Within 5 minutes of the movie begining he made me turn it off because of the first gay kiss scene. He then went on to say that he "did not want to see that garbage" and that "there is something wrong with gay people" and that "it should be illegal to be gay and "Milk is not a real movie, its a gay porno" and finally he told me "I should not expose the family to this filth". (By the way I am not homosexual).

So what are your thoughts on my Dad's reaction? I knew that he did not like gay people, but I had no idea he had that much hatred towards them.

I wouldn't be comfortable watching a scene like that, especially with a family member. But I would say he overreacted a bit.

[QUOTE="The_Solid"]Think god my parents are open-minded. Sad,he must be gay(your dad),most gay people get married to get kids and keep there parents happy. No offence.

Why the "no offense?" I'm going to say your dad is a bigot. A down right scared, bigot. You want me to rate it? I'll say this: his reaction was silly, and childish. The same thing was said in my 10TH GRADE American Studies class. He has reduced himself to a 15 year old. But the fact that he hold his morals strong and wants to keep his family "safe" is something that I admire. Even though I think his definition of safe is quite the opposite.

You should inform him that you are of the new open minded generation and are not of the narrow minded thick skulled neanderthal generation that he is a part of and that you have no hate or ill will toward the gay populace. And then tell him you are going to watch the movie regardless and tell him to leave the room if it really bothers him that much.

If the reaction follows any pattern of behavior your father normally follows just chalk it up to his personality. Nothing more to it, he clearly doesn't like gay people. I have known people like that my whole life, at this point it does not even warrant a reaction anymore. I simply say that I do not share the same views, and I would appreciate if they respect that.

Now, if this is completely out of left-field then your dad may need a hug. Ask him if he was ever touched by one of his uncles.

Btw, if you can not tell the second part is a joke, I apologize.

I did get a chance to watch it later. I think the movie was good, but a bit overrated. Still one of the better films from 2008.

He has been baptized as a Christian (Methodist Denomination) but he never ever ever goes to church with me and the rest of my family. I can't even remember the last time he has been to church.

I have a similar situation with my grandpa (except with affrican americans instead of homosexuals). He can not not say the "N" when refering to black people. He's not quite as bad as your dad but still. But the big shocker is he actuall voted for Obama. That McCain guy MUST be bad.

Anyway, your dad's reaction was entirely unreasonable.

But he is a dad, likely (relatively old) and therefore past learning. You get to a certain age (over 40) or status (parent) and you can believe what you want without fear of discrimination.

Its just sad, though, your dad reacted that way.

With all due respect, your father's a bigot. To walk out is one thing, but to demand you turn the movie off and say all those things is seriously ignorant, close-minded and probalby homophobic.

Its just sad, though, your dad reacted that way.

I remember when I was like, 5 and I was watching Night Court with my dad. Anyway, do you remember the character Dan Felding? You know, that womanizing dude played by John Larroquette? Anyway, I recall that there was one case in which Dan Felding met a gay guy and started acting uncomfortable, and the audience (laugh track) laughed, and I just sort of laughed along with it.

And at that point, my dad was horrified. He'd let me watch Alien and The Thing, and my parents had taught me about sex and even let me keep pet bugs so that I could watch them mate and have babies. We'd watch horror movies and laugh about some jerks getting killed off by the monster, and that **** was all cool. But when my dad saw me laughing at gay people, he drew the line right there.

He turned that freaking TV off, scolded me severely and gave me a serious talk about morality, and god bless him for doing that.

I am surprised by some of the responses in this thread. Yes, he did overreact; but many of your responses are just as bad, if not worse than his. If you think you're better than him because you're "more tolerant", re-read your own post and think again.

beats me what was up with him, altho it is normal human behavior to act that way to things they do not really understand.

If he has never been exposed to any gay people, I guess it is somewhat natural (especially considering his age).

so a mix of lack of exposure, and the beliefs given to him by his own parents, is a likely cause.

Not much to do against that, well unless you start inviting gay people home (its no joke, my own dad became alot more open minded after me met a lesbian friend of mine).

I would advise you to just accept that flaw of his, no human biengs are perfect, so do not bother...
