Hmmm. I don't want to sound presumptuious however this isn't going to come out right however I put it. So brace yourself.

Yes it's unfair, it may be what they do for a living, however not everyone is good at their jobs, nor do it to their full capacity. I highly doubt some of them even give them decent scores, or even played the game for that matter. Some times they are on the spot, however I rarely see that. Yes, I'm exactly saying that, however not all of them-I know some of them try hard to rate things how they should be rated and give none biased reviews. I'm not an average gamer, so I dunno. Even if they have played more games than I have, it makes them no less of a Guru at gaming than me. I highly doubt they are deserving of more respect just for playing more games than other people, not everyone can sit down for hours at a time and play a game, some people have jobs, school, projects, or other things to spend their time on.

I am sorry. But I disagree so much with everything you just said. I can't believe you'd say that just because they play more games that doesn't make them more of a "guru" than anyone else. Of course it does. More games means a more broad look at most games. They have more experience. They have seen so much more so they have other things to compare games to.

And to say that you don't think they even play the games? That's ridiculous. That is probably the silliest thing I have ever heard. I can't believe how insulting you have sounded.

Of course not everyone can sit down for hours and play a game because we have jobs. But they can, because that istheir job. Didn't we cover that already? I don't think that they are just f'ing around and giving half-assed reviews. They are getting payed to do reviews. And to say that gamers don't give biased reviews is also a silly thing to say, as gamers themselves are probably the most biased of people as they have preferences of what series they favour and such. Even people on this very board are so biased towards certain systems or certain games that they won't allow to accept that a game did badly.

It's not just Gamespot that gave Blue Dragon a 6. Overall, it's doing poorly.

Just because they get paid to do it, doesn't mean they don't half-ass some reviews. I think it deserved an 8.

Celes, if you liked a game that got a low score, would you stick to your post, or would you ide with Gab's post?

I'm sorry, I just thought that that was terribly insulting.

If I was looking forward to a game and then saw that it turned out poorly I'd probably skip out on it. I do tend to read (and I do mean the literal term of the word, not just look at the score and call it good) several reviews on a game and then see if I think I would like it. Games are way to freakin' expensive to just be spending money on every game I've been looking forward to.

Case in point - Lair and Heavenly Sword. I've been looking forward to both games for a while now. Lair's not doing very well at all. And Heavenly Sword isn't doing as great as I wanted it to. But just because a game seemed good before it was released means nothing until it's open for the public to play it and for us to see how it is ourselves. After reading the review for Lair, I don't think I'll get it anymore, since I probably won't like it based on the problems it has. But I'm definitely not going to say that so-and-so are biased and that their reviews suck just because they told us what they think of a certain game. They're actually saving me precious dollars.

Too big of quotes to go around pressing all the quick quote buttons. Hahahahaha! I feel a heated debate comming on! Wooo hoo saddle up! Thank you Cecil, I just got on so there's some new messages to catch up on. You couldn't have put it more clearly. Just because you get PAID to do a review doesn't mean it won't be half-assed as you just said. Yeah, I knew what I was saying was going to likely to start something like this, I even said so before I posted it. Just because you've played tons of games, it does NOT make you a gaming Guru. Sure you've got a wide perspective on the different tiles, and genres, that isn't saying much. A lot of people have tried different genres. To actually have played those games through to the end, so what? It's not like it makes them a god of gaming or anything. For all we know they could've been THE worst players of the games they've been reviewing is my point. Also another point is that it seems when it comes to big titled games behind controversial companies, people tend to get biased.

"Well it doesn't hold up to my expectations from Sakaguchi, 1/5!!! FAIL!"

"Definitely no Final Fantasy, it sucks, don't buy it!!!"

"They should NEVER make another game, they're horrible! Gosh, idiot!"

My point is I think they get biased at some point in time, or they compare and contrast far to much. Besides, have you seen some of the reviews they do...? They are overly harsh, and only a few reviews are actually spot on. I've never heard once that my review was biased, or anyone challenge it for anything other than a spelling error, because I judge it not as a fan, but as a stand alone game-without titles or brands. If you read into the reviews on this site more than actual experience, I think you'll miss out on quite a bit Celes. To say they all don't do good at their jobs is incorrect, however not everyone is good at their jobs, however I'm not saying that the reviewer isn't good at his. However think like this: Not everyone has good days, not everyone is Mr. Perfect all day long, shtick happens-albeity some times very frequently. They aren't deserving of ANYMORE respect than me, you, or Joe Blow across the street. So Heavenly Sword, and Lair aren't doing good review wise, so what? Doesn't mean it's not a good game, or perhaps you might find you enjoy it far more than the reviews say. This reminds me too much of societal dynamics, per instance: Jane won't buy a product from the store because the Television said not to. Not because she had a free choice, but because the media happens to ingrain into her brain tells her not to-somewhat robbed of her free choice. So if games receive a horrible rating, you'll never play it, however remember lifes about taking risks, nothing good comes from an uneventful life. Live a little honey. Sorry if this sounds rude, as I know it's probably going too. :D

I wasn't trying to insult you Celes, but I had to say what I posted.

Gabranth, the reason people are giving it bad reviews(like the one you posted) is because

1. They expected another Chrono Trigger.

That's the main reason for most of BD's scores. They expected another game as good as CT, but were disappointed. Sakaguchi said that BD will be a light-hearted fun game. When I saw that quote, I set my standards to what he said would be like. I haven't played it yet, but by what I've seen from it, it looks good.

Celes, if I listened to reviews all the time, I wouldn't of gotten Radiata Stories, which I thought was funny and a good game.

What I'm saying is, don't let reviews control you and the games you buy. Get games that YOU would like to get.

While yes, they do help in this generation of games since they're $60, not all the time they are right in their reviews.

Like Gab said, just because heavenly sword and Lair aren't doing good doesn't meant that it's not a good game.

You guys aren't understanding what I'm trying to say. Reviews most definitelydon't control what I buy or play. I am going to read them because it provides insight onto something that I might buy. Games are $50-$60. I don't know about you guys, but that's a lot of money. If I read several reviews saying that the control sucks, gameplay gets repetitive or something else that turns me off from it. I am probably not going to get it. Only I know what I like, and if several reviews say something that I don't think I could handle, then no, I won't buy it. But if several reviews give a game a bad score - but for reasons I could tolerate, then yea, I probably would get it. All I'm saying is I definitely don't just go off and buy games that I think I might like, I have to be certain, mostly because I am not made of money!

Wow quite a heated match of tennis going on here ;)

I personally was looking for any insights on DQ VIII or Chrono Trigger.

For DQ VIII I am past the port town and was wondering if anyone else has palyed it.

for CT I was wondering how long it is. I have played it for 6 hours and am on level 10 (about to fight the robot guard in the future)

I've been kinda off lately(2-day birthday celebration), anyway, I wanted to say that I totally agree with Celes, for real, nobody got her point. PS3 games are expensive anywhere in the world I think, specially imported games(remember that for me USA games are imported games).

I could just repeat everything else Celes just said, because that's exactly what I think, but I'll just get to the point of this, that, at the end of the day it's as simple as this:

-I have the money

-I pay for the game

-I play the game

Whether I wanna read a lot of reviews about it to find how good is it, or just take the risk of buying something disregarding any info of the game I might have gotten, I'm still the one paying for it, and I'm still the one playing it.

Not everyone is the same, I myself usually read lots of reviews and then decide whether a game is worth getting or not, I might make an exception with a game that may have some bad reviews but I still wanna play anyway(e.g. The Darkness), but not very often. Gab and Ipod may be more daring than that and just buy/rent games to check them out even if they get awful score/reviews, because maybe they can afford to do that. I can't, but if somebody ever decides to give me a game as a gift I wouldn't complain, no matter what the game is(even heroes of mana).

Also on a different note, Gabranth you were kinda offensive there, I think you could have stated your point whitout being so rude about it.

I don't always have the money to pay, which is why I WAIT for the game's price to go down. You don't have to buy the game when it comes out all the time. I don't have Blue Dragon or Bioshock yet, but that's mainly because those will be my B-Day presents. I haven't gotten Gears of war yet, and that's $30 now. I just wait for the price to go down, and then I buy it.

I know what you guys mean, but I like BD, and I'm going to get it even if GS's score of it isn't good.

And that's okay for you, but I'm not you, and no I don't buy the game when it comes out all the time, I just got a really cheap second-hand copy of resistance fall of man not so long ago, for only 13$ and is practically brand new.

Great choice by playing Chrono Trigger! It is one of the greatest RPGs ever! I'm glad you are enjoying it! The game will only get better and better from where you are at now in the game! =)

As far as the little review discussion some are having here, it is ok to discuss but remember to always be polite to each other even if you don't agree with what they say. Also, please be careful with using CAPS, as it is a bit unpolite since it means you are "yelling" at someone.

Personally, I always know what game I want to get, regardless of reviews. For instance, I love the Final Fantasy series, and even if the game is receiving bad reviews, I might check it out because it still will be a nice addition to my collection, and probably to the storyline of the series. Plus, there are many games that some may not like, but that doesn't mean I also wouldn't like it.

Nowadays I actually read more reviews and compare with the major review sites, but in the end, the final word is always mine, since I'm the one spending the money anyway!

And that's okay for you, but I'm not you, and no I don't buy the game when it comes out all the time, I just got a really cheap second-hand copy of resistance fall of man not so long ago, for only 13$ and is practically brand new.

Did you not fully read my post?

I WAIT MOST OF THE TIME ON A GAME. There's a 15% chance I buy a game the day it comes out or before a price drop.

I think he was just saying that he doesn't always buy games right away and that he waits too sometimes.

It doesn't seem like he was saying that in his last post, but I might be wrong.

I know my english is far from perfect(since I'm not, unlike you, a native speaker) but when i wrote: "and no I don't buy the game when it comes out all the time" I meant that I don't always buy the games right away, If i didn't write it correctly, then excuse me.

Your english was fine, but the post looked like you ignored what I said.

I wait like you too on games.

Does anyone here read EGM? I just got the new issue in the mail about two days ago and there was some Square Enix related stuff so I thought I'd share it with you guys:

(It's not a whole lot of news. You know since SE news seems to be pretty non-existant as of late! :P)

They had a 3-page preview of Last Remnant! (One of the games I am highly looking forward to).

I am not sure how much you guys already know about Last Remnant (or how much is out on the net already) but I am just going to jot down a few things that were the main features (as the preview was rather lengthy, I can't copy it all down here):

- The Hero and Antihero were both designed with Japanese gamers and Western gamers in mind, respectively.

- Last Remnant is going to features tons of races (kind of like the world of Ivalice) and some even resemble the races from Ivalice. There are lizard-people Qsitis, the cat people Sovannis (with four arms even), and the merman-esque Yamas. Oh, and of course humans, branded "Mitras".

- Rush (the the wide-eyed 18 year old hero) goes off looking for his sister. He thinks he sees her in a huge rampant on-going battle and fearlessly rushes right in (no pun intended :P).

- It's very action based.

- Remnants can span from being huge to relatively tiny. Certain people in the game can actually summon remnants to help you in battle and can come in the form of warriors, soldiers, weapons or armour.

The other bit (and a rather tiny bit) of news was from the Rumour Mill:

I will quote it:

"Heart Attack

The Kingdom Hearts series gets the chests of Disney and Final Fantasy nerds pumping. But the lack of news about the series is likely giving these superfans a stroke. No need to get a medic - my mousey mole has some info that may pump 'em up: Square Enix is apparently planning a compilation of Kingdom Hearts prequels (similar to what it's doing with Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy XIII) on various systems and handhelds." - Quartemann, EGM

So apparently, it's not just FF that's getting milked, now it's also KH. Yay? Or Nay?

Well, I can't get ticked off enough with SE. Now, they are going to milk away Kingdom Hearts. You know what, I kinda don't want SE to go on with Chrono, Grandia, Parasite and so forth - they could just sell it to other companies like Mistwalker who would most likely do a good job with them.

As far as Last Remnant, since it seems so action packed, I'll still wait for more videos and details, to see if it is going to spark my interest. But right now, I don't see anything amazing in it...

I love KH.. the more the better. Just because they're doing prequels doesn't mean that they are "milking" it.... When a writer adds more books to a series I don't start thinking: "wow they're just trying to get money out of me" I'm overjoyed because the more I can learn about any beloved characters, the better..!!

Yeah, but once they start making so many games in such a short time span, they lose the quality. It is stuff made in a rush, with really not as much effort as the original game had... but then, that's just my opinion, and there are always exceptions.

I dunno. I am really looking forward to Last Remant. I like the idea of the Remnants themselves and the action-packed action-based battle system really intrigues me. Director Hiroshi Takai says he's a huge fan of action games which is why the game itself is similar to action games (that's what it said on that preview anyway). I guess there's going to be a lot of button-mashing time-crucial combos that can either deliver huge blows or cover from critical attacks. I like this kind of stuff and it sounds fun to me. I hope the story turns out to be worthwhile, and by the looks of it, the graphics are beautiful. I wonder who is doing the score?

I also like that there are going to be lots of races. I liked all the races in XII and the new ones in Remnant sound cool too.

As far as the KH prequels go, I've never played any KH game so I don't really have anything to say about it. If I played the games, maybe I'd have more of an opinion if KH needs prequels or no.

Regarding the compilations, isn't one of the tactics the last one in the Ivaliace Alliance? I kinda wish that they would've drawn that out more. It seems it's not getting that much attention (compared to um, oh I don't know, the Final Fantasy VII compilation perhaps?)

Yea, it's silly, you know? Wasn't the Ivaliace Alliance just formed in '06? And it's going to be over already? It's strange...the only games in Ivalice Alliance are: Revenant Wings, Tactics: War of the Lions, Tactics A2, and FFXII International Zodiac Job System.

Now, SE goes on to say that the Ivaliace Alliance it supposed to "spread the word" about Ivaliace and to bring more players into the franchise. But it makes no sense. They want to spread the word but they're only including four games, and then it's over? I loved Ivalice and I wish I could see more stuff out about it.

Well yea. I mean, it's obvious that they're going to make more VII stuff as it would sell way more than anything else they have created. From a business perspective, it makes total sense.

Well, I dunno we'll see. Crisis Core looks to be shaping up to be a great game (let's all keep our fingers crossed), Advent Children wasn't a major flop (especially money wise) but Dirge of Cerberus did suck majorly. Let's just see what the future holds for VII. Maybe we'll be seeing better things? Although, I am not sure how much more they could elaborate on VII. What else could they add? A fighter game featuring Tifa? A flower-collecting game featuring Aeris?

(I am just kidding about those last two games. :P)

But seriously, I am not sure where they could continue on from now.

A fighter game featuring Tifa? A flower-collecting game featuring Aeris?

(I am just kidding about those last two games. :P)

But seriously, I am not sure where they could continue on from now.

Probably the prequel of the prequel of CC.

Let's not hope they make more silly spinoffs, look at how Tingle is getting a spin off game in Japan. Anyone know who I'm referring to from Zelda? HAHAHAH!

Oh yea, I thought they were bringing it state side too? I thought I had read that somewhere.

Honestly, out of all the characters in the Zelda universe...Tingle?

Yea, it's silly, you know? Wasn't the Ivaliace Alliance just formed in '06? And it's going to be over already? It's strange...the only games in Ivalice Alliance are: Revenant Wings, Tactics: War of the Lions, Tactics A2, and FFXII International Zodiac Job System.

Now, SE goes on to say that the Ivaliace Alliance it supposed to "spread the word" about Ivaliace and to bring more players into the franchise. But it makes no sense. They want to spread the word but they're only including four games, and then it's over? I loved Ivalice and I wish I could see more stuff out about it.

queen_valentine

Me too, but it shows where their priorities lie.

Well yea. I mean, it's obvious that they're going to make more VII stuff as it would sell way more than anything else they have created. From a business perspective, it makes total sense.

But from a quality gaming perspective, it's a bad move.

Well, I dunno we'll see. Actually If you saw the secret ending of dirge of Cerberus, you can see there is a huge loose end. I'm not gonna say anything more because I don't wanna spoil anyone here.

They should get a developer like Epic to help if they make a sequel.

Well, maybe they could improve it! Like fix all the problems they had with the first one.

It's still possible to do it. The game didn't have THAT many problems, it just suffered from a bit of repretition, and boring events. It was a decent shooter, that just seemed to be lacking a little something. :) I think fans would like it more if they weren't expecting another Halo out of it.

WOW... I wouldn't guess they would make it, especially when the game made it relatively poor....

In the japanese original version you can't even double-jump, vincent is slower, and can't attack while in midair. So actually the original version was even worse than the version you got, just so you can get an idea of how bad the game was here.

I think it sold reasonably well, even if it was purely on the strength of the FFVII brand. It's presumably sold well enough for the game to warrant a sequel, if it is indeed under consideration. If this is also poor though, I'd be surprised if we saw a third.

I did here that SE will make an announcement of another FFVII compilation game this TGS 2007. Any guesses?

I was reading this article on IGN today (it's a day old, I know) which had a lot of cool Crisis Core stuff.

However, the most interested little tidbit is at the very end:

(...)

Imaizumi closed off by confirming once again that there are currently no plans for a FFVII remake. However, he noted that this could change rather quick, alluding to Kitase's comment about how the decision to make Crisis Core took only two days.

IGN

Whether he was joking or not, I think SE is just teasing us. We all know this remake's coming. Right? It just has to.
