So, I know this is the PS3 board, but I was wondering how you dudes felt about some of the Wii RPGs. There are a few that are unique to the system, and I was thinking about checking them out. Ones I'm interested in are Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Tales of Symphonia, Rune Factory, and Arc Rise Fantasia. Any input would be appreciated.MrSelf-Destruct
Arc Rise Fantasia is good, don't listen to the negative reviews. If you like traditional jrpgs and don't mind bad voice acting and grinding then you're in for a treat.

Ok, grabbed a handful of Wii RPGs: Tales of Symphonia (haven't tried it yet but loved Vesperia), Rune Factory - Frontier, Pandora's Tower, and Fragile Dreams. I popped them all in for a few minutes each to see what the atmosphere is like. So far, Fragile Dreams is what's got my attention. It's real dark and moody. I like it. Hopefully I'll have time to actually play these and eventually share my thoughts here. As for WRPGs, Path of Exile on the PC is pretty rad. It's a Diablo style dungeon crawler, but it has an active skill system like FFVII's materia and a passive skill system like FFX's sphere grid. Character building at its finest.

Sweet. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks. From the reviews I've watched, it seems the VO work is the only real drawback, which I'm fine with. So, I'm definitely keeping it on my radar. Got my hands full for now, though. :P

He got money, he just has this strict policy of not paying full price for games. This is one game where he needs to make an exception.

Can you turn off the little voices when they speak?

Yes you can. I do find it a bit annoying that they have a few repeated scripted lines that might sort of go with multiple situations instead of having the sections either fully voiced, or not voiced at all.

Have you played the original Tales of Symphonia on gamecube? If you haven't then I HIGHLY recommend it. Probably my second favorite RPG ever behind Final Fantasy VII. Plus, it'll help you enjoy ToS: Dawn of the New WOrld better as well.

Yeah, between the Wii and Gamecube there was a decent number of good jrpgs. Definitely a lot of hidden gems in there.

The Wii U does play Wii games perfectly. The only issue is the system turns into a Wii meaning the tablet controller shuts off and you have to use the old Wii controllers, sensor bar, etc. The Wii U does not play physical gamecube games. There are no controller ports and no memory card slots. Nintendo says they will eventually release gamecube games on their virtual console. I would not buy a Wii U if you just want to play it for the old games. You can get a Wii a lot cheaper.

Ah, I didn't know about that one. Sounds awesome. Sucks that my Wii doesn't play GC games (its one of the 2011 models). I'll hold off on playing Dawn of the New World until I can find a way to play it. Thanks dude!

Wii U is BC with Wii games but not GameCube. If backwards compatibility is your only reason for buying a Wii U though, then why bother spending all that money? Just buy a Wii instead for a whole lot cheaper.

It has a stack of them, most of which got pretty favorable reviews. I was surprised, honestly, because all I ever hear anyone talk about are the Mario and Zelda games for the most part.

Its pretty genius for JRPG makers tho. In my opinion, now that I think about it, the Wii was a very good and cheap system to invest in for certain developers when it came to taking certain risks without loosing so much.

I think you have the Wii confused with the Nintendo DS :P DS/3DS is a freaking JRPG house. PSP has a very large selection as well. The cheaper development costs and risk of loss versus reward are why so many JRPGs transitioned to handhelds instead of consoles this gen.

Yeah, I was hoping this was going to be the case for the Wii (and now the Wii U) in general. I figured at least jrpg makers would be all for a cheaper development console to try out their games. It happened to a point but I was hoping for even more to be honest. I think devs were scared that even though the Wii had a big install base, most of those people people were ones who weren't buying jrpgs...

My faith was restored a bit with Xenoblade and Last Story for the Wii and Ni No Kuni for PS3. I only played the demo of Ni No Kuni but it seems right up my alley.

Xenoblade is quite good. I haven't been able to devote the time to it that I would like but whenever I pick it up I get really engrossed in the game.

I thought about holding on to it just because of that right there. It was a Gamestop exclusive retail product. Im telling you man, I can't wait to get a car so I could go to flee markets and search for rare quality titles.

My friend bought 6 brand new copies of Xenoblade and made me sell them on Ebay for him. The last 4 copies sold for 130 bucks... I kinda want to punch my friend.

Also, anyone play White Knight Chronicles 2? I played the first and see the 2nd one is cheap as hell now. Is it worth it? I know you get both games, so that's pretty neat.

I really need to get around to DDS. I've had the first game for almost 3 years and just never got around to it. I had planned on playing through both games last summer but I decided to replay P3 Fes instead :P Shoji Meguro is one of my favorite composers though. SMT games have some amazing soundtracks.

Fire Emblem: Awakening is legit greatness. So many subtle little changes here and there and fantastic production values. I'll be really surprised if this isn't the highest selling Fire Emblem to release.

If Nintendo didn't totally screw up with their shipments it would probably easily be the highest selling one. There is just not nearly enough supply to meet the demand right now. Maybe it'll be the best selling overall game in the series once they can get more copies shipped out, but idk about if it'll have the most at release.

I have been feeling that way too. While I'm working I will go to a few different RPG playlists on the youtube and get all pumped up to play some RPGs next time I get the chance. Then when I get a chance to play a lot of times I'll do something else or it doesn't live up to the glory of the music :?

Speaking of Last Story, I haven't played it in almost a month probably. I need to jump in to that again when I get a chance. I have too much on my plate right now...

So, I'll be honest. I have never been the one to play RPG since Poke'mon. I was looking for a RPG to get into. Right now FF VII and FF IX are on sale. I will probably be playing it on my Vita. So which one and Why? Thx

Both :P If I had to pick one I'd probably tell you IX because it's a bit newer and the materia system in FFVII might be a bit cumbersome for you.

If you never played them before FFIX is the one to go for, it has aged quite a well.

You can't go wrong with either game, they are both awesome. They are actually both a great way to get back in to RPGs too... neither has a very complicated combat or leveling system but they can get deep if you want them to be. I never thought the materia system was that cumbersome other than switching them around to different characters from time to time. If anything, the system is pretty simple.

Come to think about it, I wish the Final Fantasy series would go back to a simple yet flexible leveling and character building system like back in the FF6 or FF7 days... enough of the Crystarium branches and license points and these convoluted trees.

For someone who doesn't typically play those kinds of games it could be. I personally had no problem with it but he might. Now the Junction system from FFVIII on the other hand.... steer clear of that one :P

Final Fantasy 4 deserves more love. That was the first RPG I ever played, I didn't play it until like 2004 or 2005 on the GBA. It was my gateway RPG and still one of my favorites. I have the SNES version on my Wii virtual console and I've been playing it a little here and there for the fun of it (which makes no sense because I have a huge backlog of rpgs that I have yet to finish). I played it some last night because I had a little time to kill and I always remember how great the game is when I play it. I'm early on right now, I'm at Mount Hobs. Great game.
