Okay, so we have yet another NX leak. This one is also from Reddit, but it seems incredibly legitimate- generally speaking, nothing is said here that is wrong from a technology perspective, and the console, as described, sounds sensible.
The actual Reddit thread is long and massive, and it can be a pain to go through, so I will share some of the most important information here:
- The console is "more powerful than a PS4, but these things are naturally hard to quantify, there are so many things to keep track of. I will say, there is no single metric where the console is weaker than the PS4. At worst it matches it. Development is extremely easy, no obvious bottlenecks on the hardware."
- It is more powerful than the PS4 by any sensible metric. Overall, it is at least slightly more powerful
- 12GB RAM, only 6GB seems to be usable right now
- 1TB embedded HDD, pretty sure this is not the case for the consumer version, though
- Multiple USB 3.0 ports
- The console is not x86
- The console is 'the most powerful console' this developer has worked on
- The console has an HDMI 2.0a port, and 4k output is 'theoretically possible'
- Right now, the console uses discs. Nintendo Optical Discs, 25GB per layer. Dual layer discs are specified, but are unavailable right now
- Games install to the hard disc
- Nintendo has pushed heavily for online, and currently, their online network is on par with the competition in terms of features set
- Nintendo has its own take on Achievements. Apparently they are called 'Missions,' and getting them earns you credit to spend in the eShop (this part is unclear)
- There is no gimmick to the console. Nintendo has lied about the console when they said that it will be 'a new way to play.' According to this developer, the console is the most powerful console ever made. "there is no 'new way to play,' that's just marketing speak. It's a fairly traditional console with some sensible evolutions. From what I can gather about targeted specifications for the retail release, I think Nintendo may have some AR gimmicks, but they are definitely not the central point of the console to the best of my knowledge."
- "If the PS4.5 is real, I think it and the NX should be reasonably matched."
- Connectivity with smart devices seems to be a central point here- the NX can pull your profile off of your smartphone, and also connect directly to them and interact with them as apps, or for second screen gaming.
- There is a mysterious 'EXT' port, but the developer is unclear what it is for.
- Nintendo has far better outreach for third parties this time than they have had before.
- The console's final name has been decided- it's an all new brand, and apparently, while 'Nintendo' is part of the name, it can be ignored- so a lot like the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS names. The name is 'far more marketable' than Wii U.
- The OS seems to be using 6GB of RAM right now. It seems to be mostly fast, and fully multitaskable.
- The console is definitely due out by the end of this year.
- A reveal of the console is planned in Q2 2016.
- No backwards compatibility with either Wii U or Nintendo 3DS (at least not on a native hardware level).
- The console supports at least two separate kinds of controllers- a standard controller, mostly like a Wii U Pro, but with analog triggers, and scroll wheels for bumpers, and another controller, with an embedded touchscreen. The touchscreen controller looks like a stretched Wii U Pro with a screen in the center. The screen is capacitive and 1080p.
- Both controllers have localized haptic feedback (i.e. if you are playing a shooter and you are shot from the left, only the left side of the controller rumbles)
- The screen is not freeform. It is a simple rectangular screen.
- The second screen seems to be very de-emphasized. It seems to exist only for Remote Play, and for inventory and UI purposes
- "There is nothing in the documentation that seems to indicate that one is more default than the other."
- Up to eight controllers can be paired with the console at a time.
- As of right now, there is no news of the handheld. If it exists, Nintendo has not shown it off to this specific developer. One is planned, but nothing concrete on it actually exists.
So... that's that. It seems to be fairly grounded, and it also corroborates a lot of other leaks. It also sounds absolutely perfect- and with this being the third leak to ultimately reinforce a lot of these same points, it sounds like Nintendo's next console might actually be one that brings them back in the game!
What do you all think?
