That's not what I said... I said the only freedom you had was go to town A or B, which is clearly not the type of freedom a game with FFXIII's story needs, besides if you played FFX it's basically the same, you go on with your pilgrimage with no freedom whatsoever. Yes, some good parts of the previous games are gone. Why? Because it has nothing to do in FFXIII. Lightning doesn't need to go to a town and ask some hobo where to go, I mean come on...
They told you tales and legends of old that offered a depth to the world and gave it a history. Talking to townspeople and putting things together through what they told you was all a part of the gaming experience and did nothing but ADD to the story and the overall enjoyment. It has forever been a part of what an RPG is. This game doesn't have that, and a lot of people miss it. Now, hopefully you have an idea why people talk about it like they do......TheEldestGod
This game DOES have that, it's called the Datalog
Yeah, the datalog is a nice feature but, like the shops, its just not as involving. Would you find it more interesting to learn about the civil war from a history book or being given the opportunity to a few people who actually participated? And there's a reason why FFX was not my favorite. [QUOTE="gizmo_dave100"] oh and eldergod i have a question for you, is the one thing that puts you of the most the linearity or are there other things you have big issues with? Really, I had a freakin' shopping list to begin with... But I've definitely warmed up to it. Not even the linearity really bothers me much anymore. Its a game all its own. It really stands out from the series, but I'll admit it does so in a good way. To answer your question, though, the glaring problems for me were this: Its linear with no towns and very little exploration, most of the set pieces I've seen so far offer very little diversity within themselves making them kind of boring to look at after a while (where as most the PSX FFs had something nice and new to look at on almost every screen), character levels are gone, the more involving battle system is gone, and the overall RPG pacing is gone...... Oh, well. I'm over it. ;) ................... Oh, and Sazh is the man![QUOTE="TheEldestGod"]Would you find it more interesting to learn about the civil war from a history book or being given the opportunity to a few people who actually participated? bloodling
Personally, I'd rather learn about it from a well written book...
Somehow I knew you'd say that.... :Pumm...killerband.. what accessory are you talking about? :?nintendo-4life
the Holy Crown (i think that whats its called), its located somewhere in chapter 13, do not go far into chapter 13 without finding this accessory first, or you'll have the same amount of problems i had with the final boss (also try to update that accessory as much as possible, it decreases your chances of getting KO'd automatically)
This game is different, but familiar, most people dont like change, they are scared of it.
Its actually pretty good, on chapter 9 atm, Wow, it really turned up the difficulty, sure its easy at the start and all you really have to do is press X, but all those people who said it was easy, didnt play it for too long because it gets pretty dan unforgiving in battles later on.
The games story is one of the more depressing/sadder tales of the franchise, but does well to hold up on its own and wetting your appetite to learn more and push on.
When I read all the talk about FFXIII's linearity, I was assumed everyone was talking about a linear storyline. Now that I'm actually playing the game, I can see that it is literally linear. Moving through areas is like running down a hallway with no doors. I'm not too far in so I don't know if there's any dungeon type areas, y'know, the kind you get lost in. That's really my only complaint. I really like the battle system. As a general rule, I usually abhor AI controlled parties but this system is done in a way that I actually enjoy it. I think it's the fact that my old buddy, the ATB gauge, is still there.
how is this game considerated a rpg? i have played rpg for almost 20 years now and i can't see at all what make this game a rpg i think this game should have beedn a action or adventure maybe both.I saw other game with more rpg element then this game and wasn't considerated a rpg.Oh well i still love this game though.
I'm about 12 hours in and the battles aren't easy to the point of boredom anymore(If you relax to much you'll die, alas just hit retry and no harm is done(-_-)). However, what I liked most about final fantasy(game play wise) was the ability to grind my self into God. I'm always just strong enough in this game and I don't like it. The pace of the beginning is horrid I don't think I can see myself replaying this one. Overall this game is fun, the music is good, the characters are likable, Vanille is fine if you're into anime(love hina anyone?), the battles are fun, its not too hard. However, this game has one huge flaw... It's just not Final Fantasy. Had this rpg been called anything else (fal'cie chronicles) no one would have a problem with it. But(and a big but) having the name final fantasy, it creates large expectations and this just lacks the soul of the ff game. As I'm wondering down the winding paths fighting seemingly useless fight after fight I feel no real motive to be doing what I'm dong... No real connection and if it wasn't for Sazh's pet chocobo popping up I'd have forgotten its a FF game.jeremiah06"Soul" is a very subjective intangible thing. As a long time FF fan myself, I view this game as a return to form after FF12, which to me lacked that "soul".
Well, guys, despite all my groaning about it not living up to my expectations I'm enjoying the hell out of this game. It really is amazing. Sure, it lacks a lot of what I loved about the series, but now I realize the series can live without that stuff. I still would like more exploration and a freakin' world map and not feel like I'm trapped in a dungeon the entire game, but for some strange reason its pretty fun this way. I'm actually coming around to the battle system, too. I like the old menus, but I can see why this would be preferable in a lot of ways. If anything its less likely to lose your attention. People with ADD can play a FF game now! :P TheEldestGodawwww gee.... after all of that **** he finally changes his tone. i guess i wasnt wrong after all.

How can it be a "return" when everything is cut out? Like I said it's a good game its just not Final Fantasy. I've played and beaten all of them(expect the mmo's). Also I loved FFXII... So, I guess there is the difference. We go from expansive open world to closed tunnels. It feels like the entire game is on "easy mode" They could have at least included a hard mode or a new game plus. I'm enjoying the game for what it is but It just lacks the enthusiasm to move forward(what I mean by soul). In all the other FF's I felt like I had a reason to progress but XIII just feels like I'm just going through the motions like a loveless marriage.[QUOTE="jeremiah06"]I'm about 12 hours in and the battles aren't easy to the point of boredom anymore(If you relax to much you'll die, alas just hit retry and no harm is done(-_-)). Well, personally I felt the urge to keep playing more than ever, especially more than when playing FFXII. FFX is basically the same in terms of "closed tunnels" except for the lightning plains, the desert and the calm lands, which I didn't like because it was way too big and killing so many enemies got boring. By the way, if you close your map you will have a harder time finding treasures but I find it better that way, I pay attention to every detail because of this. I bet a lot of people missed quite a few treasures. Also, I love how you can dodge or do pre-emptive strikes in this game.

Yeah, In FFX its closed tunnels(I was comparing it to XII) but IDK for me I was "in to it" It made me want to progress, to get that next aion, to pass the next trails, to recruit blitz ball layers etc. I like the way the battles was handled it was like the Xenosaga series(I loved those). What I missed the most (which was n FFX) was grinding my way to saiyan levels of strength and breezing through enemies. Well, personally I didn't like the grinding part in other games so I guess it's a matter of preference. I actually find the battles really enjoyable, switching to ravager to increase the stagger bar while coming back to commando if it's going down too fast, getting my atb bar filled right before the enemy is staggered, doing some aoe or support magic when needed, controlling the eidolons. In previous games, small fights were basically a chore for me to do, but I'd gladly do it because of the captivating story.

Yeah, I agree. I like the battles, my complaint was more geared towards the level system. I am one of those power level guys so its really just a personal problem for me.EDT: I also want to point out that the music is really good. I've been humming the boss battle theme to myself since last night. I'm trying to get as much done now before I start playing else I'll lose the whole day(It seems weird I come here to complain yet I can't stop playing the game).

It wasn't illusion. I grinned a lot in other FF's. I was always 9-10 levels higher than I should have been. As far as I can see(only 12 hours in) In FFXIII you can't do that because the levels are capped to certain story sections. By the time I'm allowed to level more I already have enough CP to fully max out again(made me stop grinding).
Start with light rev, hope med. If your HP gets too low go med/med. When odin puts his shield up go rav/rav. repeat. (you can use the faith/bravery/haste etc. item before the battle)Errmm, can anyone help me with Odin, what tactics are best for the fight?

Here is my in depth impressions of Final Fantasy 13. Hope to get some more feedback positive or negative.
awwww gee.... after all of that **** he finally changes his tone. i guess i wasnt wrong after all. Um.... no. There is a trophy to get 5 stars on the final boss? Arrggghhh mann! That will take me ages! lol. Thanks for letting us know tho.
Its starting to get pretty difficult at the moment, so its all good now :)
Also about the people saying about the liniearity and lack of a open world and no npc's/towns, a GDC meeting with the director, he said that he wanted to focus on story and cutscenes, and human drama, THATS why it took so long to be released. He said that if he made it open world, it would need more cutscenes, more time spent, and quality decrease in everything else. FF will always focus on story games first.
FF12, while it was open world, the characters sucked, i felt. Vahn was the main protaginist and he was just along for the ride! The story i felt, was lacking that 'soul' you guys mentioned, the main group wernt really connected to anything and didnt really feel like i was saving the world, this time :( They took a huge chance with the battle system, but it didnt work. While i do like the balance of graphics and open world-ness of FF12, everything else just didnt work for me. Also, setting the story in Ivalice was kind of a downer too, i wanted a whole new area, a whole new story, leave the world of Ivalice to the tactics spin-off.

That's good and all, but most the other games told amazing stories. This one really doesn't have that great of a story IMO. At least, it hasn't really gotten to any good parts yet. The characters are all so very shallow, too. They all have a basic personality role that they've stuck to this whole time. They're as one dimensional as Kratos so far. Hope is the worst. He's a sad pup that misses his mommy and don't know what to do with him self. They should have left his emo butt out. If SEs whole focus was story and characters then they should be pretty disappointed in themselves. Where they really triumphed was the graphics and honestly I'd sacrifice some graphical grace for a bit more to do. I think all the endless running around and fighting ruins the pace of the story far more than swinging in and checking out a nearby town would've. FBIDOG mentioned Lost Odyssey which is an excellent example of a much better balance between story and gameplay. That game had plenty of towns and exploration for the most part and its characters and story were so so sooooo deep!how do i use aegisol before battles? you have to do it before battles right? i cant find out how to use them... HELP!passon13Hit L1 before you engage an enemy. It opens a menu.

Well, I was directed to include this post here, instead of making a new thread (for which I had points deducted....)
Final Fantasy XIII: Perfect Save
What constitutes a perfect save file? This question has been answered many times for many other FF games. All treasures obtained, all abilities unlocked, all side quests and missions completed are obvious criteria. However, these don't need to be mentioned here as they can easily be fulfilled with the use of any thorough online walkthrough.
Fortunately, we don't have to worry about natural stat maxing, since these don't exist. The stat mechanics are very cut and dry. Completing every character's Crystalium system will guarantee the maximum obtainable (unequipped) stats. This means we don't have to worry about another FFVII or FFIX stat maxing ordeal. Whew!
What is most difficult in obtaining an FFXIII perfect save is accumulating the maximum amount of each material. Many materials become available for purchase at various shops as the game progresses. However, there are many, many materials that are dropped by only one or two unique enemies. These enemies, such as the Cie'th in Anima Fal'Cie, are only around for a limited period of time. Therefore, the items they drop can only be collected within this time frame. This means a LOT of item farming! In order to obtain 99 of these materials, their respective enemy droppers will have to be reloaded many times. I hope to compile a list of missable drops that are available only temporarily.
Feel free to contribute to this list!
Also, PLEASE respond with any other information on any missables that are necessary for a perfect file. For example, I've heard that in order to complete the Enemy Intel list in the Datalog, some enemies must be fought multiple times.
I'm on chapter 8... Why do I get the feeling that some people aren't enjoying/ playing the game one day at a time, but rather play it just to rant on about its flaws and come here and post how horrible it is? (SPOILER ALERT SORT OF) === === === (SPOILER ALERT SORT OF...) At any rate by the time I've reached chapter 8 I'm seeing that these characters are round characters and not flat. GalufUndiesI assume you're referring to my post above? I'm only on chapter 6, and I'm just not really getting much out of the story or the characters as of yet. Sazh, to me, is the only one that feels like an authentic human being. I'm not trying to bash the game or ruin it for anyone else. i bought the game and am giving it the chance it deserves. I'm enjoying for the most part, but I really can't help but feel there is something missing. Up to this point it lacks a lot of depth. I hardly feel involved at all with these people which is much different than I'm used to. I'm just giving my day to day updates, here, so i've yet to express my overall opinion of the full experience. I haven't made it that far. Just up to the half way mark it honestly feels like its doing very little to build up for anything mindblowing. I just can't believe they said their whole focus was story and characters and they didn't do any better than this. Thats all.

I can't believe they wouldn't let you have your own thread for this. This will get completely lost in the quagmire ofquestions andopinions in this thread. :P
