There won't be another unified shader shift. Also, consoles are mucho nerfed this time around compared to last gen. See X1 at 7770 level gpu.

Of course you'll ignore that that your "8yr. cycle" will include $400 for PS+ and $480 for XBL. I did a build with 3 new games for $575. 

In another 5yrs. a $100 GPU upgrade will probably buy you 3x the power of a console. Who cares if you have to upgrade? You only spent $575 and got 3 games, so maybe $700 over a gen. Less than PS4 still.

Son, I was playing games when your dad was screwing your mom, stop lecturing me. I know that can be done, but it's still not common at all, only a fraction of people actually do that because it's not convenient for most people. I'm willing to bet the percentage of gamers that have bluray drives on their PC is in the single digits.

I think this thread fails to take into account that many PC gamers may cannibalize their older PC for parts. When I upgrade I'll be buying a case, power supply, speakers, CPU, graphics card, mother board, 8 or more gigs of RAM, perhaps a new mouse, and that is about it. I'm aiming somewhere in the area of $500 for just that. I'll prolly just reuse my old OS which is Vista, and that's fine with me along with some other parts. Ultimately, I think I would come out pretty well with such a rig until I finish graduate school. It won't be the best rig, but that's not something I can afford right now. You also have to realize that with PC's, if you want to upgrade it you only have to buy a single part. For a console, if you want to upgrade you literally have to buy a whole new console. So yes, when you buy a decent PC rig and pick around for some used parts you will likely spend more or just as much as you would on a console. But over an 8 year period or so you will most likely spend less on games and hardware upgrades (which aren't necessary I suppose, but nice).

The common DC is that you get to "rent" games with PS+, so there is value to it. Sure I agree there's some "value" there, but on PC I'm getting to own the games I buy and Humble Bundle and the like destroy that "value". Look at Humble THQ for example.

I bought ~70 steam games for around $30 recently. I can list what that entails if anybody wants to see what real "value" is.

Agreed, but that hurts their cause, so it's ignored. I bought XP in '03 then did a $40 upgrade to Win7. Transferred it between multiple rigs and MS knows and approved it every time. I have a basic setup from '06 that will take on "next-gen" systems for an extra $125-150. All the games and hardware are there. Just need RAM and GPU upgrade.

Now I recommend getting whatever platform you like best. Every console offers great 1st-party games and plenty of value for the price. Hopefully I can afford every system before it's all said and done. Nothing beats the value and experience I get on PC, though.

Regardless of the gaming PC costing more, if I game only on the PS4, I'll still need to post here (plus other forums) and that means having a non-gaming PC of some sort.

My formula still isn't going to change:

Gaming PC  = Console(s) + Non-Gaming PC/Tablet

If I want to concentrate on gaming only..... then my video card plus a controller/joystick is the only real gaming aspect of my "gaming" PC.

I have a blu-ray drive in my PCs. Ask CyberLink (PowerDVD) for their Blu-ray stats.

You'll also have to pay for the Operating System, sice you're buying that with the PS4 as well.

Yep, plus the PS4 will be sold at about wholesale cost (a little over), the PC you have to buy retail. Going to Sams Club/Costco for wholesale don't work either becuase they can't compete with sales many places have.

Let's see what's on the market for PC hardware by the time the PS4 actually comes out.  Right now you can beat the PS4 for about $600, if not less.  I wouldn't be shocked if we could match or beat it for $400-450 by the time it's released.
