Anyone thought PS3 would still be in last place 6 years into this gen.

This is surprising to me. I never thought this would happen but Sony has not done well this gen compared with previous generations.

They lost all the money they made on the PS2 on the PS3.

PS3 is hacked and will likely be exploited.

PSN is not profitable.

What can Sony do to change things around.

Start releasing casual games I guess. I mean they are fine if you ask me, but if they want the big bucks, casual gaming is where it is at at the moment.

I also never thought it would have the crazy good lineup it had this year. But you can keep talking about sales if you like. :)

nearly all of them were sold at a profit loss from what I understand. It was only the end of last year where they started becoming profitable on hardware.

I find Sonys biggest problem is they keep on promising and not delivering. Take PSN+ for example. They gave out a list of functions and asked who would pay for those. Then when PSN+ comes out it's just a discount service. Or Home, They launch it saying game launching and whatever else is going to be changed forever. Then they started removing features instead of adding them and the game launching was useless because most people never even got Home. Why not just build this feature straight into the XMB?

They keep on dividing their attention among 100 different things and never finishing 1 thing that could turn into something great. PSN+ was supposed to have cloud saving, x game chat and a slew of other functions. I haven't seen an update on the service since inception.

As for the hacking. Homebrew on the console will HELP it's sales, not hinder them. As long as pirates remain unable to launch illegal games Sony will be more then fine and even if they figure it out Sony will still be fine.

To be quite honest, with all the missteps Sony has made with PS3 and PSP, I'm surprised they're still in the game. The only thing that has kept Sony in it is their mindshare from the PS2 and PSOne days.

A small loss to get their product on the market. Once it's there all they have to do is generate content and putting out accessories. Why do you think Sony has so great of 1st party game support? They needed to make money somehow.

How do you know that? I'm not saying is untrue but was there an official statement from Sony or something? Btw ps2 is still selling like crazy.

PS3 is hacked and will likely be exploited.jimmypsn

360 was hacked from year one and wii well even worse, there are even freaking emulators for that thing today. Actually ps3 hold pretty good for 5 years, better than the competition.

PSN is not profitable.jimmypsn

So what? Is not that costly to maintain that service anyway.

PSN+ is a good start. I guess Sony realizes that they need additional revenue somewhere anywhere. That's where PSN+ came to be.

Hey I have a question, do you ever say something positive about the PS3? All I hear you say is either against PS3, or neutral PS3. Never positive :O

On topic, maybe by this year's end PS3 will be in second place. But who knows. People really switched from PS2 to Xbox that quick. But at least their last place is 3rd place. Hehe xD Bronze metal ftw?

Unfortunate that Sony is in last place, but you'ld hardly know by how many awesome games they seem to keep pushing out. Even then, I doubt anyone at Sony is really hurting for cash lately.

my only prediction before this generation started was that the 360 would be americas choice and ps3 would continue to be japans choice. nobody expected the success of the wii, but as for hd consoles i was pretty much right on.

this is all silly talk though. cows dont care about sales until the ps3 takes over 2nd place if that ever happens.

Wasdie

So that's why Nintendo has all those 1st Party games that generate tons more money and sales :P

Is PS3 good? Absolutely but lets all be serious here its been a financial disaster. They probably haven't even gotten out of the red yet from all the start ups and losses that occurred with the PS3. 5 Years in and they just now talking about not losing money on PSN. How many years did they sell the PS3 at a loss? Wasn't it like 2-3 years in that they had already claimed that they had lost more with the PS3 then the PS2 had ever made? I don't own stock in sony so I could care less about the situation but they sure aren't in a lucrative situation like Nintendo or hell even making hand over fist like XBL.

Charge for online, start releasing casual crap and destroy their first party I guess. In other words contribute their share to destroy console gaming since that's apparently what "gamers" like.

Release a 600 dollar system, Act like every one whorships them and will buy a system no matter what, start removing things in a mad dash to bring down the price of the system, have no more A,AA,AAA then their competitors, maintain 3rd place throughout the generation, Continue to make little to no profit year after year compared to their competitors in the video game arena.

Like the games,so what? The problem was the price,600 was steep.Even if the devs didnt know how to make games on PS3, a price of 499 or 549 at Launch would def. sell Millions

They are last, true, but they have sold more PS3s per year than 360. Plus all this time they had (and still have) PS2 and PSP. And the hit they took on hardware, apart from being partially covered by software sales, has a lot of ongoing consequences, like the outcome of the BluRay vs HDDVD battle. Sony probably stands to gain from that as a partner in the BluRay consortium. Didn't MS lose anything from the support of a now dead technology (HDDVD)? How about all those RROD consoles they had to replace under their extended warranty (I think it was 3 years ?).

KiZZo1

u have to think about the bigger picture and thats MS is a vastly larger company and has beeen making profit on their consoles for a long time. plus their exclusives sell much more. Sony isnt in the best situation right nao and it isnt just cause their ps3. their tv's suck now compared to when they were in their prime in the tv market

but those are things that happened 4 years ago and their arrogance and other stuff are things only being discussed in forums between core gamers, the average joe has no idea about this stuff while kuraimen is talking about current trends. The Wii was going to be a hit even if the PS3 launched at 300 dollars and Kinect is selling millions while Sony's struggling even though for 2011 they have the strongest line-up of games this gen. Now is all about casual games, MS only has GeoW for the end of the year yet their console is selling even more than the Wii. Why? Marketing and casual gaming.

No, I am surprised Sony came to within 3 million units of the 360 this year. Think back to 2006. Blu Ray wasnt proven. The PS3 was 600 bucks. Microsoft was on the prowl stealing every PS3 exclusive possible. To be honest, the PS3 had the cards stacked against it. If Blu Ray lost to HDDVD I'm not sure if we'd still be here talking about the PS3.

For one, it hasn't been six years into the gen. And actually when I saw the six hundred dollar price tag, the lack of good exclusives and how exceptional the Wii was selling, I did expect the PS3 to be in third for quite some time. But it seems it might not be in that place for long.

Yes it has if you could the first system out in 2004 then yes it is six years into the Gen. But the PS3 has only been out for 4 years.

No way, not with Kinect out for the 360. The casuals are eating it up, and will continue to do so when there are more Kinect games out.

And the 360?

Release a $500 system. KNOW that everyone worships them and will buy a system and allow you to price gouge them into eternity. %30/40 system failure rates across the board for the first two years. Blow your software load in the first 3 years and leave your community with tired sequels and rehashes with nothing original or inspired in-sight. Continue to make profit year after year by charging $15 dollars for map packs and becoming the most stagnant piece of washed-up technology on the planet.

People bought Kinect, a lot of people, but it didn't move consoles like people expected. It seems a lot of the people who were buying Kinect were already 360 owners, not all new customers buying the bundle.

MS announced 50 million consoles sold this month, and last quarter the 360 sales were 44.6 million, which means it sold 5.4 million for the Oct - Dec quarter. Which was about the same it sold last year (5.2).

I don't think Kinect is making that big of an impact, console sales wise anyway.

[QUOTE="kuraimen"]Charge for online, start releasing casual crap and destroy their first party I guess. In other words contribute their share to destroy console gaming since that's apparently what "gamers" like.Game-fu

It wasn't 500. Core was 300. Pro was 400. MS doesn't charge for map maps. You're think Activision. Sequels and rehashes are common on all systems. Look at PS3 2011 lineup. almost all sequels.

The wild card this gen was the Wii. Nintendo took a big risk doing something so different, releasing a comparitively underpowered system with a new control scheme. It worked and the Wii has been a massive sucess, but it could easilly have gone the other way. If Wii Sports hadn't proved to be such a "Killer App" to the mainstream crowd back at launch the Wii could have flopped - we could even be talking about Nintendo as a 3rd Party now.

If the Wii had tanked I think the PS3 would have passed the 360 by now, as alot of PS2 owners (such as myself) who bought the Wii as their main console this gen, would have stuck with Sony.

every time i see your picture, i know something bad about the ps3 is being said. quit hating already! i'm sorry that the ps3 has the best games and hardware out of any console, i really am. if you hate the ps3 so much, try and not to go into every ps3 thread, because that's where i usually see your posts.

Yet you don't complain about users who only bash the 360? :o

360 was hacked from year one and wii well even worse, there are even freaking emulators for that thing today. Actually ps3 hold pretty good for 5 years, better than the competition.

So what? Is not that costly to maintain that service anyway.

actually the 360 took a year or so, so did the Wii...they weren't hacked from year one.

sorry, the 360 had stuff out for it in jan-feb, not even 5 months after it came out.
