I'm geniuinely curious - why are people playing/enjoying this? On a glance it seems like a free-to-play level MMO with nothing interesting or exceptional about it. Am I missing something here?
So far for me personally it's nothing spectacular, but I'm just at the starting levels so it might get better later on. (the starting quests are way too repetitive though)I'm geniuinely curious - why are people playing/enjoying this? For me personally, I have been playing Final Fantasy for almost 2 decades. This game is a throwback to the entire series. I am also a huge alt guy in MMOs and this eliminates the need to ever level another character with the class system, which also creates a better community.I'm geniuinely curious - why are people playing/enjoying this? ... It's there for security reasons, so people can't "brute force" your password.I managed to type the password to log in wrong 3 times and now I'm locked out of my account and can't play for "several minutes"....that was about 10 minutes ago.

Pretty much spot on, FF is one of my favorite franchises except it's been stagnant the past decade or so (only enjoyed FF12 and FF11 since FF9) and I have to say this game is probably the best FF game since FF9 (minus the horrible errors at launch/beta and the constant server lag now).
I'm a alt guy as well and it annoys me when MMO's make you have to re roll another character just to lvl another class, it's annoying and that's why I loved FF11 so much cause of the class system it had which is now in FF14 ARR.

Depends what you're aiming for, pve or pvp. Pve wise ARR will probably be the best MMO out for it, while pvp will be added it won't be a major focus from SE.

You can change class whenever you want, by equipping different weapons (and souls). Though, you will get a 50% exp bonus on your other classes that are lower than your main class's level.

First off you can start with any class (Archer, Gladiator, Lancer, Marauder, Conjurer, Arcanist and Thaumaturge). Then at lvl 10 you get a quest from your starting class quest giver that gives you the ability to switch classes in a few lvls (you can't switch other classes that are in a different area/city tell lvl 15 when you get a airpass). Then at lvl 30 after you complete your class quest you get a Job quest from the same archetype, example Gladiators will unlock the Paladin quest once they've lvl 30 GLD and a 15 Conj.

Not a fan of:
The art direction...some very cheesy stuff in this game
The strange voices and sounds from players and NPCs...more cheesy stuff
The map - Just terrible imo
Slow combat
Instanced zones
For a while I thought I might turn into a FF fan but it's not going to happen. :(
I'm not saying it's a bad game, it's just not for me.
you havent had anything good to say about it since you started playing. im not sure why you even bothered in the first place.... plus, what lvl did you make it to? like 10? last time i saw anything from you, you were lvl 8. it takes maybe 4 hours of play time to get to 15.... leading me to believe you havent spent any time with the game at all. This game is not holding my attention.

I'm only 18 atm.
And that's not true, I did say I was enjoying it. And I was...I just wish it was more my type of game and that I would have kept wanting to play it.
I spent a lot of time playing different classes to get a feel for it.
I think the biggest thing is the setting, not being a FF fan I mean. If I had been a FF fan I think I would have liked it a lot because it's a decent game.
I think it has some great potential and I might pick it up and play here and there.
Art Style - I'm confused... elaborate? i mean not liking overall art is understandable but cheesey stuff? Strange voices - I'm finding it very hard after the "Japanese" comments original not to peg this on "not liking anything that isn't western." Map - agreed.... but its fine after a few hours.... literally don't bat an eye lid at it anymore. hardly a long term problem. slow combat - ok, but its is hard and as evolving later than any other. that 1 sec more global cooldown means nothing in the long run. Instanced zones - dont get it... most MMO's except WoW now do it, effects gameplay in no way whatsoever. never understood this "I LIKE WALKING/SWIMMING ON NO BORDERS FOR NO REASON" leaves the illusion of a bigger world to me personally.... instead of little island world of warcraft where what you see... is sadly what you get. You can't turn into a FF fan just for playing an MMO of a franchise ongoing for 20+ years.... not quite the definition. Out of curiousity you asked "Whats in this long term for a guy like me" You kind of need to elaborate on what that is. what are you comparing it to? what mmo's have you liked? This game is not holding my attention.

I mean the art on some of the armor looks really cheesy to me. Sorry it just does. I hate the way my character looks most the time because of it.
Yes strange voices...from the little race I believe. I don't know...like in the city areas.
And the "Japanese" comment was in no way a dig at anyone, it's just a different feel as far an art direction and stuff like that. Maybe it is because I have played mostly games from the west, I don't know but it is what it is.
And what I was asking when I said "Whats in this long term for a guy like me" is if I'm not a big ff fan is it possible to enjoy the endgame content anyway. I guess I asked wrong but that's what I was getting at.
I have played and liked EQ, EQ2, WoW, Rift, SWTOR, DAOC, Warhammer was ok, LOTRO.

The only problem I think with what you have done is simple. the first 30 odd levels are very easy.... intentionally. the classes/jobs start to come into their own after that, and so do the dungeon's difficulty.
if you want an example of why the global cooldown won't mean much by the end here is a SPOILER Hard Mode Fight for a certain primal:

I mean damn I breeze through most mmo's but I cant even do that fight yet. I'm stuck on the one before.
Brilliant art, brilliant music, the ammount of stuff going on is more than enough. the U.I of the game aswell, since its done with flash not xml like the bog standard every other MMO means they can pull off the flashy stuff they do aswell.

the game is sort of hard to get in to until 30.... once you get there, the dungeons get significantly more difficult, the story missions get significantly more difficult, and there are just a wider range of options for your character. it may take a bit to get to 30, but if you get there and still dont like it, then yeah the game isnt for you.considering the wealth of things to do, and the options given to your character in terms of classes, this is easily the most well rounded MMO to release in a long time.... im going to say that MMOs just arent your thing and you should avoid them in the future.

MMOs are my thing....it's almost all I play. That said it's not that there is nothing to do or that the gameplay is not good. I think it's just the FF part that's difficult for me to enjoy.
I love the idea of not having to lvl a new character for every class and I like a lot of the things they have done for questing. So it's not that MMOs are not for me...I think it's just this games IP/whatever you want to call it, that does not grab me.

this is the majority of the AF armor in the game (missing summoner):[QUOTE="BSC14"]you can get it at 45 (all but chest)..... but really, you spend a few weeks leveling and MONTHS in endgame, so isnt endgame gear the only gear that really matters?I like all of those but the Monk.

So, I assume there is no appearance slot/wardrobe/ect so you can keep the looks of an armor you like.
As long as the endgame armor doesnt try too hard, this wont bother me too much.
Edit: And this is what I am talking about. Overdesigned armor that is trying waaaaay too hard.
BSC14 has a bit of a point and he's allowed to have his opinion. The PVE levelling so far for me is pretty bland and boring. Fair enough I've just started playing but the starting areas aren't nothing out of the ordinary. I'm a sucker for an explorable world and story telling, and RR misses the point a bit at the start. People say it gets better but a game should also try to suck you in straight away.FelipeInside
Honestly, if it was up to me, they should either HEAVILY alter the level experience or just get rid of it all together, ideally the first option. Make it actually feel like it exists for a reason other than to say... we have levelling.

I don't think they are the same. GW2 has fetch quests as well but they do a marvellous job of "disguising them" and making them more fun. To me RR just makes them a bit too repetitive in the fetch area, with the story in them very basic and same as the last one you did. GW2 also has exploration, vistas, skill etc combined with the quests so it's a very nice journey. Lore wise depends on what you like or not, both have interesting lores and races. FF these days is a mess which is natural with so many sequels.[QUOTE="Maroxad"][QUOTE="FelipeInside"]BSC14 has a bit of a point and he's allowed to have his opinion. GW2 made leveling feel more pointless than any other MMORPG I have played.
The story in FF14 is much better than what is in GW2 especially the end of FF14.
FF14 uses the lower lvls to train people so once the really challenging stuff comes through in later lvls then people are ready to face it.
It is one of the few mmos that I have played that is actually difficult in a good way.
It isn't like most other MMORPGs where you just get the best gear in the game and you are fine.
In this MMORPG it requires careful planning especially for end game bosses.

In this MMORPG it requires careful planning especially for end game bosses.
Depends what you consider pointless in the levelling section.[QUOTE="Maroxad"][QUOTE="Geminon"] you can get it at 45 (all but chest)..... but really, you spend a few weeks leveling and MONTHS in endgame, so isnt endgame gear the only gear that really matters?Geminon
FF online has always gone for a realistic look for its armor. the majority of armor designs look like armor that would actually work. i think you will be safe from massive shoulder pads and glowing armor.I don't know, my paladin pretty much wore bathing suits until lvl 15.
WoW is different, it wants to be over the top that way.
