We don't hate it. Most Americans are just mislead to believe that socialized healthcare is bad. Our government (as well as HMOs) has built up propaganda that is used to make us think we have the best healthcare in the world. When actually it sucks.
Because they feel it results in poor patient care. To some extent, this is true... but for most people, the benefits of inexpensive or free healthcare outweigh the discrepancy in service quality, especially if they would receive NO healthcare if it weren't inexpensive or free. Only the wealthy (who can easily afford expensive care) are really affected by this, and since most people try to model themselves after the wealthy - even when most will never be wealthy themselves - they throw their lot in with the wealthy philosophy that it is better to pay for the best care than to receive adequate care for nothing.
Probably there is an underlying phobia of anything socialist in there too. Many people are enormously selfish, and can't stand the thought of paying money for other peoples' treatment when they themselves have no use for the system at that moment.

Actually no. The resistence to socialized medicine comes primarily from the problems inherent in the system.
[QUOTE="quiglythegreat"]Because it's communist.edd678
Not really...
That's the connotation associated with Universal Healthcare, though.
Because Americans have dreamy ideals of "freedom" and "capitalism", and reject anything that even hints at socialism, even if it's extremely beneficial. bman784
I rather pay for a doctor that cares a little bit about me than get a doctor that doesnt give a crap about me for free

And what is wrong with communism??
It's not very American. I remain convinced that collective welfare has been resisted by the American people simply because we fashion ourselves as all totally capable of pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps and making a ton of money. That's all American. Paying for someone else's medical bills...not so much. It's entirely neurotic; America does not have very much social mobility anyway and in any event, why shouldn't people get free health care? The American dream says that people who can't afford to get treatment are just so lazy they deserve to die.[QUOTE="bman784"]Because Americans have dreamy ideals of "freedom" and "capitalism", and reject anything that even hints at socialism, even if it's extremely beneficial. crazychris

Yes, because doctors cease caring about patients when universal healthcare is present. :|
For the record, as LJS pointed out 'free' healthcare is not free. The doctors get paid through taxation of the general population, and so the cost is distributed amongst everyone, rather than absorbed only by those who are unfortunate enough to develop serious medical problems.

Problems in the system? Well, every 'system' is sure to have problems. But I don't ever hear anyone in canada or europe complaining about their healthcare system.
Nor are they complaining about high taxes, which is the thing that most people bring up when it comes universal healthcare.

Then listen harder. They have been complaints in Canada and the UK....not sure about the rest of Europe.

Agreed. The British NHS gets to much bad rep. I myself have been in hospital 3 tiems for serious matters and every single time have been treated superbly. No complaints from me.

Low income families are covered by social agencies.

Right....because all the 'good' doctors in the world only care about making money. Not their professional integrity?
In America, we throw patients out on the street if they can't afford to pay or don't have insurence. Is that what you call 'caring'?

yeah when i almost died for not be able to breath right they took me to the hospital and i spent over a week there and it did no cost me a penny . in america you would have a huge bill[QUOTE="crazychris"][QUOTE="bman784"]Because Americans have dreamy ideals of "freedom" and "capitalism", and reject anything that even hints at socialism, even if it's extremely beneficial. pianist

The current capitalist model of healthcare is probably far more inefficient than a government-run system would be because the companies milk the consumer for everything they're worth. Medical services are expensive, yes, but the bulk of the expense in our system comes from medication and liability insurance, two things that could be a little phased out with at least more government intervention.[QUOTE="bman784"][QUOTE="crazychris"][QUOTE="bman784"]Because Americans have dreamy ideals of "freedom" and "capitalism", and reject anything that even hints at socialism, even if it's extremely beneficial. Even if we do have to pay taxes its way cheaper then anything the U.S has to offer. I could go to the doctor five times a month and i would be paying nothing when the average American would be paying 200+$ I mean sure i got the taxes but its not near as bad as paying that much just to see the doctor.
All this talk about how our hospitals suck and we got waiting times. That's another load of crap that glenn beck was spurting on CNN. Our doctors are good and are hospitals and clinics are fine. At least its not as bad as
"Hes going to need a kidney transplant do you guys have the money?"
what happens if you dont? Oh he dies......yeah crappy.
Also stop saying our doctors don't care because for one thing they do

I had hoped that the :| would be sufficient to suggest the sarcasm... but it looks like that isn't the case. For the record - yucky and quigly - my post was intended not to support the post I quoted, but to decry it. I am a supporter of universal healthcare.

B F'n S my friend. Ask a poor person what would happen if they got really sick.
I work in a company that does not offer it's warehouse workers medical insurence. Only office employees like myself. They always tell me how they are in pain but can't go to the doctor or denist because they can't afford it. No agency helps them.
Imagine if someone you loved couldn't receive medical help when they are in pain.

you do know that hospitals are required to provide emergancy care, money or no money right? i seriously doubt you wouldn't have been saved here.
To a certain extent, yes. But there are still numerous circumstances where care is denied because of an inability to pay, or a lack of insurance. It's not a good system by any measure.
bman784
They can't turn away someone that needs care. You will, however, be sent a bill for the services.

And what is wrong with communism??
Would you rather have lived in East Germany or West Germany? North Korea or South Korea? Russia or the US/Western Europe? Also see 2 and 3.I would rather live in a leninist russia. Lenin was a genious. Unfortunately stalin took over and ****ed it up big time. Most communist states have been corrupted into totalitarianism. Rather than spreading the wealth the leader keeps all the wealth to himself. Lenins Regime wasn't like this and actualy worked.
i live in canada and watch cnn from time to time. i keep hearing them say no free health care. But why! why do you guys love paying 1000s of $ for somthing we get free. free health care works fine in canada and europe . in america they let people die cus they dont have money or let them lose an arm cus they dont have the cash to get it put back on.deadmeat59
You know the NHS isn't 'free'. We pay considerably more tax on pretty much everything eg $10 (£5) for a gallon of petrol (gas if you must). And the NHS is pretty useless.
It's not free. You pay more taxes than we do partially because you have "free" social services we lack. ElraptorYeah we know about the taxes. You cant disagree though....its better to pay the 10$ for every 100$ bill here then it is to pay for health care. I dont know one person up here who has complained about it. Paying money to see a doctor is crap. Paying money for a operation is just more crap.
Personally i love this country's laws and i don't think i could ever live in the U.S. Paying to see a doctor is just not normal......
Just the other day i was watching a movie that was based on a true story when a dad and mom were poor and there kid needed a heart transplant or he would die. Guess what? The family didn't have the money and they threw the kid out like nothing.
Anybody who calls that "Awesome health care" are just.....woah.
