DayZ is a mod that changes ArmA II drastically. It turns the whole of the continent within the game into an open-world zombie survival thriller. There are tons of servers you can join, and each server can contain 50-100 other players. Group up with others or go lone wolf. Not only do you have to watch out for zombies in this game but also other players.

DayZ is probably the best time I've had playing a video-game in at least a few years. It's such a thrill-ride. The mod has been getting an overwhelming amount of support and attention from both fans and the ArmA devs (Bohemia Interactive). In fact DayZ was such a success, Bohemia has given Rocket (the creator of the mod) a position at Bohemia. He supposedley will be making a stand alone DayZ on the ArmA III engine.

Unfortunatley, the ARMA forums are nearly dead here on gamespot. I think that is partly because no one knows which forums to use. They have ARMA: OA, which is what the game boots off of, and the ARMA: 2 which is where DayZ is set, and ArmA: Combined Ops forums which includes both.

I know a lot of people here have been posting images and making references to the mod here on the PC forums, so I figured it might be a good idea to start a thread based on the MOD only. NON-DAYZ related material should obviously belong in the respected ArmA II forum.

DayZ was featured in Rooster Teeth on 6/13/12-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhNFjGyYS7c&feature=channel&list=UL

So what to do in this thread? How about...

*Post Some Pictures

*Share Stories

*Make Alliances

*Post your videos

*ETC.

I play DayZ a lot and would love to team up with some of you guys. Here is some content I have from DayZ.

I want this, but I don't want to put the vanilla ArmA II part to waste..
I tried to get into ArmA II through the demo and stuff, but I couldn't get out of feeling weird and sluggish while playing it :c and I like Project Reality so much, the idea of it is nice to mee

Arma III looks sexy and I wish that I could've got into ArmA II..

(any tips for how people got used to it?)

The UI is absolutely terrible and clunky, you will grow accustomed to it though after a bit of playing. Take your time while moving around the map, crouch run & prone often. Once you get used to it the game really becomes very immersive and VERY tense.

yeah, the movement and stuff makes sense. Though I thiiink that I'm used to moving slower in a game, ArmA seems a bit different with it than other games. That's fine though. Pacing and other gameplay elements that take some getting used to are fine, especially when it gets as good as I hear this game does!

But I guess the UI is partially what got me. That and just moving the character around seemed clunky.. I'll give it another shot I think.

I feel like a 'scrub' or something for not being able to get the hang of it ):

Did you go for the singleplayer missions first (aside from the training I suppose), or did you go right into the multiplayer?

The mod is pretty broken right now. Zombied will detect you through walls, attack you through walls, and RUN through walls to kill you. You might be sneaking along beside a 2-foot think concrete wall only to get smacked by a zombie; you might run back and turn to see the zombie right behind you.

They should make it so that zombies can't open doors; if you manage to escpae into a house and close the door, you should be able to wait for the zombie(s) to avoid attracting like 10 nearby ones by firing a shot.

That being said the mod has huge potential, sneaking around a small town with zombies everywhere is super tense, and the massive size of the world makes exploration really compelling. I'm looking forward to playing the mod more as it gets patched.

I installed DayZ last night, pretty cool, takes a lot of patience. maybe even more than playing ARMA 2 in it's normal form.

I enjoy the game but I have a lot of complaints. I really wish ArmA 2 had better anti-cheating protection. Hackers being able to simply nuke servers isn't cool. I really hope they find a way to improve the zombies. Their behavior right now is not very zombie-like. It sucks like ArmA 2 wasn't designed with any form of melee in mind.

You can fix the blurry trees when you have antialiasing on by editing the Arma2Co.cfg in C:\Users\Yourname\Documents\ArmA 2

Look for and change "AToC=7" (default) to "AToC=0"

True. However it is in alpha. It's still very playable and enjoyable. The most annoying thing being some of the zombie mechanics. Zombies are a bit fast, sometimes walk through walls, and also respawn to quick. Other than that, the problems are few and far apart.

Pics from today.

In berezino now. Will be looking for vehicles the next few playthroughs.

looks like you have some great gear.

I had a good run today, snuck solo through a city and only had one or two minor zombie encounters. Heard lots of gun fire early on but managed to avoid contact with people.

I picked up a ALICE pack, a winchester with lots of ammo, a colt 1911 with lots of ammo, loads of food drinks and flares, binoculars, a compass, and a watch.

I got out of the city unharmed and went to investigate a factory. I wanted to get up high and scope the city to see if I could see any of the people I'd heard firing earlier. When I got there, I heard a bunch of gunfire in one of the buildings. I looked into the building where it was coming from and saw a bunch of dead zombies and this guy frozen in place looking at the ceiling. I typed "friendly" and searched around for other players, making sure no one else was around. I was going to leave but spotted a silenced pistol on the ground beside this frozen guy. I walked in and it turns out the guy was dead but his body was glitched in a standing position with the arms still holding the gun.

I grabbed the silenced pistol and the few clips for it lying around, thinking it would be super useful, and just as I was about to leave a blast of AK rounds landed in my head and ended my life. I HATE people who shoot on sight with no attempt to make contact.

Very true, especially close in-land. It's a different world up north. No one is friendly once you get up there. Everyone is too afraid to lose their **** Me and my friend John got ambushed today, but managed to get out alive by taking cover in a building and throwing a bottle of whiskey at the enemy which attracted 20-30 zombies towards the dude. It was pretty epic.

According to a Steam discount sale graph, and if history repeats itself, Arma 2: Combined Operations should be on one of Steam's Daily Sales this summer. Watch out for it. They will probably price it at $15. I'm waiting for the steam version because I tried using the retail version and there are too many update issues and other problems. I should have listened and purchased the steam version.

Ok, I REALLY need someone to tell me how you throw objects to distract zombies.

I'll let these images speak for themselves

After finding the bike at the beginning of my life, I tried dashing into a town to grab some supplies before making my escape; I took a good deal of damage from zombies and burnt through all of my ammo. I made it back to my bike and fled the town, but a crap load of zombies were chasing me. Even though I could outrun them on my bike they kept on following, just a long ways behind. I also attracted more as I went.

I ditched my bike and ran into this barn to try and find a weapon since i have a bunch of enfield and winchester ammo, but only found empty bottles and cans. There are about 10 zombies in the barn and like 50 more coming. I ditched out of the game at this point, if I spawn back in will the zombies still be swarming me? I still need an exit strategy.

that would be awesome, is there an in-game friends list? Or can you join games through steam.

The bike was just sitting in the middle of the road near the edge of a random small town by the coast, I didn't know whether or not you could interact with it so I went up to it and turns out I could. It even has a bell you can ring lol

Add me on steam (nickprovs). My friend and I use skype to chat, and we just coordinate which server to join.

It was great fun playing with other people; using landmarks to figure out where to meet up, then sprinting through a huge industrial complex with zombies chasing while being covered by snipers on a hill.

As I started running up the hill toward them, I was thinking that no other game offers this kind of experience. Looking fowrard to the patch that fixes zombies clipping through walls.

is it easy to find other players to group up just while in-game?

I know that some shoot other players on sight (which, I mean, seems annoying, but is also kind of a cycle. if they think other players might do that to them, then they might want to do it first)

It's basically one big server list that you can filter. So if you wanted dayz only servers you would just filter for dayz. Then you can sort all those servers out by the host name. The host name is always the state or country the server is being operated from. So there might be like 10 NY Servers and then 2 New Zealand Servers and then 4 OHIO servers etc.

It's still a mod, so in order to all get into the same server you just have to coordinate with eachother which one you want to go in.

Here's a pic from yesterday, we were covering with teeth. It's a little tough to see.

Exactly how buggy is it at this point? I know Arma II itself is still buggy as hell, and with a lot of reports of overstuffed servers, connection errors and weird deaths I was a bit skeptical to try this.

I'm going to be getting Combined Operations during the Summer Sale though, so I'm just interested.

As much as I love this game, I won't play it any more until its less broken.

I lost 2 of my most successful characters to glitches. The first, with an ALICE pack, good weapons, navigational equipment and blood-bags died when I tried to climb onto a ledge using the "vault over" button. Instead of climbing onto the ledge, I clipped into it and died.

I had another good run right after, picking up a AKS with a Kobra sight, another ALICE pack and a revolver+loads of other basic equipment. After patching the game however I spawned here:

arma2oa2012061719161644.png

I did some research, and I had to kill myself to escape this strange and horrible place.

After the patch, you spawn with no food, drink or weapon, so now every new player rushes into the nearest city, and the zombies are now more easily agitated, so the tense stealthing of before is now a bunch of new players with no guns desperately sprinting around with zombies in tow in hopes of finding a weapon.

Right now the game engine is a bigger threat than the other players and the zombies.

^^ That is creepy and hilarious at the same time. I spent about 3 hrs yesterday watching gameplay videos on Youtube, looks interesting. I saw quiet a bit of bugs that would annoy me to no end, like zombies killing through walls.

With_Teeth. Thank you for the wonderful feedback! That's really sad to hear as I was very much looking forward to entering Day Z during the 4th of July Weekend vacation. I'll probably still grab up Arma 2: Combined Operations if it goes on sale for $15, maybe $20. But I probably won't look to much into the Day Z mod as much as I would have liked. I'm not liking the zombie animations. In every single video gameplay that I've watched on Youtube, these zombies would sprint and teleport, they clip walls, stairs, just about everything. I wish he would work on animations. Make zombies walk slow towards you then start running faster and faster, and react differently to bullet shots, or a human coming near that isn't using crouch/stealth. I've seen zombies detect players that were pretty far away in crouch mode. I wish it was like The Walking Dead.

Fortification would work really well in this game, but the day and night cycles would mean, long waits for cool nighttime barricading. The dev that created Day Z said this and that about how his vision was to make a mod for Zombies that was the game everyone was looking for... but it's more like run a very far distance here... and maybe get to kill one or two zombies along the way.. grab some ammo here.. leave a ton of stuff behind because your packs full and you really don't need 'em.. and watch your head because bandits are all over the place.

It's not the definitive zombie game that I'm looking for and I love zombies in games and in general media like film. I guess I'll wait for Kickstarter to send Dead State and The Dead Linger my way. :P Btw, I've watched a ton of vids on this game.. I've spent literally hours watching gameplay and I haven't even played the game yet although I have tried but not having the Steam version screwed me up with updates and I couldn't get it to run.

If you do end up getting the steam version of Combined Ops, I'd recommend at least trying Dayz out. By the time it goes on sale, the mod might be more polished anyways. It has some amazing qualities, I LOVE how you need to navigate with a map and compass without the game showing where you are on the map, forcing you to use landmarks. This makes the long wilderness treks surprisingly compelling.

Its also very fun playing with other people, joining the same server and figuring out how you can meet up using landmarks, directions, even the sun. It is very exciting sneaking around towns, despite the ridiculous zombie animations and agitation triggers. Sprinting to a building with 5 zombies in tow, getting inside, turning around and pulling off five perfect head shots with five bullets is absolutely thrilling.

I'm not giving up on this mod by any means, its given me some of the most emotionally intense gameplay of anything in recent memory, I just think it needs a few more patches that deal with the zombie glitches and weird player spawns/deaths.

Your character is persistent on the server. You can log out and resume later. However, if you are killed, you character won't respawn and you will restart with close to no equipement or food.

So this is not compatible with the original Arma 2 and only the $30 Arma 2 CO version? That sucks but I guess I can wait for a sale..

By the way, does anyone know if I can have the GreenmanGaming version of Arma 2 vanilla installed, and then the Arma 2 Arrowhead off of steam, and have this work??? Or would I have to own both games on the Steam platform?

DayZ is the most fun ive had not only in a zombie game but in an online shooter style game in years.

Gets better with every update, there is some issues but whats here right nwo is still fun as hell if you give it a chance. Sure the zombie animations suck and there are some issues with them getting you threw walls,etc.. But for a game being in alpha state its pretty amazing.

The good far outweighs the bad for me personally for this mod.

Its slo hilarious to me that Day Z and Project ZOmboid, two games that are still in Alpha simply destroy all the other zombie games ive played over the years. I liekd L$D, I enjoyed Dead Island, but non of those are even clsoe to the unique experiences that DayZ and Project Zomboid can provide. While neither game is perfect, they both do atmosphere, gameplay better then any other zombie games ever.

Pretty much this, unfortunately there's an exploit some players are now using as a result. When close to dying or surrounsed by enemy zombies or bandits, they just quit and they are safe. If they quit after they die their body also disappears so all the loot they had is gone and can't be looted, and one annoying thing they can do in quit in the middle of a firefight, join another server and move somewhere safer, then rejoin the last server to kill the guy by spawning behind him or something.

the new patch just ruined this game. Food is very hard to come by, and you spawn with none, so half the time you starve to death even in a major city. Zombies spawn in buildings and still clip through walls, so even if you find a building with food in it, its probably full of zombies. Zombies also get aggrevated super easily now, its not uncommon to see a zombie sprinting towards you from 50+ meters away even though you were crouch-walking.

Congrats rocket, you didn't fix the two things you said you would, and managed to make the game even more broken.

I went into a supermarket unarmed and used direct chat to tell a guy in there I was friendly and unarmed. He said ok and then shot me. I see the devs plan to stop player killing is really working out.

To make matters worse, servers are spread across v. 1.7, 1.7.1 and 1.7.1.1. Half the servers don't even run the version they say they are on. I think i'll delete the mod and revert back to 1.7 because this is just awful.

I'd shoot a rando unarmed guy as well, that's more your own fault for telling him that.

Hm, I'm going to assume that you need to get the game from the same platform, or platforms that don't have DRM. Anyway, you can first buy ARMA II and then Arrowhead instead of Combined Ops.

why? that just makes you part of the problem. Please give me your in-game ID so I can avoid playing with you.

Oh, he's no threat to me and has nothing I could use. IMMA KILL HIM! People who treat this like deathmatch with zombies need to stop playing.
