[QUOTE="Roland123_basic"][QUOTE="juden41"]What do you guys think of Vanille so far? I think she's one of those "love her or hate her" type of characters. I love her, I think she's hilarious, just comically odd.Jesus_on_fire

so far she hasnt managed to annoy me.... she is just an odd person. i LOVE her new voice actor though... she had a different voice actor ages ago in one of the promo vids for the game. TERRIBLY high pitched and just stupid (the voice actor has done other chars and i have hated those as well). the new voice actor with the New Zealand accent fits the character much better.

Erm its actually an australian accent.

erm... no... it isnt at all. it is a new zealand accent. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ePwKYJcEOo for reference....

I said what I had to say. You can rationalize it all you want. The game is for kids. It's shallow, simple to a fault and more linear than any FF game ever made. I'm sure there are many kids with no gaming standards that like it, simply because they don't know any better, but that doesn't make it a good game. Defend it if you feel you must, but my opinion is based on expirience, not heresay and is therefore not swayed by empty talk. Unfortunately, 90% of people here weren't even planned for when the FF series began, hence discussing a game series most never even played is pointless. So I'm not gonna waste my time. Enjoy your game. You deserve it, just the way it is. ;)

Rayn303
you havent played more than 2-5 hours have you? mystery solved. game becomes MUCH less linear after just a few hours.... infact, i would go so far as to say it is almost exactly the same as FFX in linearity after a few hours.

There are plenty of long time FF fans who appreciate FFXIII. I love it.

Also, the voice actress for Vanille is Australian.

The juvenile element of the game is present for children as well as the intelligent adult who can appreciate it. Many children who play this game won't know there is a juvenile element present, and to the adult it's not a deficiency that's been noted, a dumb-ed down element of game play and story. No, it's the ability to appreciate the innocence of the characters ,and their mature, and very much so adult struggles. At the worse it draws connection to progression back into child hood innocence, so that the adult mind can find escape and coherence. It establishes realism given this effect, because the adult mind goes searching into these lively juvenile characters and finds common ground immediately and falls victim immediately as well to their innocence. As they are a adult with experiences and the lesser of innocents. This engages the player to play the game through, there's an impending danger that every adult is aware of, as for every child it's common place that their is a danger, even possibly one beyond their comprehension...This is blatantly the trigger for engagement, a sense of action and danger, a fun and action fighting game for kids, a sense of being lost and grasping for psychological coherence and adults may or may not see something deeper depending on their comprehensional skills. A adult logically has more psychological coherence than a child, which makes the very same action adventure fighting game into something much greater in their perception Still, the juvenile element is stronger than ever and appropiate for both the adult and the child. - - - The honest answer is that the game is too emotional and sensitive for him so he's attacking it. The actual content of this game is fairly mature and sensitive and intelligent, even though it often strikes a cord as juvenile or innocent. It takes a adult's perception to appreciate it the best and a fully developed conscience and intelligent individual, not merely just a child per chance.

Already posted this in the xbox forum bu I think people are giving this game way to hard of a time. I'm hardcore into the FF series and i think this is the first one in years that's gripped me. Everyone made a big deal about XII but i couldn't get into it and just wasted 10 hours trying.

Anyway, if you like it, go vote on this http://www.tallyup.com/poll-answer/Are-you-disappointed-with-Final-Fantasy-XIII-209.html so we can spread the word that it's an amazing game.

So you don't have a substantive argument beyond extreme hyperbole, video game elitism, and ad hominem attacks. Well ok then. It's pretty sad that if you are as old as I assume you may be, (around my age of 29 or so) that you can't discuss differing opinions without resorting to those kind of immature hit and run tactics. In other words, act your age, please. People not being with the series from day one, or not having been part of the original target audience, (an audience I am a member of, hi) doesn't make their input on the current products any less valid. Your attempts to undermine their credibility to have an opinion at all, and attack them personally rather try to discuss things civilly, speaks volumes about what kind of person you are. None of it good.

so what chapter is everybody at in this game?

i'm on chapter 11, on the final boss of this chapter, he's extremely difficult and has more than 3 million hit points, and if i take too long in the battle, he casts Doom on me which sucks, after all the work i did to try to damage the boss

well then she is doing a damn fine impersonation of a Kiwi accent... because i have a friend from australia and a friend from new zealand that i met in college... and Vanille definitely sounds like a Kiwi, and not at ALL like an australian.

I agree. I'm very much like Yahtzee and Jim Sterling on this subject. Developers should ignore fans. Fans are chains that hold games back by forcing them to adhere to rigid formula. Make the game you want to make to fit your vision, and just go with it. All this talk of this not being a "true" Final Fantasy is without any merit at all. If SE says this is a Final Fantasy game, that's what it is. No amount of stubborn denial will change that. To those who don't like the changes you have a simple option here, cash in your chips and leave the Final Fantasy table. Because it's obvious the series has simply left some of you behind. Final Fantasy is a big name in a shrinking increasingly niche genre.

Changes to broaden it's appeal beyond the "fans" are an absolute must. The chains have been broken, and I doubt SE will willingly be chained down again. You stay classy, Squeenix.

Roland123_basic

Good lordy you people just don't get it. Sure its Final Fantasy in the literal sense. How could anyone deny that?? Its just not FF to some of us who were used to it the way it was, liked it that way, and expected it to stay that way. Final Fantasy has changed. Oh well. All good things come to an end. I'm enjoying the game, but I can easily tell you its not my favorite. So far its sitting at about 4th place, though, so thats not too bad. Square Enix isn't listening to fans anymore, so don't worry about that. They, like everyone else, are trying to reach a much broader market and know that most people don't like JRPGs. So, guess what... They didn't make one.

and for those of you that are like that, you are ignorant and stuck in the past. SE wanted the game this way.... it is a final fantasy. and... FF13 does NOT reach a broader audience than past games. it is MUCH more difficult than past FF games.... and considering how insane some of the endgame bosses are, i would say it approaches the title of most difficult in the series. Difficult games =/= broad appeal, sorry.

Actually, dude, anyone who cannot just respect an opinion and let it be and is completely insistant on being argumentive over everything is IGNORANT. I have my opinion. I'm not forcing it on anyone. You on the other hand seem to think you are completely right and that everyone should feel the same way that you do. Well, that's not how it is, buddy. Don't get mad cause I feel the way I do. Call me ignorant all you want, but you're the one who refuses to accept a simple opinion. Please, stop being so offensive in your responsives. If you can't say anything nice.... STFU! :P

Also, a game's appeal has very little to do with its difficulty. I'm not talking about age, either. There are difficult games spanning all genres. Its the action that offers a broader appeal. Action game vs JRPG? Duh, action game will sell more everytime!

I got a free special item certificate with my copy of Final Fantasy XIII. I tried registering a account at square members but I have not gotten a reply to my activation. I'm on a Mac and I know Macs are screwy with yahoo mail... Does anyone know about the special item? It's a product Registration Card. Unfortunately I haven't had much luck with it yet.

FFXIII isn't an action game. Not even close. It's just the full realization of the ATB - a command system that emphasizes speed and strategy. Now it emphasizes speed and strategy more than ever.

I'm really getting sick of all of this Final Fantasy XIII debating that's going on... and I'm a man who usually loves debates.

If you enjoy the game, then shut up and enjoy the game.

If you dislike the changes, then shut up and dislike the changes.

Steve just said in an earlier post that developers should stop listening to fans. I partially agree, but above all else, fans should stop listening to other fans. With the internet and all, consumers try to force their opinions on others way to much. There's expressing opinion, and then there's arguing about why you're point of view is superior to everyone else.

That's not a debate; that's just picking a fight.

Believe it or not, I agree. I only ever tried to state an opinion. Unfortunately my opinion is not welcome. People want to pick a fight and be rude with me for having the opinion I have, well..... I feel a need to defend my self or those who may feel the same. When someone attacks others without caring where they are truelly coming from.... I don't take kindly to that sort of thing. I wish we could all just say what we have to say without harshly misunderstanding one another and being completely inconsiderate towards eachother for having an opinion that differs from our own. I'm going to do some yoga or something....

I agree with this view point ,but see where the other guy is coming from because both of you are doing some of the same behaviors to one another as the other one is. It's a brutal cycle. You're right though, if you accept everyone for who they are, you'll have a easier time accepting your own opinions and accepting yourself for who you are. Only insecure people need to put others down to feel good about their own opinions, which is why it's more mature to try to give your opposition balanced and level headed. If you come off too strong, you're arrogant/ igornant. It's far more effective in life when becoming a individual, with self respect, real confidence to listen to the view points of others with respect and attention to detail, than it is to be oblivious, and ignore/ deny yourself the integral experience of life. (Just a hive, like bees). - - I do admit that some people are very offensive when giving their opinions though. They are simply not thoughtful of others who may have a opposing view point. Their learning curve is probably limited too... but let's not assume.

Haha. Well put. I was only being aggressive towards him for attacking me in the first place. Man, I hate when someone who doesn't even know me calls me ignorant. Lol. But you're very right. I'm just dropping it. I have my opinion on the game. Its a touchy subject for some, though, and its hard to get a point across without being misunderstood. Someone sees some negative feedback for something they enjoy and they blindly attack without really getting to the bottom of things. My thoughts and opinions go much deeper than type allows me to express, so I can't really do much to alieviate that problem from here unless I just stop responding all together. Thanks for the input. I'm going to put it to use now.

That boss is hard, I assume it's at the end of chapter 3. Start out in "Relentless Assault" mode, then when the health bar of one character gets below halfway, Paradigm shift, once everyone is healed up or near healed up, switch back to relentless assault paradigm. Just keep repeating this, use a potion too if you need to, you should have about 20. When you get him staggered enough, your hits do more damage. Just keep doing this and don't die, heal earlier if you need to, and it should be fine.

There's always a way around in Final Fantasy, if you're really good. Have you tried casting protect, shell, reflect, on your team mates yet? Don't spoil anything for me, I'm not where you're at yet. I just feel that maybe you should try going into battle with haste and with protect/ shell or reflect on. Also I'd upgrade your armor as much as possible if you haven't already. if you can cast slowage or whatever you got on the boss. I'd definitely have haste on and protect/ shell. Another tactic is that as soon as the battle starts if you can get the first move on the boss you should take out one of your ESPERS so that it takes the brunt of the attack and you can work off that first move to prepare yourself for a long battle.

of course, but when i mean this one attack will KO your teammate or your party leader, i mean it, all the buffs in the world couldnt protect you from this one attack (unless you're lucky enough that the attack fails), i got the boss to 25% HP left (out of like 6 million HP), and then i died, i was so PO'd

I just feel that maybe you should try going into battle with haste and with protect/ shell or reflect on. Also I'd upgrade your armor as much as possible if you haven't already.

of course, but when i mean this one attack will KO your teammate or your party leader, i mean it, all the buffs in the world couldnt protect you from this one attack

LOL, well you're in a bad situation and I'm not questioning your skills, just trying to offer you some tactic. (outside opinion)... Someone who's faced off to the boss might be a better canidate. If you can cast a Esper first so that he takes the blow. He'll die but you'll live on. At any rate this is a game where you can max everything out, right? I doubt they made it impossible to win. I guess I'd just try extreme updates if possible I'd upgrade every weapon and armor I had to the max. Sorry I can't help

its not ur fault, i blame Square Enix for making the final boss do that to ya, after all the work you put into trying to defeat it, i'll try it again tomorrow (when i get a chance to cool it off)

wouldnt you be if you were in a boss fight for that long, then suddenly just died (with all your HP still intact)?

Yes, I've been in some pretty long boss battles though. This sounds like a real FF game after all.

This game is amazing! It feels so good that I waited all this time for it and it's delivered in almost every way that I wanted it to :) Props to Square Enix.

I've been reading some reveiws on FFXIII and many says it was very linear. Can someone explain to me how so compared to the other ones (never played another)? Is there alot of side quest and things to do like oblivion?

You deserve it, just the way it is. ;)

i'm at the final boss of this entire game, and it does this one attack that instantly KO's my teammates, i did forget to pick up a certain accessory in the final area, so am i just screwed to the point i wont beat the game (otherwise i could try to use Sentinel to try to lure the attacks to my teammate and kill him/her instead)

You don't have previous saves? Why would you use one save file?

Why would you need more than one :?

you should always atleast have 2 save files for any one game, an auto, and a manual, for good measure, so you can go back and redo things if you messed up. i like to call it the Doc Brown method

Well, guys, despite all my groaning about it not living up to my expectations I'm enjoying the hell out of this game. It really is amazing. Sure, it lacks a lot of what I loved about the series, but now I realize the series can live without that stuff. I still would like more exploration and a freakin' world map and not feel like I'm trapped in a dungeon the entire game, but for some strange reason its pretty fun this way. I'm actually coming around to the battle system, too. I like the old menus, but I can see why this would be preferable in a lot of ways. If anything its less likely to lose your attention. People with ADD can play a FF game now! :P

Im REALLY enjoying this game, I have been playing FF games since number 7. that out the way i have read what certain people have said and i agree with both sides on various things. 1) its not dumbed down, the biggest change is the fact its SO linear-the fact you cant wonder around towns hardly means its for kids. 2)I wish it wasnt so linear! even just a few towns to wonder around every now and again would make such a big difference. 3) who ever has said the battles are easy need to play for longer, im finding it is the same difficulty as other FF games, the battles are alot faster and more fun this time round though! from the paradigm system to the chain/stagger system gives the battles a few different levels to keep you on your toes during the tougher fights. my biggest gripe is the linearity of the game but i am hooked on the game make no mistake about it, if they want the series to change in this direction MAYBE next time they will compromise betwen what old fans want and what they want to change.... who can honestly say having a bit of freedom (like a few towns) would put of new fans?

That's pretty much how I'm feeling about it now in a nutshell, but I still haven't got to a point where the battles are hard. I'm on chapter 4 right now and I've only died once. I've only gotten less than 5 stars about 5 or 6 different times. I'm breezing through it with ease. Does it ever really get harder? And why would they wait so long to challenge you? Anyway, I think a good compromise between this and older FFs would be perfect. Really the linearity of this game is the only thing that really kills it. Well, that and the lack of an ultimate bad@$$ enemy - or is there one of those two that I haven't noticed yet?

People were saying that this game was being watereddown for the masses but as far as the difficulty I think it's been cranked up lil bit. Yesterday I died atleast 3 times because I got cocky and tried to be aggressive at the end of fights that were not even boss battles or I didnt switch paradigms in time.

I have no idea why people keep talking about towns and freedom... I mean this amazing story leaves no place to "wandering in towns" and "freedom". There's nnever been any freedom in any FF game except go to place A or B first (which makes no difference). If you could do that, it would absolutely be a weakness of the game. It would take us away from the story and wouldn't make any sense at all. I fail to see what big difference it would make if you could go to a town. I'd MUCH rather be in one of the environments of the game than in some town doing nothing.

Dude, you must not have played many FF games if you think they never allowed you any freedom. Some of the games let you do pretty much whatever you wanted, but they always managed to keep you on track with the story. Its been done and its been done very well. And for the most parts the towns were a part of the story and you had to talk to townspeople to get clues on where to go next or how to solve a puzzle or they'd offer insight into what's going on helping you figure out more of the mysteries of the world. They told you tales and legends of old that offered a depth to the world and gave it a history. Talking to townspeople and putting things together through what they told you was all a part of the gaming experience and did nothing but ADD to the story and the overall enjoyment. It has forever been a part of what an RPG is. This game doesn't have that, and a lot of people miss it. Now, hopefully you have an idea why people talk about it like they do......

That's not what I said... I said the only freedom you had was go to town A or B, which is clearly not the type of freedom a game with FFXIII's story needs, besides if you played FFX it's basically the same, you go on with your pilgrimage with no freedom whatsoever. Yes, some good parts of the previous games are gone. Why? Because it has nothing to do in FFXIII. Lightning doesn't need to go to a town and ask some hobo where to go, I mean come on...

They told you tales and legends of old that offered a depth to the world and gave it a history. Talking to townspeople and putting things together through what they told you was all a part of the gaming experience and did nothing but ADD to the story and the overall enjoyment. This game DOES have that, it's called the Datalog

TheEldestGod, it warms my heart to see that the game's grown on you. But yeah. I'm on Chapter 9 right now and still loving the holy crap out of it. Trust me, the game only gets better and better. The summons are introduced so epically, and the gameplay mechanics start to flourish and come in one by one in a perfect pace. And man, the story is just beautiful. The cast takes a long-ass time to get assembled, but they do it at a pace where it doesn't feel redundant yet it keeps the audience yearning to get everyone together. Also, Sazh is awesome. Actually, the entire cast is surprisingly compatible with eachother. At first, I disliked pretty much everyone except for Lightning and Sazh, but I warmed up to everybody... even Vanille.

final fantasys have always (well since 7) always had freedom in the sense of a world map, i cant remember 8 and 9 too well (but means i can play 8 again now its on the psn :-D ) 7 you had access to the world map after about 3-4 hours, 10 you had the airship towards the end of the game and 12 was the same in that respect. im 15 hours into this and so far its just walking along the same path, like i said i LOVE this game, honestly i do, the graphics, the battles, the story-even the data log i read everything as soon as i can! towns may only give the illusion of freedom but it still breaks up the gameplay getting to go into a "physical" shop and speak to people and things, the illusion thing is a bit like democracy, the general election is in a couple of months and we have the freedom to vote for who we want, its not going to make a difference though as who ever gets voted in will be a idiot! oh and the battle that i found tough was against this motorised cycle thing in palumpolum, its gatling attack killed me off everytime.
