[QUOTE="MGS9150"]What about red steel, it was hyped AAA and it got 5.5 thats a difference of 3.5. Lair was hyped AA and got 4.5 thats also a difference of 3.5. I think they tie.
Tamarind_Face
They're just gonna ignore your post because lair is the new fad right now.
Yes, Red Steel would be an equal flop to Lair. Surprised no one's mentioned it.
[QUOTE="Blackbond"]I agree with the magnitude of Daikatana, but the SW board didn't existed yet, when it flopped. and I thought the post was about flops that were about within the SW history.Man that number looked like 1,200,000 when I got to it that night lol. But in all seriousness the biggest flop ever has got to be Daikatana. Now I know people will talk about impact and whatever. But impact has nothing to do with anything because all impact is, is a bunch of fanboys sheep and haters a like laughing, crying, and whining about given sitiuation.
Daikatana was an absolute disaster. On it own right Zelda TP is a good game but Daikatana actually was so bad that it closed down Ion Storm's Dallas office. The deving was an absolute disaster. Disgruntled employess quitting, the game was lagging behind visually by newer game engines, the dude even hired his playboy girlfriend as a level designer lol. The thing was like one huge soap operah spanning 1997 to 2000 with all the constant delays. The game was supposed to be done in 7 monthes. It took four freaking years lol.
"John Romero will make you his B!@CH!"
"Everything John Romero touches will turn to gold."
Ha what a joke. Not only is this the biggest flop in the history of Video Games it will go down as the biggest embarrassment and humiliation to any developer, EVER.
Panzer_Zwei
Even then I still couldn't say Zelda even coming from a guy (which is me) who's favorite franchise is Zelda. If its to be labled to biggest flop of all time then so be it. But like I said the magnitude and impact doesn't mean jack. All it is, is a bunch of fanboys screaming back and forth like they always do. Hell a Zelda has gotten an 8.0 before its not like it was something new. Final Fantasy and Zelda the two most historicly beloved franchises have each had 2 games in the 8's and its never been a huge deal.
When I think flops I think Killzone, Daikatana, and recently Blue Dragon and Lair. I think of Zelda TP as a dissapointment but definately far from the biggest flop of all time.
Score wise. LoZ just ROCKED system wars.
This Lair score was really expected, as the hype just died in the last 2 weeks. No one expected LoZ not getting AAA.
Daikatana was a huge disaster and likely the biggest embarrassment in gaming history, but honestly, a flop? I don't know that I would even use that word at all to describe it, honestly. Do you guys seriously not remember how many people were hating on that game and on John Romero/Ion Storm before its release? Most. A game flopping to me implies a lot of people thought it would be a good. A lot of people didn't think Daikatana would be good, especially not towards the end. Not after 4 years of shovelware and Romero's empty promises and general douchebaggery.
The infamy surrounding Daikatana has mostly do to Romero's lavishing himself with a multi-million dollar office at the Ion Storm Dallas headquarters, his place in the industry at the time, Ion Storm's controversial method of marketing the game, and how long it was in development for. It wasn't necessarily because people thought Daikatana would be really good and it ended up being garbage, though the low quality of the final version certainly did play a part.

QFT. To be flopped, i.e. using "flop" as a verb," is simply to be given a score lower than expected. But by definition, flops (using "flop" as a noun) are bad games that were expected to be good, i.e. Daikatana, Lair, Killzone, Over G Fighters, Red Steel, etc.
lair but at least it wasnt hyped AAA.ginglejangleit sure as hell was. AAA. Slapping Gears of War around like a ugly step child. Etc. etc.
Most impactful flop ever on SW is definitely TP.
Runners-up are Tetris DS/Metroid Prime: Hunters and Jade Empire.

but this is the largest score discrepancy between what was expected and what actually occured that I've seen. ever.
Lair i wouldn't even consider close to the biggest flop it was only hyped for its graphics and was even hyped as AAA only by fakeboys and the very few fanboys that every game has hyped it AAA.
If you wanna talk big flops Brute Force,Killzone,Red Steel, and Fable all have Lair beaten as they were all hyped AAA GOTY while Killzone and Brute Force were consider Halo killers,Lair was only hyped for graphics and as AA.While Lair is a flop there has been alot more bigger flops.

I agree on that point. This game was hyped AA at least, and a 4.5 is BAD. I was just talking about "impact" of the flops on the SW community. The TP review chased away a TON of sheep.
Btw, doesn't VanOrd seem to be going pretty heavy on his reviews lately? He's handed out a lot of lower-than-expected scores.

Zelda Twighlight Princess. Hyped AAA GOTY contender. Hardly anyone considered the possibility of it getting less then 9.0
Lair while still a major flop was only hyped AA by the majority of people and hailed as another bullet (or "a bullet") in the PS3 library.

What about Red Steel? Unless I am mistaken, in terms of score, it had the same difference of 3.5 (Hype: AAA vs. Score: 5.5).

the Lair hype only died because they already started getting terrible reviews from other places.

Just ignore him, in his SW it was hyped AAA because the graphics were compared with Gears of War(nice logic there).
The haters are forcing lair to be somekind of megaton flop because they want it to be funny, a meme and a weapon against cows. Lair's flop isnt even funny or shocking because we already experienced its floppage from the reviews it got from other sites.

Lair was only hyped for its graphics through thats a big difference, once you take away all the fakeboys and people with less then 10 post there wasn't much hyped outside the graphics.Like every game through there would be afew hardcore fanboys claiming AAA but not nearly on the scale as Killzone,Brute Force,Zelda,Red Steel, and Fable.
It's Lair by a long shot.
Say what you will about Zelda, Metroid, etc. but they scored ALL favorable reviews and most rated it AAA. And nobody with any sense would call them "not worth your time."
This is not the case with Lair, one of Sony's exclusives that was going to be a defining PS3 game.
Probably TP but why isn't doom 3 on that list?TeftlyI agree, Doom 3 was very relevant. Killed a lot of the hermit population of this board.

Holy crap, how could I have forgotten about Doom 3. That was a huge flop for its time.
Zelda. People are going to vote Lair because it just happened and the score is really low but Zelda had the most impact of all time.
Nike_Air
Prob with that is lair didn't and won't win GOTY at dozens of other sites and mags like LOZ:TP did.
Lair is something the PS3 needed, it may end up being a statement remember years ago of the PS3 last stand if it doesn't make enough progress this holiday season to catch up to the 360/Wii.
Cows need this along with Heavenly Sword.
I know people make light of how GS has been flopping Wii games with 8's and low 9's but you gotta undertand theres a huge 1.0 point curve upwards for these wii games in relation to what the other critics say.
Twilight Princess was GOTY everywhere last year except here.
MP3 hasn't gotten lower than 9.0 (on scales of 1-10) anywhere but here.
Lair and these other PS3 flops aren't doing the same. Lair is the red steel or better yet the far cry of the PS3's lineup.
I mean 10GBs of sound in Heavenly Sword? I DON'T CARE make 10 GBs of gameplay!

Holy crap, how could I have forgotten about Doom 3. That was a huge flop for its time.
How was TP a huge flop, I mean... it didn't exactly meet everyone's expectations but I think an 8.8 is a hell of a score for any game. Anyways, Lair for me. Hyped to be an AAA title, and gets a 4.5... that's terrible.

The thing is that if TP had gotten only .2 more points in its score, it wouldn't considered a flop at all. I just find that odd, especially considering Gamespot only goes by .5 now, which means that if they rated TP today it would likely be a 9.
Gamespot completely revamping their reviewing system should've changed some rules around here. How come it didn't? Now that they go by .5 the whole AAA/AA/A thing is completely different from before. How do you compare a game that gets 9 (AAA) with the new reviewing system to one that got an 8.8 (AA) with the old one? How do you know that 9 wouldn't have also been an 8.8 in the old system, and the 8.8 a 9 with the new one? All of a sudden, that AAA is a AA and vice versa.
MP3. it was hyped to be the Wii's savior yet it ended up being nothing but a average game.Pdiddy105Average?
[QUOTE="Nike_Air"]MP3 hasn't gotten lower than 9.0 (on scales of 1-10) anywhere but here darth-pyschosisGamepro gave it a 8.5 (I believe) and Yahoo! games gave it a 4/5. Still, it has over a 90% at gamerankings with those scores tallied in.
[QUOTE="LegendofNerd"]Lair. Without a doubt.Carmilla31MGS3 went from a AAA franchise, last game was a 9.6, to a AA. Blue Dragon was made from the creator of Final Fantasy and thought as a 'Square killer.' Metroid 3 went from a AAA franchise to AA like MGS3. Zelda was a AAA-AAAA franchise and bombed at a AA. I actually think Lair is the least flop of all of those considering Factor 5 never made a sure fire hit in the past.
MGS did get an aaa.

I know the hype only died after the terrible reviews, but that is all I'm saying. When people clicked on the review for Lair they were expecting a score lower than 6.0 because of all the reviews in the past week. The LoZ was huge in how it was completely unexpected.
I've never seen a game crash and burn as bad as Lair has this past week, but I just don't see this review having the same immediate impact as LoZ did. (which made System wars go CRAZY)
Lair of course. Some of you say Twilight Princess was a flop, but that's just Gamespot's perspective. It'd be nice if we'd all look around and see what else it scored from other reviewer sites (i.e. Gamestats and Gamerankings?). The same goes with Metroid Prime 3. An 8.8 on Gamespot, but a 9.4 on Gamestats isn't it?
Though Lair, it scored pretty harsh all over ...
Twilight princess, because it was hyped AAAA and was said to be better than OOT.MGS9150I don't recall AAAA hype, but that aside, I hate to break this to you, but Twilight Princess IS a better game than OoT. The score doesn't match up simply because the standards have changed. What was revolutionary when OoT came out is no longer revolutionary in the world of video games, however if you actually played Twilight Princess, you would know that when compared against OoT, it IS a superior game, that although does much of the same that OoT did, it improves upon much specific aspects that OoT introduced. Not to mention most if not all reviewers have stated it is the better game, and if you actually played the game you would agree, but judging from your banners, i would say you have never touched a Nintendo console in your life.

I think it is just because Lair is on everybody's mind. Usually polls aren't this unanimous unless all the choices are the same with one exception (Like: Yes, Correct, I agree, NO!).Please Log In to post.
