The 5970 is a dual GPU. 480 in SLI mode smokes the 5970. I'd imagine that nvidia will come out with a 495 with 2 GPUs sooner or later which will truly rival the 5970.

It won't likely be possible for Nvidia to make a dual-GPU card based off the GTX 480, at least not within the PCI-Express standard. Any such card would surely be well over the limit for conforming to within the PCI-E standard. To put it simply- they don't let you make a card and call it a PCI-E card if it uses over a certain amount of power.

Well, it wouldn't be 2 x 250 watts. I'm sure their engineers will figure out a way.

if they do basically they just gonna have to do a new GPU Die around 26-32mm but ATI As Announce they may Release HD6850/6870 around 2011 Q1 which in the end will beat nvidia if they doesn't come with a higher plan such as you said a dual GPU solution because currently 480GT In sli is 499$US X2 = 1000$ : and 5970 = will drop to below 599$ US soon

But I bet we could expect HD5970 as low as 549.99$ AFTER MIR by June Even if Ati haven't officially announce a price drop but this would probably result in GTX 480 : below around 450$ :P or GTX485 Announced who know

but At least Nvidia Did there Promess that they would beat HD5870 : but it 499$ not 380/400$ :P but that was to be expect : but unless Driver Get mad increasement like Last year with F.E.A.r II & Cryisis Patch : we should expect GTX480 to be in majority of gamer resolution which is 1680x1050 to 1920x1080/1200 : to Be Close Fight for Maxing out / Enabling AA / AF 16X

I think you're expecting a little much. They're not going to be able to get 2 of the 470 or 480 GPUs into a dual-GPU package. The 470 uses over 215 watts by itself, and the 480 over 250 watts. How are they going to get 2 of these chips to use under 300 watts?

The only possible way is to shrink & use higher grade material and find another way to do the gpu but that likely not gonna happen there more chance bill gate finished to build is nuclear plant by then :) at least that what said fudzilla that he is intending to build one and those thing take forever to build

which leave only one way out for nvidia : reduce Massivly gpu cost per half of year and hope we sli them

The 480 in SLI annihilates the 5970. I was surprised at how well SLI worked with that card. It was practically twice as powerful. Of course, that was only from one set of benches, but hardocp is usually on point. Yea, the single cards aren't as impressive as we'd hoped, but neither was the 5000 series. At least, I wasn't very impressed with it.

WEll I thought the SLI performance was great. It was actually the only part of the release I thought was impressive. I also agree the 5K series was not the Most impressive thing, but it was more impressive than Nvidia's.

Not impressed with the HD5000 series? The 5870 was the most impressive high-end gpu since at least the 8800GTX, maybe even more so because of low msrp. True retailers jacked that up, but I was able to search around and get one for $340 in early December with cashback. True it didn't hold its lead as long as the 8800, but what wasn't impressive with the 5870? Low power compared to other high-end cards, relatively cool, overclocks like a champ, doesn't cost $500-600+ as previous Nvidia top cards have, first cards to support DX11, crushed previous gen single gpu cards and was right on the heels of the pricey gtx295. There's a reason they were sold out at soon as they hit the shelves and the price of a piece of hardware actually rose and has been above msrp for 6 months if you don't use cashback.

I have no idea lol. It is impressive though, but for over $1000 USD I think it is not worth it.

Get a waterblock and noise is irrelevant under load, my 5870 is silent at max oc :). My concern would be one 3x120 rad is no where near enough to cool sli 480s well.

How are you thinking? The HD5970 is a little more expencive but it's better also, the HD5970 uses less wattage, the HD5970 is about as big as the gtx480 is, the HD5970 runs mutch cooler than the gtx480 does, the HD5970 is silent when compared to the gtx480, You can still X-fire the HD5970! For SLI gtx480 you will need a 1KW PSU, i can tell you that a gtx495 will not arrive! This is why they are in all aspects comparable and the HD5970 are better even if it's a dual gpu or not, but theres a price diffrence ofc.

If they were to make a gtx495, it would probably be more along the lines of sli 470s, just like the 5970 is like cf 5850 because of the lower clocks, and gtx295 was like 260/275?. Not to say it is actually plausible at this time, but if Nvidia can fix their power and heat woes it may happen, as it has already been rumored in the works or at least planned.

The 5000 series are great cards no doubt about that. However it aint no 8800, no recent card has been.

The 8800 not only totally crushed everything of the past, it also gave significantly better image quality. Even the lower priced 8800GTS 640MB destroyed the 7950GX2 and X1950XTX 512MB. I think the 8800GTX was truly worth the monstorous price. Another significant thing about the 8800 is how much that thing has lasted, it's been 3.5 years now since their launch and they are still maxing most games on lower resolutions...and it remained top for a ridiculously long time, the 8800GTX was only truly dethroned by the 4870.

The current gen cards are unlikely to hold on for that long...

Well its a waste if you plan on using it for only dx 9/10 and where with dx 11 and all the features including high/full tessselation and pay nearly $700 when you can spend $350 For a GTX 470 and get nearly the same performance.

What other "features" of DX11 are you referring to besides tessellation? Considering the 5970 beat the GTX 480 9 times out of 10 I'm not seeing a reason here....

It's ordered, and picked. I'm picking it up on the way home from work. You guys have to remember I'm in Australia. :P Unfortunately once I started seeing the pricing for the GTX 480 (The GTX is close to 90% of the price of a 5970 here) in Australia I pretty much gave up on picking a couple up. I've sold my 295 for a decent amount, I'll use my 5970 until Nvidia have a chance to get the card running cooler, and on less power. :)

Well tessellation will become a standard in games thats the point, Whats the point in owning a Dx 11 card when you cant run all the features descently thats the main reason anyone would buy a Dx 11 card not just to run Dx 9/10 game when the $100 cards do the job.

I'm paying the "You're buying in Australia" tax, but when the GTX 480 is only $120 cheaper than the cheapest HD5970 my mind was made up. In the end I purchased the XFX HD5970 Black Edition. For now I feel like my computer is done. :)

Intel has actually cancelled Larrabee....at least for the public. There might still be some academic use for it.

I have found something quite interesting.

The last benchmark is minimum framerate. It is clear from these 2 that the GTX series is just better at minimum frames than the ATI cards. Not a huge win in warhead average but the difference is going to be very noticible with the minimum framerate. And then the ATI cards pull of their biggest victory in BC2 but it loses out handsomly in minimum FPS. Anandtech said that they were getting consistent results in the benches they posted so I wonder why nobody has been giving attention to this...

It is loud as $#!T.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVEhyfbeDSg

I just hope they can fix the issues with the memory controller, transistor leakage, maybe iron out some minor flaws and improve power efficiency? 'Cause in its current state I'm not getting it, not that I could since I doubt there will be enough for sale.

I'm just going to wait this round out. Too many things are messed up at the moment and from the looks of it they won't cause too much change in the current GPU pricing either.

Scales like a beast in SLI. Too bad one would need an own personal nuclear reactor to run even a single card.

Sorry NVIDIA, as much as i wanted to buy your cards for folding@home the price/performance is just too off....also the heat/power usage is a factor for me now. Just bought an ATI 5850 and its arriving tomorrow :)

According to stanford university's F@H blog they are making a OpenMM client to make ATI 5 series cards fold well

....woot!

Oh, please. Did you ever hear an ultrasound of a fetus's heartbeat? It sounds like Godzilla's coming. Stick a microphone right up inside anything and turn it to max.

[QUOTE="damstr"]

[QUOTE="04dcarraher"] Well its a waste if you plan on using it for only dx 9/10 and where with dx 11 and all the features including high/full tessselation and pay nearly $700 when you can spend $350 For a GTX 470 and get nearly the same performance. 04dcarraher

What other "features" of DX11 are you referring to besides tessellation? Considering the 5970 beat the GTX 480 9 times out of 10 I'm not seeing a reason here....

Well tessellation will become a standard in games thats the point, Whats the point in owning a Dx 11 card when you cant run all the features descently thats the main reason anyone would buy a Dx 11 card not just to run Dx 9/10 game when the $100 cards do the job.

Not in a couple of years at least, if ever (with the consoles holding just about everything back and all..)

You make a good point about the minimum framerates in some apps. The reason I'm not giving it a ton of attention is because it's the difference between sucking, and sucking a little less..

I saw the same thing when the GTX 200 series came out. Seems to me it's just a revised version of the heatsink the 200 series has. No doubt the fan will be variable in speed and most won't hear it until they turn the volume up.

its loud, but remember that the mic is being focused on the card so the noise is being amplified. I understand peoples dissapointment with this card though. As for me, as long as it isnt as loud as my 360 i dont care, and lucky for me it doesnt seem to be.
