That's being a bit picky isn't it. Does that mean we have to call into question the degree ones body must be bent to constitute a bow?

ragek1ll589

No, it does matter. If I shook your hand and made a little head nod, then that isn't weird at all. A lot of people do it as a show of respect. But if I shook your hand and then proceeded to bow down at the waist where I am now looking down at your feet, then you would say wtf.. why are you bowing to me? It is completely different body language.

Of course I would be a bit perplexed since I am neither royalty nor a foreign diplomat/leader who is shown respect via a bow.

So you are admitting that there is a big difference in the body language between a small head bow and a full bow at the waist. That was my point exactly. People are acting like it is the same thing - it's not.

I haven't gotten this picture out in a while, but what you just said deserves it

OTfacepalm.jpg OT facepalm picture by Serraph105

So then tell me... if I shook your hand and gave a little head bow, then that would be pretty normal, right? Now what if I shook your hand and then bowed all the way down at the waist to where my torso was parallel with the ground. That's a bit different, no?

That's a bit more than a "little head bow" that those Presidents are demonstrating there.

No, it's really not at all. And one of those isn't just a leader, it's the Pope. Look up Obama bowing and you will see a huge difference. And if you look at the Eisenhower picture, look in De Gaulle's hand. He is presenting something to Eisenhower and he is bowing slightly before accepting it. The Nixon one is a slight mutual bow.

Obama bowing down at the waist is completely different.

There is a difference but if you look at the images, especially Nixon, those are a bit more than a small head bow. Again does this mean we have to establish a threshold as to what is a bow and what is a head nod.

I explained this already. 1. In the Eisenhower picture, he is accepting something from De Gaulle. He is slightly bowing before accepting what looks like some type of a medal. 2. In the Nixon one, it is a slight mutual bow. 3. In the Bush one, he is meeting with the Pope, and Bush is only bowing his head.

Just look at the body language. There is a huge difference. In the Nixon photo, they are both bowing to each other out of respect, still holding eye contact. Obama was bowed all the way down at the waist, looking down at the ground. That is a HUGE difference in body language.

You do realize that Obama is the only President to ever to bow to anyone anywhere, not even Nixon bowed to the Chinese back in the 70s. Where is Michelle Obama while he is visiting Arab heads of state? She is the first First Lady to not be included in tours of Arab countries. The Navy vet isn't off base, he can see it, even if he can't personally write about it.

BMD004

He is? That's news to me.

A small head bow is not the same thing as bowing all the way down at the waist.

I see...

People need to stop wanting him to please people from other countries, and should worry more about pleasing your own people, here in the country you live in. If it was up to other countries, this country wouldn't be where it is today.

Not to Bush, he's a United Methodist, which is a variant of protestant Christianity. Bush Jr. had no obligation to hold him in a "holiest of holy" regard.

Furthermore, the Saudi King whom Obama bowed to is also a leader, is held in high regard by many muslims in Saudi Arabia, as he has the divine right to rule, ergo, the holiest of the State. This doesn't seem much different from your Bush scenario.

His guts? Some ignorant, right-wing buffoon spews his stupid views at the President and you commend him for having 'guts'? That isn't gutsy, that's being loud, obnoxious and wrong.

So? Obama is merely respecting traditions. There's a difference between standing up for your country and being disrespectful. It's pretty obvious that you're just trying to find ANYTHING to blame Obama for.

And how do you know that you're not just seeing what you want to see or that your opinion is not just based off of the nation that he doesn't line up with your personal view of what is "American"?

It's not about what the radical left think what is "american" even if they're entitled to think whatever they want, it's about when you're the leader of America, you have to be PRO-AMERICA, what you do should ALWAYS be in America's best interests, ALWAYS, NO EXCEPTIONS, even when your political views make you want to be partial to anti-american interests.

I don't need to "justify" what YOU'd call "US imperialism", when it's just America being the most powerful country in the world, if you're fishing for "imperialism", look at China or Russia. You're either a big dog or you're not, and if you're a big dog, act like one, there's no need to hate, the world would be a whole lot worse and much less safewithout American dominance.

[QUOTE="worlock77"]

[QUOTE="BMD004"] 1. I don't literally mean only his head went down. It is just a slight bow, with the head moving the most. That is what you do when you accept an award. 3. Bush is meeting with the Pope, who is not only a leader, but he is held in high regard by many Christians. He is the Holiest of the Holy.BMD004

1. Do you know for a fact that he's accepting a major award or anything, or are you just assuming that's what's going on? 2. So? What difference does that make? Why should he be bowing to anyone, let alone a religious leader?

I never said a slight bow was bad. But this is a huge difference:

Yes, it is a huge difference; in that picture, Obama is the one doing the bowing, as opposed to a president of whom you approve. :P

No, I don't care who the president is. I don't even personally find it as being a huge deal in the great scheme of things. But to say there is no difference in body language between that deep bow and a small head bow while maintaining eye contact is stupid.

One's a bow, the other is a bow. They're both bowing. As others have said, the real difference is that the size differential in this case is large. I would say that this is making a mountain out of a molehill, but it's not even a molehill; it's flat ground.

What truth? He provided little-to-no detail and he strayed off-topic for a large portion of his message.

[QUOTE="Stevo_the_gamer"]I admire the honesty, and the bravery. I wish I could shake this man's hand!chrysippus_
Bravery? How is that brave? What, is he gonna be hauled off and beaten by Obama's goons? Oh wait, there will be no repercussions whatsoever.

I certainly hope the bravery he was talking about is the time he spent in WWII, rather than simply writing a letter.

This. If the praise was on writing a letter, then theamazingatheist on Youtube deserves a salute.

One's a bow, the other is a bow. They're both bowing. As others have said, the real difference is that the size differential in this case is large. I would say that this is making a mountain out of a molehill, but it's not even a molehill; it's flat ground.

But it's not the same. It has nothing to do with the size differential. Just because you are a lot taller than someone doesn't mean you bow all the way down to their level so that they are taller than you. That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

Sometimes, when you shake somebody's hand, you may give a very small bow, head nod, whatever you want to call it. Imagine this scenario. Imagine you are a famous basketball player. Imagine I am a rookie player in the league. If I met you, I might shake your hand and give a very slight bow, mostly with my head. It is common body language for somebody you respect. However, imagine in that same scenario, if I just all out bowed 90 degrees at the waist to you when I shook your hand. You would be thinking... wtf? Why is this guy bowing down to me like this?

It is completely different body language. They may both be called a "bow" in name only. But the two things we are talking about are completely different.
