9.0 Means Bioshock will not be GOTY here , Fallout 3 will get 9.5 and will get GOTY award.007ybse04
I thought fallout was coming out in Q4 2008

[QUOTE="MetalContra"]Gears of War is a better game than Bioshock at Gamespot.MuffinsKillyea i guess but wasnt gears rated by the old grading system? anyways gears is awsome:D
I really couldn't care less about GS's score, they almost always rate games below the average. What really kills my excitement for this game is the freezing glitch they talk about. 5 second freezes, up to three times a minute? I would classify that as unplayable. The only surprise is that GS gave the game higher than a 2 if you ask me. Until that glitch is fixed
I'm not buying the game.chutup
I think in the end its not Bioshock getting a 9.0, rather other games will potentially outscore it(without merit). I think many people will agree that Bioshock pushes the genre enough in gamplay mechanics while maintaining a fresh and interesting enviroment.
Think, HL2 scored a 9.2 right? That score in retrospect looks wrong. While, halo 2 scored higher. If Halo 3 gets a 10, I will be upset. If Killzone 2 or any other random FPS scores higher, I will be upset.
Watch out MP3.
Make way for Mass Effect for GOTY I guess.
And darn, I'm 0 for 1, so far in my GOTY predictions in my sig.
Yeah I read the review.......poorly written it was.Danthegamingman
Who are you shakesphere? quit moaning. Review was great. Video Review was great.

Haha, I agree.
But the visuals aren't without flaw--the game has an annoying seizure problem that almost looks like a correctable bug. On some consoles, the game hitches up and totally freezes for anywhere from one to five seconds at a time, then proceeds as if nothing happened.
I actually find that shocking, its the only part that really bothered me. See the great thing about consoles, well one of the great things is I shouldn't have to worry about system requirements but it would seem that not every 360 can play this game properly, yeah that sucks.

It's quite weird that none of the other "big" reviews mentioned this problem. Also, none of the people who got their hands on it early have mentioned this problem.
I still think it's the 360 they were using, because no one else has had these issues.

maybe because gamespot had more time with their review they played through the game a number of times on different consoles to give the best review i dunno just a guess, this is the reason why gs dont come out with their reviews so early
want to add this again from the old thread, just in case people are thinking a 9.0 is somehow "bad".
9.0-9.5: Superb We absolutely recommend any game in this range, especially to fans of that particular genre. However, games that score in the 9 range are also typically well suited to new players. Games that earn 9s are naturally uncommon, and earn GameSpot's Editors' Choice Award for their outstanding quality.
I would be honored to have ANYTHING I made talked about like that.
someone posted this earlier
Hmm I was certainly expecting a 9.5 - oh well it seems asthough GS is still quite harsh in reviewing games, even with the new system.
I wonder how the PC version will score........
skrat_01
Same score.
And do you think the reason it couldn't get more than 9 was because it was single player only? I think VALUE has to be taken into consideration here.

Ah k same score. As for no MP, I dunno........ Sometimes its BETTER not to have mp, and refine the sp experience - something that should have been done with the Darkness.
Hell look at Metroid Prime. No mp what so ever.
Was the other thread flooded with nonsense? Well, at least that is fixed now.
Werent most expecting it to be 9.5? I mean, a 9.0 is a bit of a mistery to me. Maybe it is AAA because it was rounded up, maybe it is actually higher than 9.0. Oh well. I guess thanks to GS's new review system, we will never know. Regardless, Bioshock is officially AAA here on GS, so theres really no arguing. Thats what it was hyped to be. Although, I still dont understand the hype...which is why I must check this game out. If it is really as great as, uh, everyone thinks, I dont want to be missing out.
JEFF MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN LYING. This is take straight from the read me file on the PC version of Bioshock:X360 uses an ATI graphics card so no that would not be it.
"3.2.1 Framerate Stuttering on NVIDIA Cards
------------------------------------------
There are known framerate stuttering problems when running the game on some NIVIDIA graphics cards. If you experience these problems, you should install the latest NVIDIA drivers. You can find drivers that are known to work with Bioshock at:
http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_bioshock_downloads.html
"
This is why they wanted to wait for the PC demo... they wanted us to have the latest drivers because of a known issue, does this issue carry over to the Xbox 360?
subrosian
All of this hype after the demo and no one thought to look at the gameplay. Sounds to me, after reading the review, that they made it a little too easy.
Still has to be a great game, though. Lots of people are enjoying it.
One more thing to add............. All of this time there's been talk about how most PC's couldn't handle this game. Well, it appears as if the 360 can't handle it either with 1-5 second lags. I'm not saying its 360's fault, the devs should have seen this early enough to fix it. Sounds like a very annoying issue to me.
I wasreally hoping for a 9.5, but 9 is still good. But you got to love Jeff reveiws, they normally lead to fun times here at system wars.
But if the little freezing problem didn't show up when I am playing the game, it may be Jeff's 360 (or maybe he got an older build). That seems like a pretty noticeable glitch, seems weird that it didn't come up on the other reviews; but it still got a 9, which is an AAA
I don't think Jeff talked about this in his review, nor have I seen anyone else bring it up, but in my play through of the demo I noticed that the AI seemed a little suicidal. How did the AI turn out for the final version?Bansheesdie
Well they seems like they are suppose to be suicidal, ADAM made them insane.
Jeff sucks donkey balls! Lol, just kidding :P
9.0 is lower than I expected. I was expecting a 9.5
But I can't help but feel that without the new and ''improved'' rating system the game would have got a 9.3 or 9.4 here....

I thought the game was fairly well optimized... :?

You mean you were "expecting" an 9.5? Why would you "hope". Unless you were in a bet. Scores shouldn't mean anything as long as you enjoy the game.

Well I was kinda hoping it would of knocked Zelda:OoT off the top rated list of Gamerankings (not that I don't like the game, it just about time some game replaces it)
If you guys had paid attention to the review, it says on some consoles.
On some consoles, the game hitches up and totally freezes for anywhere from one to five seconds at a time, then proceeds as if nothing happened.
Jeff the douche
So they HAVE tried it on different 360's, and some it screwed up and some it didn't.
Sorry, this is a very noob question. I've seen the hype stickies. i see where Casey says that this game was hyped AAA. Where is that information located? Where do I go look up what the final hype vote was on a particular game?dubvisions
Yeah, casey doens't do a very good job of setting up the stickies with info. He just assumes you've been here everyday/everyhour and posts something relevant for the minute at hand. One would hope he's post links to some background info. Heck, he doesn't even link to the review, so the odds of him improving the other aspects aren't going to happen.
Review looks about right to me. But the sad thing is it sounds like it's a rental even though it's AAA. I don't see much replayability in the game.
But lemmings now have another AAA title.

To me there looks like very little replayability.Without that, how can you give it a 9.5 or 10? TBH it sounds like a rental to me. You can get the great experience it offers in about 20 hours. If you have blockbuster total access you get 1 free game rental per month. You can keep it for a month and only pay a $1.37 restocking fee. So for $1.37 I can enjoy the game just as much as a person who pays $60. If I want to play it again in 6 months I can do the same thing. So for under $3 I can play the game twice in the year.
The one thing I really didn't understand about the review was the point about a "lack of death penalty"? This isn't an MMO. In most shooters on the PC you can quicksave and quickload wherever the hell you want, so I don't see how having respawn chambers makes things easier.

In nearly all of the reviews I have read, the reviewer mentions that the game is highly replayable because the combat is so varied. Also, there are two endings to the game, which further incentivizes another playthrough.

MyopicCanadian
The enemies take damage that carries over after you die. So you can just keep running at a big daddy shoot it one time and then die. Rinse and repeat and it will eventually die.

Playing it twice isn't really replayability. And as I mentioned I can play it for 2 months for under $3. Compare that to say...Halo 2 where it's still has tons of people playing online.
I'm not saying BioSHock is bad, but could use some MP component.
Just throwing in a few reminders:
9.0 is AAA. Some people hyped 9.5 which is also AAA. Sure, you can be disappointed, but it didn't flop unless you hyped AAAA. If you did, you're in the minority.
9.0 doesn't mean it is equal to Perfect Dark Zero or any other 9.0 games. Different genres are rated differently and standards upgrade over time.
Bioshock still has a good shot at Game of the Year 2007. Need I remind you that World of Warcraft beat Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for Game of the Year 2004?
BE HAPPY OR ELSE!!!
Jeff says in his video review that the game doesn't promote exploration because it has that big guide arrow that points you in the direction you're supposed to go, he made a pretty big deal about these arrows. I'd just like to point out that these arrows can be turned off, so that point is mute Jeff, shouldn't have even been brought up as it's optional, like the guide arrows in Oblivion.
Another gripe is his doen't mention this glitch in the video review that makes the game stutter, yet it counts as a negative in the written review. People with the game have said this is a hard drive issue, not a problem witht the game, so that shouldn't have counted against the game either.
It's fair enough if Jeff found the combat unsatisfying, I guess you can't please everyone, but his other problems with the game are not valid as the arrows can be turned off and the glitching is only affecting a few gamers with hard drive issues.
End of rant.
