I would just like to point out that "missions" is exactly what Miitomo launched with today. Could corroborate this, and if they're tying achievements into actual rewards, fucking ace.

Okay, yes, this is a big one- the leak is a day or so old, and apparently, it predicted 'Missions' (Nintendo's version of Achievements) which were in Miitomo, which launched today.

I don't know if the leak is entirely accurate or not, but I think that whoever did this had some kind of insider knowledge for sure.

There's only two Polaris ASICs to "semi-customise" for your SoC i.e. Polaris 10 and 11..

So how many "Leaks" have we had that says that the NX is more powerful than the PS4, and is easy to develop games for? 2? 3? Can't be TOO far off from the truth, if multiple sources are saying the same thing.

Looks like our wishes have come true. Nintendo system with 3rd party multiplats. OH YEAAAAH!!!!

Also,

  • The console has an HDMI 2.0a port, and 4k output is 'theoretically possible'

4K output as in 4K games? If that's true, then it IS the Ultra Nintendo (UNES) (I TOLD YOU GUYS! HAHAHAHA. lol)

Nobody is going to be releasing consoles that can render games in 4K natively anytime soon. We will have to wait until the NX 2.0 , PS5.0 and XB2.0 for that.

AMD promises 5x the performance per watt in 2018, so I expect 4K consoles in 2019 - 2020.

For mainstream, 5X is for sustained 4K/VR gaming not minimum hardware for 4K/VR gaming.

High end PC gaming is above the mainstream curve.

For economic of scale, it's cheaper for AMD to mass produce Polaris for all their customers e.g. Apple, Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft

Can you see any of three utilizing GDDR5X memory?

GDDR5X gives more bang per buck i.e. PCB can be made cheaper e.g.

128 bit GDDR5X ~= 256 bit GDDR5

256 bit GDDR5X ~= 512 bit GDDR5

Keep in mind 128bit bus vs storage density limits with GDDR5/GDDR5X.

These rumors are all over the map. Think people are just spit-wadding for hits. When was Reddit taken so seriously. Most time I go there it's just horrible efforts to make memes by putting captions on pictures.

Hmmm, we may have reason to buy into this one.

They didn't have to, Nintendo very kindly told everyone a year ago.

I still believe we will see a new handheld soon, Nintendo's priorities right now is regaining the console base it lost from last gen (I don't mean just casual gamers).

It may have minor issues since PS4 games interfaces the GPU on top of Radeon driver which is not the same as X86 code interfacing with the CPU via X86 ISA e.g. Mantle style bugs.

Besides the CPU, PS4 games interfaces the GPU on top of Radeon driver. The gamecode is contained within a protected sandbox i.e. game programmer lacks the real control power to access protected memory areas i.e. no access to ring -1, 0, 1 level instructions..

PS4 was designed to multitask without crashing the entire system. The OS has to manage resource sharing between apps and games with a resource availability guarantee e.g. 7 CPUs available for game programmer..

PS4's OS is based from FreeBSD with Radeon HD driver. PS4 is effectively Sony's Steam machine with Radeon GPU, Mantle and resource availability guarantee.

So, probably not gonna come with GDDR5X. Well, hopefully the PS4K comes with more ram for game development.

An additional 1 - 2GB's on top of the 4.5 - 5GB's currently available for game development would definitely help.

Not only would I like to see Nintendo make a pure console with no gimmicks but I would actually buy it!

The stupid ass gimmicks they put on the machines annoys me so I stayed away.

You are not going deliver real 2X if the memory bandwidth is not upgraded with the GPU i.e. you are going to run into The Order's style 1920x1080p MSAA 4X problem even with higher GPU with the same 176 GB/s memory bandwidth. If required, system programmers can always fake the behavior for legacy APIs. If legacy API requires timing behavior emulation then this API is badly written if it requires old Windows style legacy bloat.

The whole point with Mantle and DirectX12 is to remove DirectX11's legacy bloat and support for backwards and forward compatible. Hopefully, PS4's API resembles like DirectX12 or Mantle. PS4's low level API is still an API located on top of Radeon driver.

I'm sure Sony knows about The Order's MSAA 4X with 1920x1080p memory bandwidth problem.

What's the best possible scenario for the PS4K spec wise if it comes out this year at a price of $399.99 - $449.99?

If you could please layout best possible CPU, Ram and GPU combo. What would be the most practical choices?

Thanks

@Sushiglutton: I never complained about the gimmicks, unlike others i knew the Wii was a necessary gimmick. If Nintendo creates a normal console it won't sell, not enough different about it to justify a purchas. What they need is a GOOD gimmick that makes sense and adds to the gameplay. The Wii did that, the WiiU did not. The WiiUs second screen was pointless and added little to the experience. They also need to stop underpowering their systems.

AMD referred to PC's minimum VR spec i.e.

Video Card: AMD R9-290 (40 CU, 947Mhz, 320 GB/s) or equivalent

CPU: Intel i5-6400 (2.7Ghz base, quad core) or Intel Coreâ„¢ i5-4590 (3.3 Ghz base, quad core) or equivalent

Memory: 8GB+ RAM

PS4K v1

CPU: AMD ZEN at 2.8 Ghz quad-core/8 threads

GPU: AMD Polaris 10, 36 CU at 800Mhz (R9-290X like),

Memory: 256 bit 8 GB GDDR5X with 352 GB/s (2X over PS4's 176GB/s)

PS4K v2

CPU: AMD ZEN at 2.8 Ghz quad-core/8 threads

GPU: AMD Polaris 11, 18 CU at 1600 Mhz, effectively similar to Polaris 10 36 CU at 800Mhz.

Memory: 256 bit 8 GB GDDR5X with 352 GB/s (2X over PS4's 176GB/s)

AMD ZEN scales to 32 core/64 threads per socket hence large SKU number potential. Can competes against Intel Xeon Phi.

NX

CPU: AMD K12 ARM Cortex A57 8 cores/8 threads

GPU: AMD Polaris 11, 18 CU at 800 Mhz (R9-270X like). Nintendo could overclock to 100 watts and reach PS4K v2.

Memory: ??? bit 8 GB GDDR5X with ??? GB/s

PC's Polaris 10 scaled to 300 watts would be a monster.

Polaris 11 = 40 watts ~= R9-270X

Nice!!! I was wondering if Zen would be a possible alternative to Jaguar/Puma.

I was reading an article about AMD Zen and found the quote below interesting.

"One other exciting tidbit is that AMD is working on a Zen based APU with on-package stacked high bandwidth memory that’s planned for release in 2017. However, whether all Zen based APUs & future iterations will feature HBM is not something that were able to confirm.Read more: http://wccftech.com/amd-zen-launch-q4-2016/#ixzz44Ym8eKB5"

What's the point of being more powerful than a 2013 system when ps4k is around the corner? I mean, its better than being stuck with Xbone specs but if their console is here to stay for 5-7 years, that's mediocre specs. Imagine playing with PS4 like specs in 2021 lolz

If this rumour is true, which I doubt it is, if it's not x86 like the other two consoles it don't matter if it's more powerful because its going to get shitty third party ports, it will end up being an exclusives only box again.

I kinda wish Sony had chosen the ARM chip though, bit short sighted to use x86 chips as they are much less efficient in the long run, especially in a console where TDP is the number one priority. More likely Nintendo have chosen PPC again if they want backwards compatibility without any major issues.

The performance on those ARM chips is still up to debate, all we know that they have better IPC than jag(not that it's a huge accomplishment)

Bah. When will the torture end, Nintendo? Just reveal your shit already so we can all begin to cope with the sudden rush of...disappointment.

Calling their version of achievement "missions" seems to add up. Miitomo has missions for the game.

Well if their plan is to stop selling the Wii-U then that's a major **** up, then again I suppose they don't have any third party publishers left to piss off I suppose.

Why do people care about new gaming hardware launch, on an enthusiast forum? I wonder why.

Or a module that is sold separately but enables BC for NX (sort of like the Master Pak for Genesis?)

They can keep selling Wii U for whatever it is worth, I guess.

If they are pulling a no-gimmick console, then making something even 2x the power of a PS4 for like $300 is not unreasonable. I would assume $400, but this is Nintendo we're talking about. The PS4 was a bit weak by even 2013 standards when it launched. Making a console 2x more powerful than it was totally possible for like $600-700 launch price. It's not unreasonable to think that price has come down by half in 3 years. Especially with mobile graphic processing being such a big thing right now.

@Random_Matt: You're overestimating the CPUs in current consoles. ARM can beat them easily.

For Geekbench 3 Multithread

A4-5000 quad core Jaguar at 1.5Ghz ~= Samsung Exynos 5420 Octa (quad core Cortex A15 at 1.9 Ghz, quad core Cortex-A7 at 1.3Ghz).

The NX rumors are pointless though there's a thousand at this point. Why not just wait for official info.
