[QUOTE="X360PS3AMD05"]"I used to work for NBC (covering the Olympics) and ABC Sports (before they killed that brand). Now I run my own television and movie studio that cuts trailers and episodes and so on. The biggest offenders by far when interfering with journalistic integrity, that I saw, were usually the sponsors (at least in sports media). This was especially true for the Olympic Games where the corporate dollar was like an unstoppable supernatural force. But Id still say that 90% of reporters that I worked with were more interested in being part of the story than objectively reporting a story. They wanted to talk about their own opinions rather than report only facts and let the readers or viewers make up their own minds. I was told once that Harold Reynolds was fired from ESPN because he attacked the sponsors after a taping of Baseball Tonight. And that the whole event of him trying to molest an intern or whatever was ESPN smearing him, because he used to hammer the corporate brass for talking down to him and giving him orders. He was told to stick to the script and not go off the prompter. The way that ESPN would do BBTN is that theyd do a segment like Who deserves the Cy Young? Sponsored by Fast Food Joint, and each broadcaster was assigned a player to talk about by a segment producer. So HR was assigned to someone (I think it was Mariano Rivera) who didnt deserve the award looking at the stats, and he went off the prompter and didnt follow the script and chose a different player. Most reporters right now want to be on Around The Horn or whatever scream at the top of your lungs to win an argument program is hot this week. It is never about attacking stories objectively. Now it is always about finding the angle that will get the most attention. The line between reporter and talking head is getting smaller and smaller every year and its extremely difficult to find reporters that dont crowbar their opinions into articles for the sole sake of getting their own views out into the world. Even worse is that those shows often consist of zero factual evidence or deep analysis and they often reduce immense subjects into bumper sticker arguments and catch phrases. PTI essentially prides itself on never covering a topic for more than a few minutes. Look at the Bernie Fine case. ESPN did everything in its power to compare that case to the Sandusky incident. Often drawing direct parallels that implied or outright stated that the same acts that Sandusky was accused of were the same things that Fine was doing behind the scenes. And it looks as if ESPN deliberately manufactured false evidence in one case by putting two accusers who had never met in touch with each other so that they could cook up a story. ESPNs comment boards on its site are filled with fans ripping on ESPNs for flooding the news with lies and irresponsible reporting. Im not saying that Bob Hohler is deliberately making things up with no basis in reality. But he is clearly manufacturing a story to fit the most compelling narrative. It is highly telling that the overwhelming majority of on the record comments regarding Franconas behavior as manager are either neutral or positive. And that the off of the record and anonymous comments try to shred him to pieces. And those anonymous sources are so vaguely described that they are probably not more than two or three people, but the article is so deliberately ambiguous that it seems like Francona has an army of detractors. When you hide behind a screen, anonymity, there is no accountability. You can exaggerate and the reporters will print it because it sells like crazy and raises the reporters profile. Bob Hohler basically was the one journalist who would print the allegations against Francona to fit the narrative that the anonymous accusers wanted. Was it irresponsible journalism? I would say yes. Simply because everyone on record supports Francona, and he vehemently denied all of the negatives that were attributed to him. It seems like someone had a personal or professional vendetta against Francona and Bob Hohler gave them an outlet to blast him in the media. And whats worse is that those anonymous accusers can have their arguments augmented by the associated with a major newspaper. Honestly Ive never been impressed by the mainstream MLB media. During the steroids era I watched as every single writer turned a blind eye to the giant enormous bodies that players had. When Bonds was breaking the record and putting up OPS and IBB/BB numbers that made my head explode like Scanners I couldnt fathom how the beat reporters didnt realize that he was juicing like crazy. Thats why I stick to places like Fangraphs or Rob Neyers home at SBN. Id much rather read the objective statistical approach to baseball than the screaming ranting lunatic talking head reporters who blindly stumbled through the steroids era. Please someone bring back FireJoeMorgan." Found this on Fangraphs and found it interesting.

At first I got angry whenever someone said something like: "Oh man, ESPN is the new TMZ!!! Thay suck, blah blah". But now I can't pretty much stand them. It seems the only hard journalistic work they do is for Outside the Lines(top notch). I avoid Sports Center unless something big happens (ex. today's perfect game). Now I pick and choose, I watch PTI, their NCAAB and NCAAF coverage, and sometimes Baseball Tonight. And this is why sports fans need someone to challenge ESPN with coverage which focuses more on substance. I hope NBC Sports doesn't miss the boat all the attention they will get this summer with the Olympics and can use that to jump start the NBC Sports channel. With sports properties like the NFL, NHL and the Olympics they could conceivably mount a challenge in the near future. Also, with NBA rights with ESPN expiring soon hopefully they can snatch those too.

I got sick of PTI a while ago, ATH is ok for Woody cause he's funny but i pretty much got sick of it too. I'll record them after a big playoff game to see what they say but that's about it. That was just beautiful  I even flipped by when it was 9-0 and said "oh well" and changed it. In some ways i'm jealous that a GM/manager will come under fire if things aren't going well this early, but i'm also hearing people in Boston try to show how much they "Don't care" about the Red Sox and make fun of the team? Seems kinda twisted. Notgraphs says "Go Look at Pedro's number from 1999 and 2000" just insane! How did he not win the MVP? One of those years was the ASG in Boston where he struck out like the first 10 batters IIRC. http://www.fangraphs.com/not/index.php/pedro-martini/ U Jelly? Kemp hit another HR, Beast Mode! I don't think this team is that good, but just enjoy it for now! Cliff Lee to 15-day DL with oblique strain, OH OH! Not good for last place team. Watching Quick Pitch with that new hot anchor made me wonder what ever happened to the other girls who used to host on MLBN. You know how that girl Dana Jacobson on ESPN used to be fat? It seems most networks replace women with hotter women, so i always wondered when she would get the ax. A while back she lost the weight and appears to be wearing more make-up, i wonder if they told her to or if she just decided to have a better chance of keeping her job cause i'm pretty they've added a hot new anchor or two here and there.

I said it when it went down, and I feel validated in saying that Brian Cashman is a terrible GM, and the Montero deal for Pineda was awwwful. Pineda had a clear dropoff last season, and Montero is a projected batting champion. Another great call by Cashman to not trade him for Cliff Lee, but deal him for Pineda. Cashman has made some horrendous moves, yet somehow he is still praised. I was so livid when I heard about Pineda yesterday that I felt like I was going to have a friggin heart attack. He covets a guy like Hughes, who ends up being terrible, yet he trades away Ian Kennedy. But you know who bothers me more than Cashman? The yankee fans who defend Cashman. Any other GM with the Yankees' payroll could've done what Cashman did. Sure some signings have been great like Sabathia, but the bad outweighs the good significantly. Kevin Brown, Jarret Wright, Jon Leiber, Pavano, Pineda, etc etc etc. Any other team and he would have been long gone. Im sick of this crap. Why trade Montero for an overweight slob of a pitcher who had a clear dropoff. If I am not mistaken, they had a chance at Felix a few years ago but he wouldn't include Hughes or Montero. I envy Mariners' fans who get to see a future batting champ in their lineup. And if the Mariners did sell damaged goods and knew it, then good for them. They're not the moron who pulled the trigger on this trade. Cashman infuriates me to the point where I want to scream. And I swear if i read another Yankee fan on a message board say that this is a long term deal and this year doesn't matter, then I am going to explode. The fact is, this isn't a Tommy John type situation where he can recover and still be great. A shoulder issue is by far the most serious injury a pitcher can suffer. Pineda will NEVER be the same as he was pre-all star break last year. And him showing up overweight to training camp just shows his work ethic. I don't think he has the mental makeup to actually work his way back to being a decent pitcher. I'm sick to my stomach. But like I said, enjoy your future batting champ, Mariners' fans.

As a life long Yankees fan, I agree with you. This deal made me so mad, and is still doing so. Montero has so much potential. And his career is not riding on his arm staying healthy. I think Cashman will be on a very short leash.

That's the problem though, no he won't. For some reason dumb Yankees' fans, and the Yankees' management love him. He is just awful. The few good signings he has made, IE Sabathia, anybody with a brain would've and could've made. He clearly does not know pitching.

Wise words. I think Joba would have been fine out of the pen, instead he's injured both physically and mentally. Same goes for Hughes. When I see him throw, I see reliever stuff.

While it makes me SICK that Pineda is hurt it IS a long term deal, can't judge the deal yet. This MOFO, Pineda that is, better be in shape next season or heads will roll. He is lucky the Yanks pitching looks to be deep this year.

Mets give Jose Jose Jose Jose Reyes a rude welcome back... with a 3 game sweep of the Marlins and a walk off win to cap it off! Mets for the first time in a zillion years had 9 guys in their starting lineup today that were all 'Home Grown' players.

Is this the MLB thread or the opening day thread getting bumped?

I'm getting sick watching Humber die tonight. Dude went from throwing a perfect game to giving up seven in three innings. Loaded up the bases then gave up a grand slam, then a solo. This is my concern with him, inconsistency.

Just a matter of time with that one: A) Big contract, players tend to not do as well B) Petco Park is #1 or close to #1 pitcher's park, how hard is it to "close" in that park? C) He's 34 and weighs 400 pounds lol ESPNLA headline "James Loney has 1HR" with a picture of Albert Pujols  Hamels was a Padre, who knew? http://yhoo.it/JKiZX7 Don't remind me he was a Dodger http://yhoo.it/IkwU91 Beast Mode puts one in the LCF Upper bleacher http://yhoo.it/JI5cTO Noticed this post on blackouts, there's a lot of people out there who can't watch MLB. "One wonders how anyone can grow up in Las Vegas and become a baseball fan. They're blacked out of the Dodgers, Padres, Angels, Giants, A's, and Diamondbacks, and they get almost none of those on cable TV. When I lived in upstate New York, I was blacked out of Pirates games because my cable provider also served a few homes in northern Pennsylvania. Now, living in El Paso, I missed yesterday's Dodger game because I'm in the blackout territory of a team 800 miles away that televises barely half its games. The blackout restrictions are ludicrous. They could easily be reworked with common sense in mind, without losing any of their financial benefit to the teams. This should be at the top of MLB's to-do list but it never is."

The thing is though, he suffered a shoulder injury. While we can say it's a long term deal, I can't see him ever becoming the same player the Yankees thought they were getting. There is no way they would trade Jesus Montero for what Pineda will come back to be. They traded him because they thought Pineda was going to play like the All Star that he was. I'd rather him need Tommy John, where at least he could come back and still be just as good. Not to mention, he showed up to spring training overweight. Not a good sign of work ethic. With Sabathia, he has been durable, so I don't question his effort. I do question Pineda's effort and work ethic. Plus, it wasn't just a long term deal. The Yankees were expecting him to be their #3 and hoping he'd be the #2, this year. The only positive is that Nova has stepped up and is showing that he is a bonafide stud and last year was not a fluke. Nova does not get enough credit for being as good as he is.

It really is ridiculous. MLB.TV would have my $125/year, but I'm blacked out of Cardinals games, despite the fact that (as far as I've been able to tell) no one is airing Cardinals games up here (Chicagoland).

Great bounce back win today. EE with a grand slam, Bautista hit the ball hard, and Morrow showing why he's a #2 starter, 6 shutout innings, 5 hits, 9 K's.

Blackouts are ridiculous. Luckily my cable company has the extra innings package thing. They only blackout local games which is the Braves, who are on tv anyway because of Fox Sports. I wanted the MLBTV so I could watch games on my Ipad, but I just bought the AT Bat App instead and listen to the radio broadcasts. I've been out of the loop because of my focus on the draft, so I missed Kemp's walk off last night. MAN! Kemp is SOOO good. I know he said he's going 50-50, but if he keeps this up he'll go 70-10! KeMVP! KeMVP!

Heck of a debut for Bryce Harper. Everything we've ever heard about him is 100% true: he hits for contact with solid power, has a great glove and even better arm, he runs with above average speed, and (best of all) he's a total douche. Baseball hasn't had a more perfect villain since Albert Belle. Give Harper a year or two, and he will be the single most hated player in baseball.

Yep. Go ahead and mark your calendars. The Nationals control him through the 2018 season, and I think we all know both he and Scott Boras want free agency as soon as possible. Bryce Harper will be hitting 3rd for the Yankees on Opening Day, 2019.

I don't think anyone is questioning his talent. Just his general d-baggery. Barry Bonds is a notorious a-hole, doesn't make him any less great. Same goes for plenty of others. It's just that Hotshot is the newest Hotshot on the block.

Three homers and a triple for Braun tonight at PETCO Park, first player since 1975 to do that.

Oleg_Huzwog

He's good for baseball. He could bring back a lot of the casual fans that have left over the years. I think the majority of true baseball fans do not like him, but they understand that they need him. Personally, I'd rather have Mike Trout on my team. The MLB needs to market Matt Kemp more. This guy is by far the best player in baseball, and with the lack of black players, he could bring some interest back. I'd bet more people know who Bryce Harper is than Matt Kemp.

I dunno. Attendance and ratings are pretty much better than they've ever been, so it's not like MLB has really been in need of these casual fans.

You should go ahead and edit this thread; drop the Opening Day from the title.

Maybe it's time for the rum offerings to Jobu. Jesus doesn't seem to be hitting many fastballs.

I wouldn't worry about it. People go through these slumps. A few years ago Derek Jeter went through a horrible slump to open the season. That said, even when Pujols starts playing well again, is he going to play like the guy he was during his MVP years, or is he going to play like the sub 300 guy he was last year? Nobody knows.

Agreed TDF. Add to that he's having to learn new pitchers and having to deal with a new locale to live and work in, and we shouldn't be surprised this is happening. How many guys who dominated in one league switched leagues and instantly dominated? It'll take some time, but he's a pro and has pride.

I just hope he gets back into form soon, the AL has been great so far this season. Once the Angels turn things around, it'll get even better.

I'm not sure I entirely buy the "he's facing new pitchers" argument. Considering his experience, between the minors, his decade in the majors, the amount of player movement between teams, interleague play, and three World Series apperances, surely facing new picters ought to be something he's somewhat accustomed to and able to compensate for.

But at least he had the usual suspects to face to break up any long streaks. How many of the guys he's facing now has he ever faced before? Arm angle, release point, velocity, control and pitch choice all affect your decisions at the plate, he's just learning the ropes right now. I know it's a weak excuse, but it's an excuse just the same. I don't think anyone really knows what's going on. It could be anything, including the baseball gods.

And Adam Dunn had five. I'll say it, the Dunn signing>the Pujols signing.

Glad to see the sh*t with the Dodgers is finally settled. Christ that was messy. I'm a bit surprised at the final sale price though.

League leaders at the moment seem to be rather even this season from both camps. Hoping that translates into a great all star game later.
