The trade deadline is less than a mere 14 hours away. This is always one of my favorite days of the year, but I'm not really expecting as many trades tomorrow with so many teams still in contention for a playoff spot. I'm still crazy enough to get up at 5am Pacific to watch TSN's TradeCentre coverage though! Anyone else with me? XD

hockey73
I kind of expect Liles to be traded by the end of today.

Well I guess not, lol.

I thought the Sabres would trade Tim Connolly but they didn't...and they bring in a former Junior linemate of Connolly's in Brad Boyes.

Oilers trade Dustin Penner and his infamous offer sheet contract to L.A. for a 1st rounder, 2nd rounder, and Colten Teubert. The Oil are going to be a dangerous team in a couple of years.

Yah it was a pretty non-eventful trade deadline.

Especially with Brad Richards name being tossed around. And Chris Phillips who ended up signing an extension with Ottawa. I was surprised the Islanders waived Rob Schremp

I think it was smart of Dallas to keep Richards, they might lose him to FA and get nothing in return, but without him, their chances of making the playoffs go down dramatically.

What they got for Penner was..meh. Teubert could be great, but has been average in Manchester, but may get a chance to shine on a very, very week D. And this years draft, outside of the top 10 maybe even 5, is mediocre. You never know though, they could get a guy around 20th (where the pick would be right now), and he could be good. Same for their second. But I would of thought they'd try and get Simmons or someone who can play now. Smart of Dallas to keep him. He's apparently healthy, but another head shot, and he could be out for the rest of the year, or next year and a half. And you don't know if he'll sign with out, kinda like Kovy. So a risk and reward trade. He could be healthy and carry your team to the playoffs, or..get hurt, or not sign with you and you lose early in the playoffs. Plus Dallas is in a playoff race. Smart move by Joe, and by other GM's

San Jose signs goalie, Antti Niemi to a four year $15.2 million deal. A good deal that defenitely won't hamstring the Sharks

Won't last long much longer, they're going to lose to the red-hot Leafs Saturday! And I actually get to go to the game for once. I like the Niemi deal. He's played really well, getting them form 11th or 12th to 3rd. If he continues, and plays like last year\s playoffs, they could go far.

Gee NHL, looks like that suspension really make Gillies think twice. What a joke of a player. Far worse than anything Cooke has done.

So glad to see the Leafs come around. Reimer is unbelievable and Kessel and Phaneuf has started to play like themselves. It's great to see.

Agree 100%. Even if they don't make it, it's looks like a very promising future, and next year, they could make it.

Was definitely a treat to see them beat the best team in the East, and hopefully they keep it up.

Only 2 regulation losses since the all-star break.

I highly doubt they'll lose tothe Leafs.

The 'Hawks may have an iffy defense, but Kaner will play lights out.

Yup, exactly. Red-hot players, and goalies have had a tough time against Toronto. If anyone has a big day, it's Towes.

Hmm I wonder if the Devil's will make the playoffs. They have been playing at an insane level since January, and Kovalchuk is playing like he should be. At 64 points, they are 7 points from 8th seed.

The sabres have made a nice run recently to launch them into the 8th spot. I really hope they can keep it up.

I still worry about their defense at times, but I think strong play by miller can make up for it. With the addition of Boyes, their offense is better.

I hope not, I got a bet with a friend from a couple months back that they won't. Doesn't make sense though, he's only a Brodeur fan really, and didn't care about Kovy until this past couple months, and says the Leafs are "still far, far out" yesterday even though their 5 out. Oh well. Hope for a good effort from the Leafs tomorrow.

I hope the Devils don't make it... because they are back to playing that Jacques Lamaire trapping, BORING, LAME style hockey that really ruined the game for years. I think the reason they are winning is because the other team has fallen asleep for most of the game it's so boring. We need the NHL to be fast paced and end to end action. The trapping defensive style ugly hockey is for the birds and unwatchable.

Seabas989

I saw the last period of that game, I do believe the capitals are the better all around team. Tampa Bay has insane talent on offensive, I'd argue they have more offensive firepower than Washington. But Tampa has a shakey defense, where as washington is pretty solid in their own zone. I still would not want to play TB in a series in the playoffs, if their offense can explode on you

Flyers finally snapped their skid with a 4-1 win over Edmonton. I'm sure they were a bit worried after getting destroyed, 7-0 to the Rangers.

Scary scary injury last night in the Bruins and Habs game. Chara rides Pacioretty into the boards and gives him a little shove unfortunately right into the stanchion by the bench. Pacioretty has a severe concussion and fractured 4th vertebrae. Here's the hit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jimZ1tSdPY0&feature=player_embedded

What do you guys think?

I don't think Chara is a dirty player, and I don't think he had dirty intentions, but you MUST know where you are in the rink, and you just CAN'T make that hit. The puck was already dumped into the zone and Boynton pretty much had control of the puck already. Since he doesn't have a history, I don't think the suspension should be very severe, but I would be happy in the neighborhood of 5 games.

Very scary hit, hope Max is able to make a full and speedy recovery. I don't think Chara intended at all to hit him right into the glass like that, however considering it was interfernece still, and all the outrage this has caused, the NHL has to give Chara some sort of suspension. I'm thinking some where in between 3-5 games.

How the **** was Chara not disciplined AT ALL? That's sickening. Isn't this the same league who suspended a guy for 6 games for making jokes about another player's girlfriend? The NHL is run by a bunch of morons.

If that hit was made anywhere else on the ice, it was a interfernece penalty and thats it. That's basically what the league is saying and I understand. But they still have to something about this, either add more padding to the glass there, or put some sort of rule in place so the next time this happens they can suspend the guy atleast.

I think he should of been suspended, even though it just happened to happen there. He knocked him out cold, and his career could be over. He SHOULD be fined at the least. It's appalling to me. I don't care if it was a "fluke" or because Chara is bigger..something should of happened.

At first, it did look like a hockey play gone bad. But there is a history with Pacioretti and the Bruins, and the B's don't like him. And there is a still picture out there that looks like Chara is driving Max's head into the turnbuckle. Now it was interference, and after looking at it again, I think Chara should've gotten 3 games. He does play hard, but he can be dirty at times.

This police investigation on Chara is absolutely ridiculous, it's not like he pulled a Bertuzzi and sucker punched someone in the back of the head. No it wasn't by any standards close to a clean hit, but both players were going after a puck and Chara finished off his check, these things happen. Should Chara of been suspended, yes he should, maybe 3-5 games, just like other players who committed a similar offense, but there shouldn't be a police investigation on the incident. Now I don't expect anything to come from it, but the fact that they are even doing an investigation is plain stupid; if they did that for every incident similar to this, there would be 4 or 5 plus a season.

I saw that and wasn't sure what to think. All the analysts say it wasn't a dirty hit by any means, even if it was rather hard. If the police do do something, I can't imagine what the ramifications would be.

I thought the hit was clean. Chara never left his feet nor did head lead with the elbow or aim for the head. It was a bad place on the ice. Say what you will about Chara but remember that he is on a team in which Patrice Bergeron suffered a lengthy concussion from a hit from behind. Savard aswell who got a concussion from Matt Cooke (I assume that you most of you know what Savard has been through this year). Matt Cooke got no suspension for that hit despite leaving his feet and leading with the elbow. Cooke also was a long time repeat offender.

I agree.

These things happen, they should let it go.

Granted, it was a terrible accident and I'm sorry for Pacioretty, but it's hockey.

Chara has never been a dirty player, it was an accident.

Some people think he is, IDK why. They get mixed up that just cause he's big and really strong, he's not dirty. Players are defending him, like Vinny (on TBL) who fought him 7 years ago, but Chara help up from punching him again ask Vinny was already down, shielding himself. I still think he should have been suspended 2 games.

Savard aswell who got a concussion from Matt Cooke (I assume that you most of you know what Savard has been through this year). Matt Cooke got no suspension for that hit despite leaving his feet and leading with the elbow. Cooke also was a long time repeat offender.

Well players DO know where that turnbuckle is, and the hit happened nowhere near the puck. If you look at a still shot, you can see Chara driving his arms into Max's head toward the turnbuckle. Chara got a misconduct and an interference for the play, and his physical play is very borderline at times.

Yes players DO know where it is. Yet players get hit there more often than not. Not everyone has gotton hurt. Sure the puck wasn't there. Hits do happen away from the puck. It's hockey after all.

Yeah, but when you put a lick on a guy that effects his vertabrae, you should at least get some kind of consequence. An example needed to be set here.

An illegal hit should be penalized (ie. with suspension or fine) but I don't believe it should depend on any injury received. Put it this way, if the exact same thing happened and he didn't get hurt, there wouldn't have been a big deal made; Chara should get some sort of suspension/fine, but it shouldn't be dependent on the injured vertebrae, just for the hit itself, separate from injury sustained. If you start suspending/fining based on what type of injury was sustained, it's gonna make things more complicated than it already is. Is a broken arm a 5 game suspension, sore shoulder 2 games, or vertebrae injury 20 games? Now the problem with the NHL is they are way to inconsistent in assigning suspension/fines and that needs to change. If it's an illegal hit, it shouldn't matter if the player gets hurt, how bad it looks, if the opposing player had intent, etc it should be an automatic 10 game suspension for the first offense, 20 for the next, etc but it should stay consistent. No more assigning 3 games to this person, and 5 games to this person, and 0 games to this person. Judging a players intent is hard, but an illegal hit is an illegal hit, it's not really to hard to distinguish what is clean and what is dirty.

Edit: Now I do realize that occasionally there will be that incident that is in that grey area (like Chara's). But the NHL needs to step in a clarify a few rules. For example, if a player takes two full strides (or w/e) without the puck, he is deamed neutral and thus hitting him would be an illegal hit.
