Wrong. Stop letting the mass media fool you.
when have you ever heard of a black guy getting his behind whooped for saying that word? never!OneWingedAngeI
Wrong. Absolutely wrong.
it is "generally" accepted.OneWingedAngeI
lol. It certainly is not.
when has a black radio host lost his job over it?OneWingedAngeI
lol. are you just making this stuff up as you go along? riddle me this: when has a black radio host said such a thing on live radio? Links? Don't worry, I'll wait.
when has a black sued another because of the word's use? never. never ever ever.OneWingedAngeI
lol. do you have proof of that claim or any others? making more stuff up?
and just for the record, i think it's fine for people to say whatever the hell they want to. a word is a word and it only has as much power as observers lend it. at least in the US, the country is built on the supposed right to say whatever you want as long as it is not a threat (and i say supposed because every day that right is trampled on). i am merely pointing out the hypocrisy of the VOCAL outspoken majority of the community who are so self righteous yet so wrong.OneWingedAngeI
Words have the power to kill, mame, hurt, control and destroy...they always have. You not recognizing that power doesn't mean it suddenly doesn't exist. You can tell yourself "the sky isn't blue...I have a choice to recognize it and I refuse to." But that sky sure as hell will still be blue. Such is the power of the tongue.
Secondly, your freedoms aren't there to oppress or encroach on someone else's freedoms. you being allow to verbally assault (yea, it's legally called assault) other people at will is neither the intent nor the purpose of freedom of speech laws. unless you'd like to forgo your right to not have your butt kicked.
Stop making stuff up to create convoluted points. And no, the "my gut tells me/my limited life experience with my 2 black friends and BET tell me..." lines won't work. People like me will call you out on them and embarrass you. I have no compassion for people who speak as though they reside in a seat of authority, yet don't know what the hell they're talking about.
the outspoken black community, the ones who complain to trash like al sharpton and who sue people over mere WORDS. dont get me wrong i know that the outspoken do not speak for the whole, but i have yet to see anyone calling these extremists out on what they do so i cannot assume they have much issue with it.OneWingedAngeI
I'm still sort of confused. What percentage of black people actually try to sue people over words?
When you say "outspoken", do you mean writers, etc who are able to get their opinions heard by many people? Or are you referring to "normal" people who get mad and send opinion letters to the local newspapers?
Sorry, I'm still not quite sure what we're talking about here.

you need about 2 more years worth of african american studies before you can discuss the topic with me. You need to delve into fun topics like:
The socio-econimic impact of post-slavery south on blacks and whites
The socio-psycho impact of slavery (spend some time on the methods and techniques employed and enacted upon the slaves)
The generational abuse cycle patters of post-slavery men and women (as in, two different studies...one for each gender)
The effect of Jim Crow on the American South
The effect of Jim Crow on the nation as a whole 1930-present
The effects of Plessy vs. Fergeson (court case)
The effects of Dredd Scoot (court case)
The psychological affects of the Menstrual Show movement
Generational abuse cycles (in general)

That should be a good starting point for you...since you're so interested in these subjects. I'm sure you knew that the subject wasn't just as simple as black and white...and I'm sure you know that in order to understand the length, width and breadth of the issue, you'll have to spend more than a couple of hours in your American History high school text book.
Or did you really think that was all there was to know and understand? Of course you didn't. You're a smart guy.
If you want some books, I'll be happy to recommend them to you.
But please...understand you're talking with someone who's not an idiot. vague statements with no real meaningful basis will get blown the hell up in a debate with me.
If you want to run with a Big Dog, you'll have to run hard.
Ive had alot of black friends.Though i cant say i have a good history with black people,me and my friends used to get jumped alot and messed with by black kids.I got mugged in the middle of the night for my psp by some black dudes.Everytime me or my friend see a large group of black dudes we look out.Ive come to the conclusion that the reason black people use that word is because of miseducation,i dont think that word should be used at all.Imo i believe that black dudes these days just use a white person saying that word as an excuse to beat someone up.xxDustmanxx
There are many contributing factors. Miseducation is one of the biggest ones. Not to be forgotten are:
Simple lack of education.
Self-hate.
Poverty (and subsequent issues).
Mass-Media (the brand of rap that the corporate world loves to sell).
Lack of historical perspective.
Lack of pride.
Desire to fit in (simple peer pressure).
Sometimes it's all of those things; sometimes just one or two. There are other factors as well...but these are the most clear and present.
What ever happend to sticks and stones?hooperfax006It was always a lie. Even kids saying that were often trying to blurt it out in the midst of tears.

Can you recommend some anyway? I might pick one up.
On this particular subject specifically, or on other related subjects? they all kinda touch each other, but still...may be eaiser to have a starting point rather than me list 15 books. lol

first of all, to your above post you need to say more than "lol. It certainly is not." to counter my argument. look at who represents the black community. look at their stances. they are the role models to which young people look up to, and the ones who propagate the "poor me" mentality going on. most black comedians base a vast majority of their comedy on race. most rappers use the word that blacks despise so much.
i understand you are well versed in the subject, at least on your position. i hate to disappoint you but i am not so uneducated as you had hoped. last semester i was threatened and insulted because of my views on the subject, yet i still received an A in the class because my positions were backed up well.
ive taken my foundations of american history and humanities courses and i understand what happened to shape our history, but there comes a point when you cannot use historical injustices to justifyeverything. i understand all of the issues you have cited and the social, economic, and personal effects they have, but it does not justify the animosity towards whites that is brandished so easily.
i never mentioned my gut, or limited life experience, or BET, or anything of the like so can that crap. how aboutreal life examples? how about afamily in my area whose lives were threatened because of a halloween display with a noose? people were in thestreets threatening to burn the house down, crying about their ancestors (who igaurantee they never cared about until they were useful as a citationagainst something that insulted them). this man should not have to fear for his life over something that was A) perfectly legal, and B) something that someone else finds offensive. while it is nice to consider others' feelings, we are under no such obligation to do so.
for the record, calling someone a name is not assault. trust me ive been onboth sides of this legally. ive had someone harrass my family and threatened them, and ended up in court over the matter, and inversely i have a friend who was both delivering and receiving every slur you can imagine to someone in a dispute, who was in the end threatened. the other party tried to use the racial card but the officer said it and i smiled "calling names is not illegal, threatening is".
i hate to use a movie quote in such an argument, but a mediocre movie you may know, the american president, had a superb speech which included comment on the right to free expression which i will cite for you:
You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.

It's all interesting stuff, really.
Maybe a book that deals with several of these topics. Even though that would obviously require going less in-detail with the topics, it could be a good starting point for people getting a general idea of how complex these issues are.
Edit: Basically just a book that you think would be a good, educational read. I'm not really looking for anything in particular.
As a black dude im going to tell you all why white people cant say the N word. Well first of all they en slaved "n*ggers" (take note that was the primary name for blacks back then) for 400 years and degraded us and called our race with that word. Now lets go in the early 1900's where blacks are free and the N word is not acceptable to the blacks because they arent slaves anymore, but most whites still use it. Now lets go in the future to the 50's-70's, blacks try to get equal rights and are segregated. Please note at this time The N word is the word that is direspectful at this time and blacks will fight back mostly when said to them by a white person. There are alot of lynchings on blacks where blacks are hanged on trees shot and have there bodies pissed on and called the n word by the white man because its degrading toward blacks and the white men know blacks dont like it. Now lets go to our time around 2000-to present time. This is where myself comes in. I been black for 18 and a half years and during those years i have experienced mor racism than about 20 white dudes put together. Now racism doesnt happen everday for me and it doesnt happen very often but it will be here i know that very much. Anyway lets look at the news 6 blacks dudes beat up a white dude get charged with attempted murder because they sat under a tree for only whites. Sounds like we are back in the 1900's right? Or how about the group of whites that kidnapped a black girl recently and everytime they stabbed her they yelled the n word. Im not just saying whites do the hate crimes cause lol everyone knows the percentage of crimes done by blacks in america. What im trying to say is that racism exist today and is all around us. I know for most of you being white you will never understand. But for a white man to say the n word after it was meant to degrade us and segregate us I will not stand for it!! Personally if any white person says the n word while im around is gonna get something. Now for the topic title, blacks can simply say the n word because blacks didnt degrade each other, even though some blacks sold slaves too back in the day. Blacks didnt lynch on eachother hang them from trees and shout the n word at eachother while whipping them. They didnt segregate each other and say you cant go to or eat at this place. All those things that happend in the past but what white people need to understand when asking the topic question they need to see that racism is still strong today. Thats why i refuse to have a white person saying the n word because im not his slave and most likely they dont really know what that word means. But when you are white i know you will not understand. But there is no double standard blacks can call you white boy and cracker even though it is waaay disrespectful to call a white person that its not as much racist than saying the n word to blacks. Its simple as that. There is no double standard you may think its not fair, but as you see in the world there is no double standard. It is how it is if you hate it do something about it.kurama2002
your entire argument has no merit as soon as you segregate yourself by saying "us"(you), as humanity is supposed to be one whole. maybe if you did not segregate yourself so much you would stop feeling so isolated. no one is saying you havent experienced racism but i think its funny when a black person does not realise the hypocrisy of saying that white people have not, when we cannot even speak without every word being monitored for approval by blacks. everyone freaked over michael richards using the word, but no one freaked over the audience members calling him cracker.
and your comment that blacks can say it because they didnt degrade each other, while they owned slaves and they even have hate between varying darkness of their skin, makes you look foolish.
People can't make assumptions about this stuff. Even though the vast majority of Blacks are foolish to use the N word some of us like myself do not use the word. I don't like Black people using the word more than anyone else, because theyre directly degrading themselves at the same time. Unfortunately as time has shown, idiots are going to be idiots, and you just have to ignore those people.

You think we are the same but no we are not the same. There are white people and black people. Animals are a whole but there are lions and bears. I segregate myself because the racism i experienced in my life has a big impact on me psychologically. I did not even say white people havent experienced racism. Did you even read what i typed?? I said i have probably experienced more racism than 20 white men put together. Are you on this topic trying to defend that white people can say the n word? If thats the case then why did you put "we cannot even speak without every word being monitored for approval by blacks". If you want white people to say the same things as black then say whats on your mind. You act like your scared or something. You have your right as a human to speak your mind. And about the Kramer situation..... here we go again the ignorance of some white people that dont understand. Those black men had the right to defend themselves for all the racist rants he said to them. This is what the whole topic is about that black people can call white people cracker and white boy and not vice versa cause that how America was built and molded. Thats just how it is plain and simple. Cracker doesnt have a violent and discriminating history like the n word.
If you watched 'The Boondocks' you would know what the N-word ACTUALLY means.
N-word has been completely re-defined, not everyone knows it yet though.
The short definiton is 'someone who is ignorant'
now, the N word with an ER at the end, still means the same thing..
Most of you guys need to go out moreif you need to ask a stupid question like "Why can only black people say the N word?"
When white people first started saying the word, it was meant as a insult to black people aswell as a racist remark.
Black people changed it so they can say it without it sounding racist. For them, saying, "hey whats up N Word" is like saying "whats up homie".
It also has to do with the rap image.
Why can only Mexicans say "whats up esse" or "whats up vato". Again, its a image thing.
If your white and you try to say that. It will not work. Its like having a black gangsterrapper start dressing in skater clothes or EMO clothes. It conflicts against their image.
We all have different images. Somehave the image of a skater. So we dress as skaters
Others have a image as a gangster. So they dress as gangster
Some have the image as a computer nerd so they look like a nerd.
Some of us have different skin colors. That also plays a deal with out image.
Lawyers usually dress in nice suits. They dont dress in punk or gangster clothes. Again, its a image thing. If your not black or brown, dont say the N Word. That easy
you are off your rocker here. comparing bears to lions is comparing different species. i am curious, i am a human being, what species are you? is your species "black" . you say yourself you segregate yourself, thats your choice, but its not the fault of "white people". and you really have no way of substantiating that you have experienced more racism than 20 white people put together, so why make the claim.
furthermore, who cares? your problems are your own. they are important but women are discriminated against, native americans, gays, fat people, "ugly" people, all are discriminated against. sure blacks have had it among the worst IN THE PAST, but its like the progress our society makes does not matter because in the past it had been a lot worse.
i am not specifically defending the use of the word by whites, what i am defending is equal rights among all people to say whatever the hell they want, so long as it is not a threat. if you want to say the word is threatening to you, then i have just as much right to claim the word cracker is threatening to me.people need to stop dwelling on the history of what happened, and start taking equal stances in order to move forward. the history of the word is irrelevant. if you choose to dwell on history as opposed to progress, that is your own problem.OneWingedAngeI
Racist whites still call blacks the n word today so whites shall not say it without it being a threat. Basically what your saying is...white people who arent racist can say the n word without it being a threat. Okay in that case im not racist toward hispanics so im gonna go call them a wetback....it wont be a threat cause im not racist.

Well said but some whites just dont get that. Its like white people want everything. They cry and whine about BET or the Latin music awards. For gosh sakes the country is already yours white people!! Let minorities have some stuff please. Its just like if a asain person went to a all black country. Im pretty sure that asain person is gonna want some of his culture there.
Does anyone have to say the word?Samwel_X
again, i agree.
Aslo, noty all African americans say the word, some people even *gasp* find it deragatory, even if *gasp* an african american says it.

lol that's exactly what i, and the law, am saying. calling someone a name is not a threat. insinuating the possibility of harm is a threat. there is a huge difference.
i honestly don't see how people don't see this as a Bad Thing?
In All honesty most jobs and interviews dislike the word even in Slang Use, it's looked down upon from most people, even if it's not used in a bad way it's still looked down upon escpecially when you're trying to present yourself in a good way...
Black people are cool and nice people no doubt about it, but i honestly think the amount of black and or rich white wannabe gangsters really give black people a horrible name, no wonder at times like these White Supremacy Exists... and alot of times you'll even notice that the Black people are on the Majorityof them don't make it to good colleges alot of times. It's not there fault it's the way they are brought up, i'm not racist but i'm stating facts as records have proven that Blacks and or African Americans areone of the majority's don't make it to good Colleges and many of them even get worst education in HighSchool.
People tend to hire less Blacks because of this, though studies have shown that Asians have a tendency to get higher scores and better jobs why is this? I would say because 1 reason is that Asians don't degrade themselves to the extent Blacks and or African Americans do.

Actually alot of people say the N word as a joke, it's basically what it's become atleast thats what i've noticed.
Racially offensive words should not be used by anyone. I'm a white South African, and we have a word that starts with the letter K that would be comparable to the N word.
Only a small minority of white right-wing racists still use that word and only when they're alone. You'd literally get arrested for using it in public or a beating. Thanks goodness the black people in SA don't use it.
Any words that perpetuate racial hate should be banned in my humble opinion. They shouldn't be used by anyone, no matter what their race.
i dont want to sound ignorant but why can only black people say that word? You dont really see white people walking around calling each other cracker casually. I dont mean to sound ignorant in any way, it just confuses me a bit.Film-Guy
[QUOTE="OneWingedAngeI"][QUOTE="kurama2002"][QUOTE="OneWingedAngeI"]you are off your rocker here. comparing bears to lions is comparing different species. i am curious, i am a human being, what species are you? is your species "black" . you say yourself you segregate yourself, thats your choice, but its not the fault of "white people". and you really have no way of substantiating that you have experienced more racism than 20 white people put together, so why make the claim.
furthermore, who cares? your problems are your own. they are important but women are discriminated against, native americans, gays, fat people, "ugly" people, all are discriminated against. sure blacks have had it among the worst IN THE PAST, but its like the progress our society makes does not matter because in the past it had been a lot worse.
i am not specifically defending the use of the word by whites, what i am defending is equal rights among all people to say whatever the hell they want, so long as it is not a threat. if you want to say the word is threatening to you, then i have just as much right to claim the word cracker is threatening to me.people need to stop dwelling on the history of what happened, and start taking equal stances in order to move forward. the history of the word is irrelevant. if you choose to dwell on history as opposed to progress, that is your own problem.kurama2002
Racist whites still call blacks the n word today so whites shall not say it without it being a threat. Basically what your saying is...white people who arent racist can say the n word without it being a threat. Okay in that case im not racist toward hispanics so im gonna go call them a wetback....it wont be a threat cause im not racist.
lol that's exactly what i, and the law, am saying. calling someone a name is not a threat. insinuating the possibility of harm is a threat. there is a huge difference.

i highly doubt the majority of people using that word even really mean that, it probably already has lost all of that meaning, all it really means now is "brother" and or "black brother".

Yes i see what your are saying now. But there is no way in hell thats gonna happen. You know and i know that whites saying the n word on a regular basis is not going to happen. But you still didnt give me a answer why would a white guy want to say the n word?

That sounds like an excuse if you ask me.Anyone over the age of 18 should know what to say and what not to say, the only people that would have a problem with that are children because they don't know any better.
