount of acetaminophen put in perscription drugs to help avoid stuff like this. These painkillers serve a greater purpose. Heroin, crack, and meth dont. You cant just compare them.

I think the use of all drugs should be legal as there's no point in punishing people who are effectively victims. The sale and creation of various "hard" drugs should still be illegal though.

There are none. Every single drug is different on effect, withdrawal potential, hangovers, Toxicity, duration, psychological effects.. ect.

Heroin is an extremely powerful pain killer that was used before morphine showed up. Both of which are excessively physically addictive, like any other opiate. Heroin comes from the same source as all the legal opiates. Crack, or cocaine, is an extremely powerful stimulant that was used by pilots during the World War's to increase their focus and attention on the task at hand, also helping stave off fatigue. Caffeine is a legal equivalent and can produce the same effects (in a high enough dosage) and can just as easily produce a physical dependency (trust me, I have one). Methamphetamine's like Desoxyn have applications for treating ADHD and exogenous obesity. Did I also mention this is a legal drug available through prescription? -- And really, what does them being prescribed change about them? They are all "hard" drugs that cause severe side effects on the body and mind. And in the US, psychadelics like mescaline, LSD, MDMA and other drugs like marijuana, are considered "more dangerous" than meth, cocaine and heroin. Obviously, their being illegal has dick fvcking all to do with their dangerousness, and more to do with Big Pharma being unable to profit from them. Prescription drug abuse is a HUGE problem in North America right now, and is only getting worse the more governments endorse legal prescription drugs like opiates and keep simpler, less harmful drugs like marijuana, MDMA, LSD and psilocybin, which all have substantial medicinal benefits without much side effects, illegal.

I don't think sending addicts to prison will help them either.

Imagine if obesity was illegal, do you think prison would help them?

Obesity is a disease

Drug abuse is a disease

It's definitely not realistic for heroin or meth to ever be legal. However, that's not to say I think people who use it should be put in prison.

Politicians already decided. We should be using science to differentiate the objectively good from the objectively bad. Positive benefits should be weighed against the negative and the consumer be informed of both before they purchase and use.
