Alienation of the fans and business partners. Hell, to this day, people are still pissed at Nintendo for letting Rare go as much as hate MS. They can (and will if Sony buys Atlus) scrap it even if it is far in development. It's happened before (see: Gauntlet on DS)

Alienating fans? You mean like they did by putting mainline SMT on handhelds?

Alienating fans? You mean like they did by putting mainline SMT on handhelds?

GD1551

What does it matter how much the system sells? Mainline SMT were console games no? Going to handheld lowers the standard and alienates fans. As for people wanting to play Shin Megami X FE wouldn't they rather atlus go to a company that would fully back them like Sony?

GD1551

and Nintendo wouldn't fully back up Atlus?

and 31.09 million people is....a lot of people and if you were one of them you wouldn't be missing out on an Atlus game. Plus, if Atlus was to go to Nintendo they wouldn't just be restricted to Handhelds (though they probably would just develop for the 3DS because it's incredibly popular in Japan right now) they also have the WiiU, which is a good enough system for them to develop some more main line stuff for it, and Nintendo needs that kind of stuff pretty bad now, So they wouldn't be alienating fans.

(also Atlus has a long history of Developing Games for Nintendo Handhelds so they would be also be right at home, still doesn't stop me from thinking they would benifit from Capcom more.)

If Nintendo buys Atlus, a lot less people will experience their games, except the handhelds, the Wii U install base is really bad.

If Sony buys it, they probably just shift ongoing projects to ps3/ps4 and handheld projects to VITA.

The good things would be, as they would become a 1st party, Sony would do what they do with their other studios, throw them money and say "do whatever you want and take your time as long as it has quality!".

With Nintendo already owning Monolith Soft, Dragonquest games are pretty much Nintendo only titles and Mistwalkers has been making Nintendo only titles. If they got Atlus it would be hard for any company to complete when it came to Jrpgs.

Pokemon, Atlus, Monolith Soft, Mario RPGs that would be one heck of a JRPG stable.

In truth that may be why they don't buy them. Nintendo already has such a huge part of the market, that they may think there money would be better spent somewhere else.

Not saying there wouldn't be a place for Atlus for those consoles, just saying the same goes for Nintendo too.

No one will get Alienated here, the only ones who would get Alienated are themselves (the so called "fans").

I keep tossing the idea of MS purchasing Atlus around in my head.  I can't imagine a scenario where it would be a good marriage for either of them, but likewise can't imagine a situation that helps the Xbox brand overseas more than this could.

My money is on Namco.

Basinboy
Or, this would make the situation even worse, as no doubt MS will fvck this up royally, 100% sure.

Here is how i see it.

Great-Sony (Good hardware to focus on, creative freedom, Vita needs help because its not really giving the 3DS any competition)

Good-Namco, Konami, Capcom (Multiplatform games, i dont foresee any real problems if the franchises go to these publishers)

Bad-Square Enix (I'm afraid they would make low quality mobile Persona/SMT games, and/or may not even localize them)

Worst-Nintendo (Worst hardware, region locked, may not localize, no good would come from this)

nintendoboy16

Nevermind the fact that Sony will cancel projects that Atlus' niche audience on other systems if they get bought by them? Like MS did Rare and any future Nintendo games of theirs? SMT X FE, remember that announcement?

3DS has plenty of games and support from every japanese publisher/developer outside of Sony, they will be ok if Sony cancels 1 game. Vita desperately needs Atlus, then Vita may actually become a little bit of competition, thats good for everyone.

The Vita will never be competition for the 3DS. The 3DS is too far ahead in userbase. 31 Million vs 4 Million with the gap growing.

As for support. The Vita already has much better support in Japan then it does in the West.

SMTXFE isn't on the 3DS it is for the Wii U which doesn't have much support from Japanese developers or western developers.

I said a little bit, im not under any kind of illusion that the Vita is a legit threat to the 3DS. But if Sony buys Atlus i think the Vita would do well enough to annoy Nintendo and keep them from getting lazy.

Did the Wii get great support from Japanese devs or mostly Nintendo alone? Sony first parties can't sell Vita, Nintendo's can sell Wii U with their first parties alone. Does it needs SMTXFE, a game that possibly comes after 2014. After that year, Wii U probably picks up the pace already. Do they need that game? I'd say no.

Aside from Shin Megami Tensei and its spin offs, Atlus has little to offer.

(And there has been no real evolution in SMT series... Persona now seem to be bigger than the main SMT titles)

if persona 5 went only to the wii-u, the wii-u would do crazy business. Persona 4 golden pushed vita sales by 150% selling 30,000 vita's the week it came out. So yeah alot of people including myself would buy a Wii-U for one atlus game.

All the candidates sound fine IMO(except maybe Nintendo, because they seem completely out of touch with gamers and it wouldnt surprise me if they did something stupid), they should remain good as long as someone like EA, MS, or Ubisoft dont buy them

Thats why Sony would be best choice. No region locks, localization facilities (through Japan Studio) and global distribution. (And Atlus studio could retain its creative freedom)

No, being that Sony, like Nintendo is first party, they are NOT the best choice, considering Atlus has a base on other platforms. Seriously, are cows just avoiding this? Even I said Nintendo isn't the best choice for similar reasons, plus another drama that may be worse than what happened before the Wii U released (which I refer to alot, but it's the definitive example).

Atlus NEEDS to remain multiplat, they can't pick one first party's side.

How would that be good? Persona 5 on Wii U  would mean an instant low sales numbers.

And the biggest IPs Atlus have have a history of being on playstation consoles.

Atlus bought by Nintendo = dead Atlus with no games seing its way out of Japan

Nintendo is struggling with Wii U, im sure they dont want the expense of buying a studio now.

Thats why Sony would be best choice. No region locks, localization facilities (through Japan Studio) and global distribution. (And Atlus studio could retain its creative freedom)

ManatuBeard

No, being that Sony, like Nintendo is first party, they are NOT the best choice, considering Atlus has a base on other platforms. Seriously, are cows just avoiding this?

How would that be good? Persona 5 on Wii U  would mean an instant low sales numbers.

And the biggest IPs Atlus have have a history of being on playstation consoles.

Atlus bought by Nintendo = dead Atlus with no games seing its way out of Japan

Nintendo is struggling with Wii U, im sure they dont want the expense of buying a studio now.

Chris Williams just got done saying even Playstation Vita saw an 150% sale increase when Persona 4 Golden was released.

Missed the posts where I said even Nintendo is a bad idea? Like I said in my edit, Atlus NEEDS to be multiplat. I don't care if Sony has "more freedoms" than Nintendo, they have a base that's expanded on multiple platforms NOT Sony, hence why being bought by them is ALSO a bad idea, because they'll be alienating more of their fans and Sony will pull a Microsoft/Rare to a game Nintendo and Atlus fans are respectively looking forward to.

Fvck, I didn't even thought about that.

Nintendo is a worst case scenario, indeed.

Yet, Atlus region locked Persona 4 Arena.

I hope they learned from the horrible backlash that followed.

Still, that's one game. If Nintendo gets them they will region lock everything by default.

But I want my Fire Emblem x Shin Megami Tensei.

True. However, the game you spoke of are developed by both Atlus and Intelligence system(which belongs to Nintendo), it is a tie, and we may even have the game on both platform other than MS.

And I would say becoming Nintendo's means death to Persona in the same sense as you're speaking. Persona has always been on Sony systems.

Dude, Fire Emblem is owned by Nintendo. Why would Nintendo want their IP on RIVAL systems and why would Sony want a first party developer that still has links to THEIR RIVALS? There's a reason Microsoft ordered Rare to cancel any post-Star Fox Adventures Nintendo console games.

You are thinking from a seller perspective. Buyers dont give a fuq if the seller wants to keep doing multiplat or not, they want the IPs and the studio staff, nothing more.

Im just being realistic. And even if the seller tries to fight it, we all know that money talks louder... it has happened SO many times in this industry!

I call bullcrap. Absolute bullcrap. If that was the case, people wouldn't be begging Nintendo to be third party.

Sadly the people that make decisions are not the ones that make the games.

If Sony just flashes money to the CEOs of Atlus that are desperate for money to fund their expensive retirement plans, you think the CEOs (that have nothing to do with games or gamemaking) will care about what IPs they hold or not? (Sony or MS or Square, whatever company)

Sony would be the best fit for them. Persona 4 Exclusive on WiiU sounds like crap, Exclusive to PS4 sounds awesome.
