Its definitely a solid game. The fewer FFs you've played in the past the better since you'll be going into this with minimal expectations.@Ultimsamune, thanks for the advice. well, i really don't mind the linearity and less free roam. as long as it's a solid game.

I just unlocked the ability to level up all roles for every character.. but what the hell! like every ability, HP upgrade, health and magic boost costs 4000CP!!! do enemies start giving alot more CP after chapter 10?
I've been playing for less than an hour now and I'm already in love with the battle system.
Oh, and my pre-conceived notion of Snow being a tool has all gone to naught when I just realized he fights WITH HIS FISTS! I love people that punch the crap out of people!
wait till you mean Hopeless... i mean er... Hope. or as i also call him "the boy"... here's a cool video on how to quickly bring down an Adamantoise.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIqQwhBrJrQI've been playing for less than an hour now and I'm already in love with the battle system.

if you love the battle system now, just wait till your 3 or 4 hours in and it really opens up... it might be too soon to call but i'm saying this is the most refined battle system in an FF game yet...I've been playing for less than an hour now and I'm already in love with the battle system.

No, its not too soon. From someone who actually hated the battlesystem at first: This is the most well refined, fun, and intuitive battle system in a JRPG to date. You guys can quote me on that, too. The lack of control that you feel at first soon fades when you get more paradigms at your disposal and get to a point in the game where you actually have to strategically switch back and forth to win a battle. You may only directly choose commands for the leader but, through the paradigm system, you're actually controlling your entire group just all at once. This makes it more fun, too, because without having to think out every single command the system allows for a much faster pace. Two people battles are fun. Three people.... Chaotic hell bliss!!!! :P[QUOTE="yokofox33"]if you love the battle system now, just wait till your 3 or 4 hours in and it really opens up... it might be too soon to call but i'm saying this is the most refined battle system in an FF game yet... You'll know that you're near it when you reach the fork in the road in the early part of Chapter 10 where both ways in the fork must be taken on by jumping. The left jump path will get you to the rest of the level, and the right jump path will lead you to a series of jumps leading to a mini-tunnel with 10 of those slug things guarding a treasure sphere. Farming these guys is easy since they respawn in just a few jumps back down, and they give you good stuff long as you get a preemptive strike (easy to do with them) and you set up COM/COM/RAV and have Lightning spam Blitz.I've been playing for less than an hour now and I'm already in love with the battle system.

so has no one here done 100k damage? im on chapter 9 and think the highest i have done is maybe 5-6k :-s
is anyone upgrading there accessories much or concentrating on there weapons?
a tip that i THINK works well for upgrading is as follows.
because when ever you upgrade to the next level your EXP bonus drops a level, get it up to the max of 200% bonus then save loads of 1 kind of high earning xp material then use it all at once, saves having to use more of the cheap crap stuff to bring the bonus higher again
when using crystarium are you focusing on one role until you max the level? or are you alternating between? and are you upgrading the weapons more than accesory's?... i only upgrade the weapons and accesorys with the group im currently playing, and when i switch groups i uprgade that grouppasson13
I'm in chapter 8 and haven't upgraded a single weapon or accessory yet. But I still don't have problem in getting 5 stars in most battles. I'm just waiting for some better weapons in order to start upgrading. I don't know if that's the way to go in this game though. Maybe there are no better weapons, you just have to make them yourself. Dunno. I'll get to chapter 11 first and then I'm gonna figure it out.
As for the crystarium, I try upgrading all the roles that are available for each character in the beginning of the game. I change paradigms a lot during fights and I wanna have all the possible abilities (offensive, defensive, buffs, debuffs, heals). When I find the chance to grind a bit and gather some more CP, I go for it.
*EDIT* Also I just realized I'm the 666th post in this thread.:?
OK Guys i made a topic a few days ago regarding lack of vibration with FFXIII ... the responce was that most of you did'nt notice ... well i can tell you that i have no vibration at all .. yes i have vibration on via xmb and there aint an option in game to turn it on/off .... this really sucks. this is a post i came across before the game was released.....
No vibration on ps3 for ff13
So what do you think .... are you 100% sure you have vibration?

I've completed the story, and my main party of Lightning, Fang, and Hope have all reached top role level in Ravager, Commando, and Medic respectively. Fang periodically hits for 99,999 damage, but you need the Genji Glove accessory to break that damage cap. That achievement will be so easy once you have the glove.
And an awesome tip for upgrading: Use 36 Sturdy Bones (80 Gil each) to instantly rack up its bonus to x3, then use the high EXP items to make upgrading as fast, cheap, and retardedly simple as possible. Lightning, Hope, and Fang are all sporting they're pre-ultimates, offering around +500 to STR/MAG. I'll be grinding Trapezehedrons from Adamantortoises soon so they can have their ultimates.
Does any one no how to get a chocobo. Need help. I found where they are at but i cant ride one.
anotherhaloguy1
You need to complete Mission 14, I believe it is, and you get the Gysahl Reins as a reward. This allows you to ride any chocobo that are in set locations around Gran Pulse. However, you have to do another Mission first (I forget which, not at home atm) which opens the way. Your best bet is to start at Mission 1 and continue to 14, it'll only take you a few hours if you're at least Role Level 4 with your main party.

It has vibration just in very unusual places. During a battle instead of gettig a rumble upon striking an enemy or taking a hit the only time it vibrates is when you stagger an enemy. I haven't actually noticed it anywhere else, though. I think this game could have been much more immersive with a good rumble in key places, but over all I'm not really noticing the lack of it. I only notice the oddness of its stagger-exclusive functions during battle.
So it's beneficial to spread your crystarium upgrades all over in the beginning? I think I want to focus on 2 roles for each member right now and worry about maximizing other stuff later. I know I want a basic setup of Commando, Sentinel (that's the tank right?), and Medic. I'm already loving the early formation of Lightning, Snow, and Vanille.

You only get like 3 roles for each character in the beginning, anyway. So I don't find it too hard to maximize their stats for all their roles. I'm still in chapter 8 though and I really hate the fact that they won't let you upgrade their stats a lot ,unless you change chapter. I know it was like that in FFX too (with the sphere grind and the level keys), but I get the feeling it's even worse in FFXIII because I always have plenty of spare CP to use. (I'm used to grinding, like in old school RPGs).
okay so im at the start of chapter 8 and have not upped any weapon yet. i was wondering if i should begin upgrading my axis blade or if i should just wait till i aquire the lion heart as i have heard that weapon is very good (because it causes random stagger). thanks for advance for any advice.
edit: also which is better to upgrade for hope the hawkeye or vidonfir? and also would the taming pole be the best weapon for fang as a commando?
If you do some minor grinding you can keep all their roles maxed out with ease. I'm towards the middle of chapter 8 right now and have everyone's roles maxed out with CP to spare. Also, I have to mention this because it was a pleasent suprise: Nautilus Park music = Gold Saucer Chocobo Race music. So it's beneficial to spread your crystarium upgrades all over in the beginning? Just finish ff13......My god what a trip. And No I did not play the 360 version, played it on a friends PS3. Did want to buy it myself in fear of being disappointed..... And I was right. And no, I am not going to compare ff13 to other FF, the whole background themeof FF13 is based on braking down what was built by the past FF. The problem is that the game barely lets you play it. The game design is just throwing the player a mountain of story to guide through, then after that give you a place to play the game fully and then throw you back into the story to end the game but giving you a chance to go back to that open area the play alittle more because it feel bad for how much you had to sit through the story.
I understand that SE did this was to tell a compelling story but the problem is simply the that the story is not that compelling at all. The Plot is mess and all the characters outside of Sazh and Fang are not fully developed. Vanilla is the most overKawaiicharacter I have ever seensince Blue Dragon. The way she walks, talks, fights, and acts is built around Kawii and it makes her inhuman. Even with the full understanding of her characters meaning and full development she still is too annoying. Fortunately, her better half ,Fang, balances her out.(And yes it is what it sounds like.) I would have said that Fang was not fully developed until the game turned her into Prometheus.(If you finished the game and understand Greek myth's you'll understand what I'm talking about.)
Snow, as a character, I hate but I like his meaning. He's pure idealism vs reality. He say something Like "I protect everyone." in the beginning of the game but gets everyone but himself and a friend killed. He constantly being slapped in the face with reality. The problem is he's way too Idealistic with no realistic human characteristic. He's too shounen. Hope's character is about having hope through despair and not losing hope and his character growth starts great and is very good until it fizzles out and he ends up just preaching his character meaning over and over again and stops developing.
Lighting is just too stiff. For someone who lost hope, confused and in suicidal despair at the beginning of the game she's too calm. Her personality, when It comes out is sarcastic, bitter, realilistic, daring ,cool headed. The problem is that they tried to make her too much like Cloud whose arrogant, boast full, and cool headed. The two personalities don't mix and force a character to be based on another that has different character traits distracts from the character. Out of all the characterin this game only the black guy in the green suit with a bird in his frow is well developed.
Also, the story is too rushed, baffling, compressed and confusing. It feels like it was a longer story that was cut up to make shorter that was compressed then cut up again. They retard character development, cut out character development, and made the plot over confusing with the fal'cie/I'cie mess. And I do understand what they are and they were called "Crystals" and "Crystal bearers". It would of been much easier to understand the plot if they just used that. Another problem is that they compressed all the story and character development at the beginning of the game before your givin full freedom with made the story feel rushed.
The problem is the they started the game on cocoon, this problem would not happen if it stated on pulse with have people purged to a base on pulse through a portal, then gave the player full control over the gameplay allowing them to go to town and dungeons on pulse, then bring the character to cocoon and then back to pulse then end the game on cocoon and pulse. They would spread out the story instead of compressing it at the beginning. Or like in FF6 or Suikoden 3 allow the play to choose which part of the story they want to play through first. This is a medium that you can take your time to play through, why rush the story? Instead they force all the development at the first third of the game and then have all the character preach what they learned at the first third of the game for the rest of the game.
Now with all these problem .....I still agree with the score this site gave it. Underneath all the problem their is a great game. The combat is great. Though not new or deep, other Rpgs do combat better like ToV(Which ironically does story better, too.) The Combat is just Xenogear/Saga mix with a faster active time battle But the combat alone carries the game anyway.
FF13 is still a great game but its design is flawed to a pointwhich nearly brakes the game. With odd characters and off story development, it make you wonder why SE made the game so linear to focus on the story which is so badly managed story. The Plot is off but the idea of the story is still good. If it wasfine tune a bit more it would have been a great story. You can easily say the gameplay carries the game, which it did, but their other jrpgs out their that do a better job in that area like ToV, which also did a better job with story than FF13, Star Ocean 4 ,and End of Eternity. This game really is a resting of the brand, especially with it taking old ff standers and reversing it. It should not have been numbered. As for the game its self, It feels like they took 4-5 years just making the game a pretty as possible.
One last thing, this game officially knocks FF6 off it thrown of best music in series. The music in FF13 is ten times better than everything in the series.

Some insightful analyses here. :)
I agree with you that Sazh is the most engaging and well developed character.
I, too, heard that SE tried to model Lightning's character off of Cloud's, or I guess Zack's, technically, since it's his behavior that the Jenova cells are mimicking in the first half of the game. I digress. This was definitely a bad move, as Cloud is such a complex character. It is impossible to simply extract a few of his traits and imprint them on Lightning without the support of all the others.
And yes, the music is incredible! It's right up there with Uematsu's scores for VII, VIII and IX.

What boggles my mind is how different Zack in Crisis core is so different from cloud in ff7 .So is the story good or not. I just want to know, it doesnt need to be perfect,as long as the combat satisfies my cravings Ill play it. I am almost at chapter 8 so yea...
The default ones they give you at the beginning are good guidelines in what they'll be best at in the future. Commando, Sentinel, and Medic is a pretty safe choice. However, you might want to not set your decision in stone about that formation, because once the game opens up, you'll find that Lightning/Hope/Fang works the best thanks to their range of options they have on the Crystarium. This leaves the other three to be available as Super-Specialists to tackle the more expensive crystals later on. Your formation is fine still. Lightning makes for a great Commando and Ravager, Snow makes for a great Commando and Sentinel, and Vanille makes for a great Medic and Ravager. The only problem here is that you'll miss out on some good buffing abilities at the beginning of the game which Hope and Sazh can provide.

The story is doable. I just got to the end of chapter ten where it finally takes a serious turn. The events leading up to that point have been so random and unrelated, but at the end of ten it seems to come together with finally a single goal for the whole team. Before now everyone but Sahz seemed a bit mellow dramatic to me. Needless to say its still entertaining as hell otherwise I wouldn't have just hit the 30hr mark. ;)So is the story good or not. lol how much are you playing? you have just overtaken me! im taking a half day of work today so i can play more though :-D
You mean me? I literally stopped sleeping at night. :( I get maybe 2-3 hours of sleep now. This should be a testament to how addictive the game can be despite what flaws I've mentioned. If there's one Final Fantasy tradition that this game stays true to its that it has that undeniable magic that keeps you coming back without question. FF = Magic, so XIII = FF. Oh, I said it!!! :Plol how much are you playing? you have just overtaken me! im taking a half day of work today so i can play more though :-D

Lol hey Guys!, just wondering , is weapons/accessory really important in this game? I'm currently in chapter11 and just farming Crys points. I mean I upgrade my weapons and all, but is there such thing as Ultima weapon here? :P. Thanks! And the story is great so far, I love all of the characters, yes even Vanille :D
I can't express how much I'm loving this Paradigm system. I love having different roles for each member, and being able to change them on the fly adds an extreme amount of strategy and tactical approach to the game. So damn awesome. Can't wait till things REALLY open up. Only complaint so far is that you have to wait for your Crystarium to open at times. I can see why they only allowed you to go so far though as things might really be too easy if you just level up insanely at the beginning.

Not the job system, or even the leveling up...just that you can't level up like a mad man and walk through the rest of the game.

I wouldn't really consider a temporary level cap an evolution.Grinding levelslike a mad man has always been part of the fun for some people, but it was also a bit of a challenge in its self since it took forever to level up to a degree where you could actually walkthrough just a little bit of the game before having to grind some more.
I'm totally cool with thecrystarium caps.I've had enough CP left over from occasional grinding that everytime it opens up I can max itback out right then and walk through the rest of the chapter with ease. Not really agreeing or disagreeing with you, but I think the option to walk through the game like a thug is still there (well, up to Chapter 11 where I just got to, that is).
