With next-gen consoles looming up ahead, I think it's time for some wild speculation! - http://www.computerandvideogames.com/326289/xbox-720-to-arrive-in-2012-edge-source/

Personally, I think launch titles will just look like the best games on PC, or slightly better.

No, and honestly, I don't want a giant leap. Let consoles be consoles, no matter what, they will never surpass the PC in pure technical power, but they don't have to either. Just focus on making games that play good, not look good.

From the rumors coming out, it doesn't look like it. I'm betting the Wii U will be indicative of the power of both Microsoft and Sony's consoles.

i'm hoping it looks much better than 360 and PS3 (if that's possible) because Nintendo's gonna have "future-proof" it's system if it hopes to make a big impact...

Yes, but people need to keep expectations low; it's unlikely it will match the best PC in raw power, even at launch. Will probably be 2011 equivalent gaming rig if we're lucky (assuming Xbox 720 in 2013) which will get much better results due to it being a closed system.

xbox 720 will not arrive in 2012, Halo 4 is confirmed for 360, so that rumor has been killed

Also will have a infinite leap from PS3/360, since will use 8 years ahead hardware of course

If we judge by 360, they will have 10x stronger than 2011 hardware, better than the best on PC at the time of release in holiday 2013, that is two years from now

It wont be at all imo, PS4 and 720 will use hardware 2 years after WiiU and probably high end and not mid range like WiiU

If the next-gen consoles will do real 1080p resolution with AA and AF to boot? Sure. It'll do a 1080p TV justice to have consoles that can max it out instead of mere upscaling.

I hope so. They should be able to at least run PC games for a while. If not than either PC will pull so far ahead that there wont be console versions or PC will be hindered by the consoles. Which do you think it more likely to happen? Follow the money for your answer.

id rather see dev's chase new gameplay and gameplay elements than graphics to be brutally honest skyrim is refreshing in relation to playing oblivion because its more refined and adds a lot to the base game.Wish more dev's would do this instead of year on year releases.

Nope.

Next Generation To Arrive In 2012

Ubisoft Montreal currently working with next-generation Xbox devkits; major Sony studio shifts focus to new PlayStation.

Ubisoft Montreal is hard at work on 'target boxes' based on the intended specifications of Microsoft's Xbox 360 successor, according to an Edge source. Delivery of the first iteration of genuine devkits, running custom hardware, is expected to reach studios before Christmas, and all signs point to the finalised console arriving at retail in late 2012.

Anyway, I doubt we'll see that big of an upgrade like we're used to. It's just too expensive.

I don't think the graphical leap will be huge but lets hope that Consoles can at least do full HD next gen. Thats my biggest grip going from my PC to my consoles. The SubHD blur and fuzz and terrible video scaling kills console game for me.

i dont know what to expect. in these times espcially i cant see any of the 3 preparing to shoulder 150-200 losses per unit sold at launch so i dont think we will see the same kind of jump we saw this gen (well unless someone is stupid enough to try and sell a 700 or 800 console :P). the other thing is the market at large does not give a crap about high end graphics. COD still sells by the ton and parts of that game are decrepid. most multiplat games (including skyrim) are out of date..using old tech. bethesda are still quite happy with its performance (good game too). then there is the cost of deveopment. if they do go the usual 10X can the industry sustain 80-200 million budgets? do we even want budgets to go that high...that can cause some nasty problems. so there are many reasons not to go with high end horsepower. any gap between console and PC hardware is also irrelevant. the likes of epic and bethesda will continue to use consoles as the benchmark (which is unfortunate but there ya go). some devs will play with the extra features and umph PC hardware provides. this gen MS and sony tried to use it as a goal post and it has done them 0 favours. so i dont think its going to be used as the yardstick next gen. so i cant really think why they would go with high end hardware either. in saying that i think all 3 consoles will support all the latest and greatest tech. upgraded shaders, the latest DX11 (possibly more 10.1 type feature set for the wiiu though its hard to say) and openGL and so on. but i dont think anyone is going to also go for out and out horsepower. i think the focus then will turn more to exclusives and services rather than perty graphics. but its hard to say...we could be surprised.

sorta...not really. I do not expect 1080p and 60fps standard, that's not really gonna happen. Perhaps some DX10 or 11 features, but again you'd have to start cutting corners

How about there better be one. I think games look ok now for what consoles are but are starting to look really dated. Console makers need to add enough hardware for AA. Jaggies break any graphics. They need to be eliminated by having power to remove them or run a higher resolution like 1080p.

I expect a similar graphics boost to this gen by dragging out this gen 8-9 years you they can give as much of graphics boost as xbox to xbox 360 while keeping the cost of the console low. GTX 570 would be to power hungry and expensive to use in a lost cost(speaking about the cost to micrsoft and sony not retial cost which the ps3 and 360 where sold at a loss for many years) console now but in 2-3 years thats now midrange hardware in terms of cost and you can get the same perforance using alot less power and generation less heat all in a smaller form factor.

Crysis 3 probably. Crytek are console fanboys now anyway. Witcher 2? Hell naw. CD Projekt RED loves PC and it'll always be their main platform.

2 years? Way too soon, especially when we still haven't gotten the expansion pack(s) for TW2.

Jaggies be gone.... and I would also like 30+ fps at all times..... and no pop-in, with much farther draw distances. I'd be perfectly happy with that.

But devs won't follow that.... they'll pull a "GTAIV"

I hope its the biggest ever so much so that it will alienate all but the biggest developers who can afford to lose 10s if not 100s of millions for trying something new.

Next gen consoles MUST play games at 1080 and 60fps with no drops and rid themselves of the notion of motion.

As long as the games at launch come out looking exactly like Gears 3

and Uncharted 3

Then, I'll be extremely happy.

All Next Generation games should start exactly at this level of graphics to be able to qualify as "next-gen".

Remember, devs dont use the maximun power of consoles the first years. But nonetheless, graphics should be able to equal this level effortlessly.

But I'm definitely expecting more games running at 1080p @ 60fps.

depends on what one constitures as "graphical". I think there will be some advancements, but nowhere near a "leap". I think and hope that the next gen of consoles will have a bigger focus on the different physics parts of gameworlds, more complex engines, not just better looking.

And I hope that the consoles will finally have something akin to 60 fps native, on 1080p.

so ofcourse there will be some, it would be near impossible to even make hardware that would not perform better then those 7 year old husks we know, I just hope that they will turn focus away from pure graphics, to the beforementioned physics aspects (lights shadows, smoke, you know, anything not purely graphical. They require a whole lot more processing power to make tho, so I Hope for the best :\ oh and better ai would not really hurt either ya know -.-

You guys are too pessimistic on these boards or maybe you are all pc elitest who can't stand the thought of a powerful games console. Every generation there has been a leap in visuals and next gen will be no different. As much as you say consoles are becoming casual there still needs to be a technical leap seen by them to think its a true next gen system. And if the rumored specs for Xbox loop/infinity are real then it won't be weak at all. A hex core CPU @3.8ghz, duel state of the art AMD gpu, 2 gigs of DDR3(I suspect that's system ram but there should be another 2gigs of fast DDR5 or XDR2. Add that together with good size HDD, high storage optical disc, and enhanced kinect 2.0 all in a closed environment that will be easy to dev for and it will hold its own for years against pc.

I expect game that look as good as Crysis 2 at the very least.
