Lock if old. MS has stated that this will be the console for the next 10 years. In this life cycle 1080p may become a thing of the past and 4K may become the norm. This article discusses how 4k gaming will be supported on the X1 and not on the PS4. I don't know how they plan on doing this but it seems interesting. Yes the PS4 will support 4K but only for pictures and video that was recorded in 4K.

"We are delivering a home entertainment system for the next generation and will support 4K for games and entertainment. Well share more details later on 4K content for Xbox One." Xbox Spokesperson.

Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida told Joystiq back in February that PS4 games do not play in 4K, despite confirming that 4K video support will be present.

4K won't become popular for at least 5 to 10 years. By then there'll probably be a successor to the PS4.

1080p became the norm this gen, games still an much lower than 1080p, this gen won't change for consoles, they'll stay the same resolution though out.

Most games don't even run at true 1080 now and 1080p TVs have been mainstream for years. I know I bought my first 1080p LCD about 8 years ago..

Some people around here would probably accept an 8k slideshow, just so they could brag about the visuals here. Sigh.

people still talking like they no more than the engineers that make hardware and software for the x1. If Sony said this we wouldn't hear the end of it but since it's says it's not capable of 4k at all now it's impossible or they won't be real full games.

Wouldn't the memory bandwidth of using ddr3 as video ram be a big problem at that high of a resolution as well? I know on pcs the gap widens in fps at higher resolutions with slower and faster cards.

32MB of ESRAM is not enough frame buffer for 4k and when you join it with 16 ROP even less.

Unless MS have chips to upscale games to that resolution, which is not the same as been 4K and upscale from 1080p or even lower to 4K would be horrible.

It could be 5 yrs until 4k tv's are readily available at normal price levels, current models are anythin up to 4k(;)) more expensive than even the best 1080p models.

More than likely most next gen games will be aiming for 720p in the next few years to push better graphics

I thought about waiting to purchase a 4k TV last year when I was looking to build my theatre room, but I ended up sticking to 1080p. I figured I invest a lot of my time in video games, bluray movies and cable TV which I've amassed quite a bit of; 4k would be pointless for quite some time.

Games have barely hit the surface @ 1080p. The latest dvd format is Blu-ray which is @ 1080p and Cable TV is @ 720p.

Maybe 10 years from now I'll decide to invest in one, but for now I'm loving my Sharp Elite and can't wait to see these next gen consoles.

4 years after last gen PC gamers were mostly playing at 1080p

Console gamers said 1080p didn't matter.

Now, theya re pissed if ALL next gen titles aren't 1080p, saying how 1080p is ESSENTIAL.

In 4 years, PC gamers will be playing at 1440p, 1600p and 4K.

Console gamers will say that 1600p and 4K don't matter......

I think people underestimate the power needed for 4K and decent graphics. The pixel amount is 4 times higher than 1080P. There's absolutely no way anything over PS2 levels of graphics will run at that resolution on either next gen console.

You should be happy that 1080P might finally become the standard.

At such a high res HDMI starts to become a bottleneck. I think 4K and 30 hz is the maximum you'll get with HDMI 1.4 right now. They're currently working on HDMI 2.0 which will support 4K and 60 Hz.

4k gaming will not happen for at least 10 years.

Modern day HD only requires simple equipment that supports it. 4k on the other hand will require a lot more horsepower to play games.

Like the PS4 will do 4k, 4k video that is. So you can watch 4k movies on it, but you cant play 4k games because the difference between watching a movie and playing a game are seperate things. Even a 2500 dollar PC right now cant do 4k gaming, well maybe if you gamed on 12inch screen it could.

So yes if you mean it is the future as in like 10 years in the future or more, you might be right. But the future as in the immediate future? No way.

[QUOTE="Kjranu"]4K won't become popular for at least 5 to 10 years. By then there'll probably be a successor to the PS4. FoxbatAlpha
Do you remember when 1080p just started to become big? It didn't take long and before you know it Walmart is now stocking junk low level LED T.V.'s with 1080p capabilities.

1080p still isnt the standard to do this day. 720 is. Sure there is hardware to support it allover the place, but most games and HD broadcast channels are still in 720 because there is no real world benefit to having 1080p over 720. Going from SD to HD is staggering, but going from 720 to 1080p isnt noticeable really.

And the reason why HD took off so quickly is because of how amazingly better it was. Going from a cd crt to a hd lcd tv was amazing. Going from 1080 to 4k is impressive but it isnt as mind blowing as it was going from sd to hd. But even then it didnt happen as quickly as you think it did. Hell they HD tvs at circut city for years before anyone really knew what hd was, I remember seeing a demo of Antz running on one when it came out on dvd originally it took another 6 or 8 years before 1080p tvs were cheap enough to pile up in walmart.

If you came over to my house and I was watching a movie or playing a game in 720 you wouldnt know the difference if I told you it was 1080p and dont even pretend like you couldnt.

4K won't be popular until the gen after the PS4/Xbox ONE. To be able to play any game at 4K resolution with decent frames you would be expected to be running a SLI or Crossfire set up with 3-4 GPUs with huge ram. So basicly a huge rig with top of the line specs. It wouldn't be the clever thing to do at this moment in time. and considering how much 4k monitors and TV's are its not going to be widely accepted by the general pubic for around 6+ years. So no need wasting resources on creating such a game when only 0.2% of people will be able to play the game and even less will want the game but yeah 4K is the future but no more the future then saying 8K is the future. both are not going to be with us and used heavily this up coming generation and anyone that thinks so is very wishful thinking.

I don't think you understand how resolution works. 4K is 4K, regardless of the screen size. Could be 12 inches could 100 inches. It's still 4K.

And PC's CAN run games at 4K. Dirt 3 can be maxed out at 4K by a single GTX 780. Of course, if you're looking to max out Crysis 3 at 4K 60 FPS, you'll need two more GTX 780's :)

But that still bring the price of a PC that cna do it, today, at below $2,000.

As I've said before, I think the majority of PC gamers will be running at 1440p in 3 years time, with the second larges group at 1080p. 1600p will also start to see a push by then, and some crazy PC gamers will be sporting 4K displays with monster rigs. More power to them.

In 5 years, I think 1440p and 1600p will be most common, 1080p, fairly common, 4K will start to be showed off on gaming forum boards all over the place, like multi-monitor gaming is now, with manufacturers, starting to pay attention. Basically 4K wil be like 1440p is today. A niche market, but niche in a gmaing community of over a 100 million, is still significant.

This Gen (PS3, 360):

- 1080p upscaling, games rendered lower than 1080p natively

- No 4K support

Next Gen (X1, PS4):

- 1080p more common, but some games run lower and upscaled to 1080p

- basic 4k upscaling support, no native 4k resolution games

Next, Next Gen (X2?, PS5):

- some 4K native gaming, many games still upscaled from 1080p

- nothing runs less than 1080p and older tvs will just have downscaled images

After that:

- All native 4K standard

i would rather my system resources be devoted to draw distance, ground clutter, onscreen enemies, frames per second, ai, and about a half dozen things other than resolution. what has resolution ever done to improve gameplay? jack shyt is what.

Actually polycounts really isn't the bottleneck. It's shaders. Any per-pixel work suddenly goes up by a factor of 4. Sure, mesh detail and larger fields of view to accomodate all that detail also contribute, but per pixel effects would really hammer down on a GPU.

The only point if 4K is a 40" as a PC Monitor or an 85" or bigger as a Home Theater Screen, for most practical reasons it's completely pointless. Especially since my 1080p Plasma blows 4k away in picture quality

most laptops are already coming with connectors to output to 4k displays. Ninja-Hippo

That's for movies though. They can't render a game in 4k, a complex game that is.

Technically you can make a 4k game for both xbox and PS4, you just have to cut off a lot of stuff that requires processing power.

4K won't make much of a difference. The human eye can only see but so many ppi. 4K is nothing more than a useless gimmick. 1080p should be fine

I find very hard to believe that you will achieve 60FPS on Crysis 3 max out at 4K dude using 2 780gtx.

Yeah I can't really stand 1080p anymore. 4k is the minimum for me now.

It will take at least 10 years before we see 4K in our household.

No, its all about the content. If the TV production world starts to move to 4K content then TV prices will drop like a stone.

He said 3 :P And it would get close, to be honest. Crysis Warhead running above 4K (roughly 50% higher pixel count)... Back in 2009 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPCJh8tYri0
