It may have minor issues since PS4 games interfaces the GPU on top of Radeon driver which is not the same as X86 code interfacing with the CPU via X86 ISA.
Besides the CPU, PS4 games interfaces the GPU on top of Radeon driver. The gamecode is contained within a protected sandbox i.e. game programmer lacks the real control power to access protected memory areas.
PS4 was designed to multitask without crashing the entire system. The OS has to manage resource sharing between apps and games.
PS4's OS is based from FreeBSD with Radeon HD driver. PS4 effectively Sony's Steam machine with Radeon GPU and Mantle.
So, probably not gonna come with GDDR5X. Well, hopefully the PS4K comes with more ram for game development.
An additional 1 - 2GB's on top of the 4.5 - 5GB's currently available for game development would definitely help.
You are not going deliver real 2X if the memory bandwidth.
What's the best possible scenario for the PS4K spec wise if it comes out this year at a price of $399.99 - $449.99?
If you could please layout best possible CPU, Ram and GPU combo. What would be the most practical choices?
Thanks
AMD referred to PC's minimum VR spec i.e.
Video Card: AMD R9-290 (40 CU, 947Mhz, 320 GB/s) or equivalent
CPU: Intel i5-6400 (2.7Ghz base, quad core) or Intel Coreâ„¢ i5-4590 (3.3 Ghz base, quad core) or equivalent
Memory: 8GB+ RAM
PS4K v1
CPU: AMD ZEN at 2.8 Ghz quad-core/8 threads
GPU: AMD Polaris 10, 36 CU at 800Mhz (R9-290X like),
Memory: 256 bit 8 GB GDDR5X with 352 GB/s (2X over PS4's 176GB/s)
PS4K v2
CPU: AMD ZEN at 2.8 Ghz quad-core/8 threads
GPU: AMD Polaris 11, 18 CU at 1600 Mhz, effectively similar to Polaris 10 36 CU at 800Mhz.
Memory: 256 bit 8 GB GDDR5X with 352 GB/s (2X over PS4's 176GB/s)
AMD ZEN scales to 32 core/64 threads per socket hence large SKU number potential. Can competes against Intel Xeon Phi.
NX
CPU: AMD K12 ARM Cortex A57 8 cores/8 threads
GPU: AMD Polaris 11, 18 CU at 800 Mhz (R9-270X like). Nintendo could overclock to 100 watts and reach PS4K v2.
Memory: ??? bit 8 GB GDDR5X with ??? GB/s
PC's Polaris 10 scaled to 300 watts would be a monster.
Polaris 11 = 40 watts ~= R9-270X
