What Square needs to do is find out why FF7 did so well and make something new out of that. Not keep making FF7 stuff because they'll know it'll do well.queen_valentine

Well, one of the biggest reasons, and which will be so hard to attain, is the graphical freshness it had back then. Today CGIs are just common place, but with FFVII it wasn't, and the visionary Sakaguchi made that happen back then. Now they need to look for something else that would have a major impact, but I find it hard to happen. Virtual reality is still kinda far away from games... maybe! :P

Hahahaha, yea virtual reality is a no go, for me anyway.

FFVII just had a whole new freshness as far as the series was concerned. Graphics, story, even the way the story was told. Square needs to come up with something truly original. I love it when FFs stay fantasy-related, but that's what they did with XII. So as much as it breaks my heart that XIII looks modern, I think it will be good for the series, to have a change like that.

Yeah, most of the modern ones they've created have failed. Look at Final Fantasy VIII it only sold because VII did so great, but I don't think XIII is going to be that great...I loved Final Fantasy XII, a true master peice, yes people griped about the new battle system however I thought it was truly remarkable, it was like FFXI's system only remade and polished with a few quarks. I loved some of the characters, some were done very well, while others were lacking.....some seemed invisible though....They did do GREAT on detailed work, and especially the enviorments-the music was okay, there were some key songs which stood out from the rest but some of it was just rehashed or falled short. I REALLY loved Sochen Cave Palace, that was a nice retake of the crystal theme. I REALLY want another song much like Pandemonium or The Crystal World from Final Fantasy IX.

Yeah, there was a LOT of detail in the world of XII. One time I decided to take my time in Rabanastre and look at everything. It took me forever, but it was awesome to see how much detail was put into all the backgrounds. There is so much stuff, it really makes you wonder how the PS2 pulled it off, hahahaha. No wonder we waited so long for this game - these guys put in a lot of work.

I too loved the battle system in XII. The gambits reminded me of programming (with if then statements, hahahaha). I love that they did away with random battles (I hate those, I was playing Pokemon and I think that game has the highest random encounter rate EVER). FFXII has some of the best voicework EVER, too. And I really adored the OST. I know I talk about it a lot...sorry, but it's just so good! I do like the Sochen Cave Palace music - although I really don't hear anything related to the crystal theme at all.

We really can't judge XIII just yet, its hardly even near completion and we've seen very little about it since it was first introduced back in E3 06 (or was it 05, :? ) So far, it looks very....actiony (word?) and more real time, SE is slowly but surely going away from the turn based formula in FFs. I'm not saying its bad and it may be a good move to do something different, and we all know SE needs to do something different for the future :P

I remember years back (back when I got my PS2 in 01) there was this big rumor that SE wasn't going to make a FF past XV (15) and it would end there. Do you guys think that rumor (from years ago mind you) would honestly come true? Especially with the way SE is running now, I don't think they would abandon their big franchise.

Yeah this is all true indeed but let s look at the big picture guys. If SE keep bringing out FF games past XV people willl start to assume that FF is their life support and that they can t operate without their flagship RPG. Also people will be tired of FF and began to grow weary of the game and that is not wat u want.

That's why they are constantly changing the battle systems etc. They are trying to make sure we don't get bored of the series. I think you could make FF go on forever by constantly making changes. They are all so different from each other already...

A little throwback to the olden days ala FFIX is good every now and then, but i like the varety and since they are on a remake trip I don't mind them getting into uncharted territory.  Well for me the MMO style of FFXI was new and scary, but it really grew on me.

Hmmm. The new trend seems to be to put a LOT of effort into a game, create a new series then.....summon the legion of mouth foaming sissy spritzing fanboys and doom the world of gaming through thousands of remakes and spin offs! Mwuahahahaaa~

 That sounds pretty much right to me. ;)

I think versus is supposed to be more action-based than XIII. Or maybe it's the other way around. I can't remember! Well, regardless, one of them is more actiony than the other. Which one that is, I can't recall. But you are right to say we cannot judge XIII (or versus) by any means - we don't now much about either of them. We can only assume as to what it will be like.

I remember in the olden days when there was only up to FFVI talking to my sister, "wouldn't it just be crazy if FF got to like X or XI? I just don't see that happening!" We always talked about that and well....I am still playing XII and waiting for XIII. I really don't think it'll just end at XV. I think I'd be crushed if FF ended. That series is what got me started on RPGs and made me love them in the first place.

And I agree with what Yuna said - SE has done a good job changing things up so every FF still feels like a new experience - whether that be setting, battle system, theme, etc.

I think that both of you are pretty much spot on about XII. The gambits were simply logical operands and given that logic is one of my few talents (maybe my only one  ), I felt right at home. :D

By the way Celes, I think that DDS rivals Pokemon in the high encounter stakes. ;)

Definitely not. It's just one of those stories that is designed to attract attention and effectively market whichever FF game was to be released next.

But Blue Dragon isn't made by Square Enix in any way. It was created and designed by Sakaguchi who left Square Enix and is no way a part of them any more. Ahh but we'll get off topic forever debating this. I want the new FFIV DS with 3/4ths new content. I want to see what cecil looks like in battle, new golbez sprites, new spells or magicks they're putting in, and perhaps a COMPLETE whole story, not one that is missing major parts this time. :D So much to wish for, hopefully they pull through.

3/4th new content?  What are you looking for exactly?Yeah the FFIV remake it going to be good, but I'm more pumped about the FFVI remake because they'll have already practiced on IV and V, so they should have all the kinks out by the time it goes gold.

Exactly! Can't wait for the FFVI remake either! :) (You know it's inevitable. :P)

Hmmm. What is the FFVI remake comming out on? You know what might be kinda cool? If they released it on the Wii, just my thought any how.

Andraxal

Gabranth is right. There's another thread for non-SE games.

I still don't have a Wii because I've been waiting for a good reason and FFVI would be more than enough.  I'm thinking that after they retire the GBA games a little more they might just port he FFVI and FFVI GBA Games to the wii.  Actualy i don't see a reasno for them not to do that now.  Because I would guess they aren't really making any more of the carts these days.

I would bet that SNES carts haven't been made for about 10 years. There's already some good stuff on the Wii VC, but Paper Mario and Shining Force are the only good RPGs (as yet). I'm personally hoping for re-releases of Secret of Mana and Terranigma more than any other RPG.

I just figured they'd make one after they re-do FFV on the DS (just like FFIV is getting remade now).

Oh i stopped to do something half way through, so my brain continued, but I didn't actually type it out. I was actually referring to all their GBA games.  I would like a chance to play games like golden sun or the lufia game that came out on the GBA for a nice cheap discount. I would guess they aren't actively producing any of those games either.

While I like talking about BD, Gabranth is right. SE doesn't have anything to do with BD except that Sakaguchi created BD and FF.

Thats the thing though. FF3 didn't even have a great storyline, or memorable characters. The battle system was good, but the job system sucked. It was horrendous. End game all the classes other than like Warrior and Darknight, White Mage and Devout, and the two black mage classes were the only ones really useable because the others were horribly weak. I wanted a bard, but they're so nasty I wouldn't touch'em with a pole. Knights are way to slow to use. There seemed to be a lack of items, and all the good ones were hidden so you couldn't find them without a guide. The majority of the bosses were hard which I liked but some were INCREDIBLY hard, and seemed to jump 15-20levels ahead of you at times, and you had to grind for hours to get strong enough just to pass them, and grinding in that game was not fun at all, nor enjoyable.

I doubt it. It's probably those pics in Crisis Core that have got everybody's expectations up. Again. We had all this when Square released that "PS3" tech demo. And no doubt we'll have it again. Somebody wake me up if they actually release one; Until then I'm going to sleep in Vincent's empty coffin.

Those pics weren't confirmation of a remake. SE has still gone on to say if they're going to or not. In the latest interview they said "no there isn't one in progress at the moment." The closest thing they have said about a remake is that they hinted at it by saying, "we weren't going to make Crisis Core, but that decision took two days to make."

My guess is SE will either wait to see how people will react to seeing that + look to see if Crisis Core's sales are really high, or, they'll have a "suprise" announcement to confirma remakeat TGS this year. Either way, I think we should just take the "wait and see" approach 'cause this idea has been teased with since the PS3 tech demo.

Right. I agree - we have to wait and see! It's pretty much a given, but I don't wanna say anything in fear of jinxing it or just being let down. hahahaha

yes! I'd love to be able to play Secret of Mana etc.! That would be so much more worthwhile than their remakes of games that were already on the PS/ GBA.
