I can't stand vehicle sections in games.

HL2 was a great game with them too (hovercraft .... grrrrrrrrrr)

But come on, 80%?...... borriiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnng!

FamiBox

Half-Life 2 wasn't built around vehicle sections, nor is it even fair to compare the two since they're drastically different and you have not played the new Banjo-Kazooie game.

There's no way you can say it's boring having never tried it.

Did you guys REALLY just want another hum drum platformer? Think about how boring that would've been.

ESPECIALLY after mario galaxy.

Bread_or_Decide

Well there are people that probably wouldn't mind having more traditional platformers in this day and age... With last gen most of the platformers were sorrounded by what? Jak and Daxter; Ratchet? Among others. Games that felt like a mixture of Jet force gemini with platforming elements, mixed with elements of GTA... in the end, I still enjoyed them, but after a generation of almost devoid of traditional platformers, I can definitely understand why people would want more of them in the first place.

I find this whole theme in Banjo to be potentially very interesting, what remains to be seen is if whether or not the game will triumph in the one area the series is labeled to begin with.

You can't get access to advanced vehicle parts early on in the game, they're called key parts. You unlock them by beating bosses and advancing through the game. These parts allow you to access new areas of the world, much like when you gained a new ability in older Banjo games.

The reason of rare adding vehicles was so you can edit them to aid you in any situation, since you can edit your vehicle at any moment in the game. If you feel your vehicle needs something to help you complete a task, just add whatever you want to it. They wanted the player to feel like they're making the abilties instead of going by premade ones.

KrazyKenKutarag

That's perfectly fine, but we still don't know how such a pacing will feel in the end. Or how many tasks of those actually evolve around platforming. This will all depend on the vehicles and level design based on the vehicles themselves. If Rare manages to do that well, we probably have a winner in our hands. I still have to see more footage of the game, because even from a vehicle performance, from what I've seen untill now, I hardly noticed any platforming elements to begin with.

Sure some cars can jump, and some vehicles can fly(if you can call that platforming), but in the latest footage I have seen very little in level design that takes advantage of those vehicles in the platforming department. Except for the previews, we have seen next to nothing of what the game can offer. I have to see more of it, it's really that simple.

In the end even platforming can take a backstage if the game is simply awesome. But if Rare manages to do everything in the package in a satisfying way, more power to us.

just for memory's:)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHGHvRE7D38

at that time rare changed to M$ i hoped for sequels of there old franchises and banjo was one of them :( it was the only real good platformer besides mario for me !

fishfake
RARE have never been content with simply rehashing sequels, even under Microsoft they've pushed towards innovative and fun gameplay. Kameo: Elements of Power and Viva Pinata are a good example of this.

I dont like that much focus on vehicles.

However.

As an 'artist' I do like the art style. Alot. The patchwork style landscapes and mechano like vehicles is a refreshing change.

Perfect Dark Zero wasn't garbage, it was rushed for the Xbox 360's launch by Microsoft as RARE employees have stated.

What people want doesn't dictate the direction developers go, or atleast it shouldn't. Nintendo have always pushed to find new things that the player would enjoy even in unconventional ways, which is why it isn't suprising that RARE have this similar philosophy for game design.

BreakingPoint8

Well, what do you expect us to do? Lap it up? I'm waiting until the game is out to put out final judgement, but from what I've seen so far I'm not impressed :|

Rare have said (in the video interview) that the hub world is still pretty much platforming based, and collecting jiggies and notes will be familiar to old fans. Many people just seem to be writing off this game without knowing much about the gameplay at all. I'm glad your being opened minded, though. In a month there is E3, so I'm sure there will be some more gameplay there.

The patchwork looks far better in LittleBigPlanet. I get the impression they ripped the idea from the Sony game. They Sony game will come out before this.

Yes, I did. Why is it so hard to fathom that there are fans of this genre? I could say the same thing about Halo3 or GTA4, do you guys really wand another hum drum fps or sandbox game. The difference is that there are a lot of games in both those genres available to fill your gaming needs, platformers not so much.

i hated all the vehicle scenes in hl2 especially the hovercraft scene.

I liked the vehicle scenes in HL2. The airboat was a nice adrenaline rush, from the tight confined inner canal areas, and the beach was nice and open after close quaters ravenholm and mines. Though the buggys handeling was iffish, and the boost sucked, but it was a thrill to race along the highway and sand dunes. At least the muscle car in Ep2 fixed many issues.

As for Banjo, well vehicles are a central focus, they probably will be exectued very well.. However this seems like defy what the Banjo series has been about, and what made it sucessful. Platforming.

So yea the vehicles are central, rather than just getting A to B like in HL2.

Honestly I wouldent wouldent say so. Banjo's looks pretty magnificant, reason being is that the patchwork covers huge areas, and it makes quite an impact, it also seems to kind of fit with the jumbed machines.

However LBPs does have charm to it, and enforces how the game is focused on player 'home made' mini games (kinda like 'imperfect but lovable' patchwork dolls - created by people, home made).

Platforming in vehicles is actually fun. There were a few levels in the old Trackmania where it required you, with no time limit, to get to the end of the course by jumping, going upside down, doing all sorts of tricks, and it worked.

Will it work for Banjo, and can you base a whole game around it? I'm not sure, and I'm not keeping my hopes up.

For me it was always the direction that the Stamper Bros imbued into the early platformers that made them special.

I agree with some of the commnts above that point out the fact it could well be a great game, but like I say in my initial post, how on earh can it be considerd a platformer when 80% of the game is devoted to traversing the enviroment on vehicles.

The Stamper Bros didn't have much to do at all with either Banjo's, neither of them were in charge of the Banjo games.

What!, it was Chris Stamper that initiated the whole project with want to create a platform game to rival SM64, Mayles took hold of the project but the project was under the Stamper Bros eyes throughout.

@Skrat_1, I agree entirely with what you say about the patchwork nature of LBP and how fitting it is, but can the same be said here due to the creation element?, with mechanical structures.

Good point, the platforming in trackmania was pretty damn fun and addictive. Though it was in a different fromat to what it seems to be in Banjo. In trackmania the platforming game mode (methinks its still in all the TMs) was more like a traditional platformer 'short' level - like a sidescroller, wheras banjo isnt a linear short, broken up levels, style of platforming. Nevertheless, should be interesting to see how it turns out.

Let's not compare this to the Gummu parts of KH... I can definitely name lots of reasons. Hell, I remember a time in Jak 3 where you control a vehicle that was used to jump some obstacles and I thought at the moment: It may not be anything out of this world, but it is somewhat neat.

If Rare manages to do the above in an extraordinary way, it might become a pretty cool platformer. Just as long as there is a good balance between this and any other potentially awesome thing the vehicles can do that is something other than platforming.

I am not disputing that, like I say I know he was the Designer, I have also read the end credits. What I am suggesting is that the Stamper Bros played a large role in the direction of all those early N64 games, like Killer Instinct and Banjo and Co. I recall reading a interview in Mean Machines Magazine (UK) back in the day where Chris said he would be taking a hands on role to establish themselves on the new platform with a creation of a game to rival SM64.

I tried looking for the very interview but unfortunately they do not hold interviews in their archive :(

I'm not comparing the vehicle part of Nuts & Bolts to the Gummi Ship, I'm comparing the way that the hub world (where most of the platforming has been mentioned) has been commented on makes that part feel like the Gummi part of KH. In otherwords, here's this thing you have to do inbetween the main part that you "really want to play" (the vehicles).

I'm not saying that the hub world part will be a poorly done or boring as using the Gummi Ship was in KHI, but that certainly wasn't why people played the game.

I know I want it... Always had a fascination of building things with Lego's and Erector sets.

Now I can use what I build whitch is neat.

[QUOTE="mingo123"]and now there is 80% of chance me not buying that gameII_Seraphim_II

same here :( People play Banjo or platforming, not racing :( Thats like making GTA and saying you cant jack cars and kill people. Or making a new Mortal Kombat game without fatalities *glares.*

Oh good, because Banjo isn't a racer. Stop just looking at screens and making dumb assumptions.

Try reading the previews, you know, reading? Left to right, top to bottom, letters make words which make sentences. Take tylenol for any headaches, Midol for any cramps.

There could still be platforming withh vehicles, you just do the platforming stuff in the vehicles and not on foot. I think people should wait before they start to whine about this.

Also BTW, the new MK game will remove fatalities (and be rated T)

Rare said they were kicking around the idea for a long time. So they finally got their wish.

Now people are crying about it and saying it's MS fault.

It could still be fun.. not sure how platforming would be if it revolveds 80% around vehicles. Maybe the environments will be so vast like cavern exploring with huge leapable canyons or such, or underwater exploring where giant creatures chase you and you have to go under/over archs, around pillars to escape or something like that in which platform mechanisms can implemented. Hmm, actually rereading what I typed out, it seems like they could make it fun..

you should prolly try reading yourself. please point out where i said banjo was a racer? Im merely stating that making the majority of the game about Vehicles rather than platforming defeats the point of a Banjo game.

I think people are missing the point horribly here....

After seeing the first trailer I was initially depressed about the vehicles and the removal of kazooies moves, but it finally dawned on me that RARE are looking to potentially revolutionise the platform genre in a similiar way to LBP.

The vehicles arent about "racing" , rather they are custom vehicles built to negotiate a large and complex world.

You the player are allowed to customise the skill set of the main character in a way never before imagined!

It could all be a disaster, but i applaud RARES ambition to offer us somethiung trully unique!

That statement you made infers that you think the game is a racer. If you didn't mean that, you should learn how to write as well.

Anyways, the game IS about platforming. Where instead of using character specific abilities and running around on foot, you constantly create and edit your current vehicle with parts and traits that help you solve puzzles or get around obstacles. There really isn't a difference between this, and having Link walk around and choosing to use fire arrows, boomerangs, hookshots, and mirror shields to solve the puzzles.

If it does have racing elements you would be foolish to diss it, remember a game called Diddy kong Racing.

A chuckle worthy video

That makes me really want Boom Blox actually.

I'll wait and see what Rare can do.

The concept of Viva Pinata sounds terrible to me, but I was addicted to the game.

[QUOTE="Dahaka-UK"][QUOTE="Malta_1980"]

so that makes it more a racing game rather than a platform game...

Bread_or_Decide

Except you don't actually race... You platform in vehicles.. I don't like the idea of it either.

That may be more fun than you think. We really should wait to see how this turns out before we get hysterical about it.

Agree. New concepts require more imagination.

Or more hands-on impressions. :)

Im a little dissapointed, because i never got to play banjo 1 or 2 and was hoping to experience the same gameplay on the 360 this time around. Having said that though, one of my favourite games so far this gen is gripshift, so platforming and driving isnt exactly the worst thing it could be :).

Slightly off-topic, how is Patapon?
