I said it when it went down, and I feel validated in saying that Brian Cashman is a terrible GM, and the Montero deal for Pineda was awwwful. Pineda had a clear dropoff last season, and Montero is a projected batting champion. Another great call by Cashman to not trade him for Cliff Lee, but deal him for Pineda. Cashman has made some horrendous moves, yet somehow he is still praised. I was so livid when I heard about Pineda yesterday that I felt like I was going to have a friggin heart attack. He covets a guy like Hughes, who ends up being terrible, yet he trades away Ian Kennedy. But you know who bothers me more than Cashman? The yankee fans who defend Cashman. Any other GM with the Yankees' payroll could've done what Cashman did. Sure some signings have been great like Sabathia, but the bad outweighs the good significantly. Kevin Brown, Jarret Wright, Jon Leiber, Pavano, Pineda, etc etc etc. Any other team and he would have been long gone. Im sick of this crap. Why trade Montero for an overweight slob of a pitcher who had a clear dropoff. If I am not mistaken, they had a chance at Felix a few years ago but he wouldn't include Hughes or Montero. I envy Mariners' fans who get to see a future batting champ in their lineup. And if the Mariners did sell damaged goods and knew it, then good for them. They're not the moron who pulled the trigger on this trade. Cashman infuriates me to the point where I want to scream. And I swear if i read another Yankee fan on a message board say that this is a long term deal and this year doesn't matter, then I am going to explode. The fact is, this isn't a Tommy John type situation where he can recover and still be great. A shoulder issue is by far the most serious injury a pitcher can suffer. Pineda will NEVER be the same as he was pre-all star break last year. And him showing up overweight to training camp just shows his work ethic. I don't think he has the mental makeup to actually work his way back to being a decent pitcher. I'm sick to my stomach. But like I said, enjoy your future batting champ, Mariners' fans.

As a life long Yankees fan, I agree with you. This deal made me so mad, and is still doing so. Montero has so much potential. And his career is not riding on his arm staying healthy. I think Cashman will be on a very short leash.

That's the problem though, no he won't. For some reason dumb Yankees' fans, and the Yankees' management love him. He is just awful. The few good signings he has made, IE Sabathia, anybody with a brain would've and could've made. He clearly does not know pitching.I know he wont really be on a short leash, it's just my hope that he will be.

Wise words. I think Joba would have been fine out of the pen, instead he's injured both physically and mentally. Same goes for Hughes. When I see him throw, I see reliever stuff.

Totally agree. Joba was RUINED by Cashman. Is this the MLB thread or the opening day thread getting bumped?
I'm getting sick watching Humber die tonight. Dude went from throwing a perfect game to giving up seven in three innings. Loaded up the bases then gave up a grand slam, then a solo. This is my concern with him, inconsistency.
While it makes me SICK that Pineda is hurt it IS a long term deal, can't judge the deal yet. This MOFO, Pineda that is, better be in shape next season or heads will roll. He is lucky the Yanks pitching looks to be deep this year. Master_Live
The thing is though, he suffered a shoulder injury. While we can say it's a long term deal, I can't see him ever becoming the same player the Yankees thought they were getting. There is no way they would trade Jesus Montero for what Pineda will come back to be. They traded him because they thought Pineda was going to play like the All Star that he was. I'd rather him need Tommy John, where at least he could come back and still be just as good. Not to mention, he showed up to spring training overweight. Not a good sign of work ethic. With Sabathia, he has been durable, so I don't question his effort. I do question Pineda's effort and work ethic. Plus, it wasn't just a long term deal. The Yankees were expecting him to be their #3 and hoping he'd be the #2, this year. The only positive is that Nova has stepped up and is showing that he is a bonafide stud and last year was not a fluke. Nova does not get enough credit for being as good as he is.
Noticed this post on blackouts, there's a lot of people out there who can't watch MLB. "One wonders how anyone can grow up in Las Vegas and become a baseball fan. They're blacked out of the Dodgers, Padres, Angels, Giants, A's, and Diamondbacks, and they get almost none of those on cable TV. When I lived in upstate New York, I was blacked out of Pirates games because my cable provider also served a few homes in northern Pennsylvania. Now, living in El Paso, I missed yesterday's Dodger game because I'm in the blackout territory of a team 800 miles away that televises barely half its games. The blackout restrictions are ludicrous. They could easily be reworked with common sense in mind, without losing any of their financial benefit to the teams. This should be at the top of MLB's to-do list but it never is."X360PS3AMD05
It really is ridiculous. MLB.TV would have my $125/year, but I'm blacked out of Cardinals games, despite the fact that (as far as I've been able to tell) no one is airing Cardinals games up here (Chicagoland).
Great bounce back win today. EE with a grand slam, Bautista hit the ball hard, and Morrow showing why he's a #2 starter, 6 shutout innings, 5 hits, 9 K's.

Blackouts are ridiculous. Luckily my cable company has the extra innings package thing. They only blackout local games which is the Braves, who are on tv anyway because of Fox Sports. I wanted the MLBTV so I could watch games on my Ipad, but I just bought the AT Bat App instead and listen to the radio broadcasts. I've been out of the loop because of my focus on the draft, so I missed Kemp's walk off last night. MAN! Kemp is SOOO good. I know he said he's going 50-50, but if he keeps this up he'll go 70-10! KeMVP! KeMVP!Heck of a debut for Bryce Harper. Everything we've ever heard about him is 100% true: he hits for contact with solid power, has a great glove and even better arm, he runs with above average speed, and (best of all) he's a total douche. Baseball hasn't had a more perfect villain since Albert Belle. Give Harper a year or two, and he will be the single most hated player in baseball.

Agreed again Oleg, I'm starting to see a pattern here :o

I already can't stand the kid. I will forever call him Hotshot. That's all I see in him. Add to that, his god awful mullet, and you get BH. He's got skills, but I will always dislike him.
Which mean he will play for the Yanks. Yes!Heck of a debut for Bryce Harper. Yep. Go ahead and mark your calendars. The Nationals control him through the 2018 season, and I think we all know both he and Scott Boras want free agency as soon as possible. Bryce Harper will be hitting 3rd for the Yankees on Opening Day, 2019.
Harper is gonna be great. Nats have a bright future. Oh and:
:P

I don't think anyone is questioning his talent. Just his general d-baggery. Barry Bonds is a notorious a-hole, doesn't make him any less great. Same goes for plenty of others. It's just that Hotshot is the newest Hotshot on the block.

He's good for baseball. He could bring back a lot of the casual fans that have left over the years. I think the majority of true baseball fans do not like him, but they understand that they need him. Personally, I'd rather have Mike Trout on my team. The MLB needs to market Matt Kemp more. This guy is by far the best player in baseball, and with the lack of black players, he could bring some interest back. I'd bet more people know who Bryce Harper is than Matt Kemp.

I dunno. Attendance and ratings are pretty much better than they've ever been, so it's not like MLB has really been in need of these casual fans.
[QUOTE="worlock77"]Seems like it. 0 HR's in April. I wouldn't worry about it. People go through these slumps. A few years ago Derek Jeter went through a horrible slump to open the season. That said, even when Pujols starts playing well again, is he going to play like the guy he was during his MVP years, or is he going to play like the sub 300 guy he was last year? Nobody knows.Did Pujols leave his bat in St. Louis?

Agreed TDF. Add to that he's having to learn new pitchers and having to deal with a new locale to live and work in, and we shouldn't be surprised this is happening. How many guys who dominated in one league switched leagues and instantly dominated? It'll take some time, but he's a pro and has pride.
-
I just hope he gets back into form soon, the AL has been great so far this season. Once the Angels turn things around, it'll get even better.
I'm not sure I entirely buy the "he's facing new pitchers" argument. Considering his experience, between the minors, his decade in the majors, the amount of player movement between teams, interleague play, and three World Series apperances, surely facing new picters ought to be something he's somewhat accustomed to and able to compensate for.
But at least he had the usual suspects to face to break up any long streaks. How many of the guys he's facing now has he ever faced before? Arm angle, release point, velocity, control and pitch choice all affect your decisions at the plate, he's just learning the ropes right now. I know it's a weak excuse, but it's an excuse just the same. I don't think anyone really knows what's going on. It could be anything, including the baseball gods.
