Electronic Arts Plays Catch-Up After Shrugging Off Wii's Appeal

By Michael White

April 9 (Bloomberg) -- Video-game designer Nick Earl spent eight months holed up with his development team rushing to adapt ``The Godfather'' for Nintendo Co.'s Wii.

The reason for the long hours: Earl's employer, Electronic Arts Inc., like some of its competitors, underestimated demand for the Wii, whose motion-activated wand lets players wield a virtual sword, mimic real golf swings or strangle a victim. Instead, game makers put most of their resources into Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3, which was released two days earlier in November with a more conventional hand controller.

Now, publishers are scrambling to get titles to the 3.56 million U.S. and Japanese Wii owners who have made the machine the top-selling game console this year.

``Those companies are backtracking,'' said Anthony Gikas, an analyst at Piper Jaffray & Co. in Minneapolis.

``They're going to need to get their best-branded product on that platform.

That will take a good nine to 12 months.''

A shortage of Wii games contributed to a 25 percent drop in sales in February from a year earlier at Redwood City, California-based Electronic Arts, the world's largest video-game publisher, said Todd Greenwald, an analyst at Nollenberger Capital Partners in San Francisco. Industry sales in February rose 28 percent.

Shares of Electronic Arts have risen 3.1 percent this year, the smallest gain among the four biggest publishers.

Top Games

U.S. and Japanese sales of Wii players totaled 1.47 million in January and February, said market researchers NPD Group Inc. and Enterbrain. PlayStation 3 tallied 604,331, while stores sold 584,329 of Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 consoles. Wii is also leading in Europe, said London-based researcher Screen Digest.

Wii games, all produced by Kyoto, Japan-based Nintendo, took three of the top 10 sales spots in the U.S. in February, said NPD, based in Port Washington, New York. Not a single U.S. publisher had a Wii game in the top 20 in February.

Nintendo's lead will widen, pressuring companies even more. Researcher IDC predicts Nintendo will ship 16.1 million players this year, outpacing Microsoft's 9.87 million Xbox 360s and Sony's 9.1 million PlayStation 3s. Wii game sales will total $2.2 billion, trailing only Xbox 360, said IDC, based in Framingham, Massachusetts.

Electronic Arts wasn't the only publisher slow to see Wii's appeal.

New York-based Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., maker of ``Grand Theft Auto'' games, had no Wii titles when the player was released and now plans to have three this year, said spokesman Jim Ankner.

Activision Inc., based in Santa Monica, California, plans to release six Wii games this year, giving the second-largest publisher a total of 11, said spokeswoman Maryanne Lataif.

Miscalculation

Game companies had expected PlayStation 3 to dominate based on the success of PlayStation 2, said John Taylor, an analyst with Arcadia Investment Corp. in Portland, Oregon. Sony has sold more than 100 million PlayStation 2s since 2001, including 37.7 million in the U.S., making it the top-seller. Nintendo's previous console, GameCube, sold 11.7 million units in the U.S.

Perceptions changed when Nintendo unveiled Wii last May in Los Angeles. Demonstration consoles attracted long lines of developers waiting to swing a virtual tennis racquet.

``People got their hands on that controller and started playing games and said, `This is fun, this is going to do better than we expected,''' Electronic Arts Chief Executive Officer Lawrence Probst said at a Morgan Stanley conference on March 5.

With six months to go before Wii's release and games requiring a year or more to develop, publishers knew they were in trouble.

Redeploying

Electronic Arts bought Bountiful, Utah-based Headgate Studios Inc. in November to bolster Wii development. With ``Godfather Black Hand Edition'' and ``Tiger Woods Golf 07'' in stores,

Electronic Arts has six Wii titles and plans to have about a dozen in total this year.

``We came back and redeployed a lot of our resources,'' said Earl, who heads Electronic Arts' Redwood Shores studio.

The results are seen in ``Godfather,'' where players use their hands to shake the wand and an attachment, dubbed a nunchuk, back and forth as if strangling or jostling someone. The wand also can be used to punch or shoot victims.

``You really feel like you grab someone,'' Earl said.

The Wii may prove to be a windfall, since games cost just $2 million to $5 million to create, a fraction of the $20 million to $30 million spent on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 titles, analyst Taylor said. In addition,

Wii appears to be expanding the market, rather than stealing sales from rivals, he said.

Ubisoft

Ubisoft Entertainment SA, maker of ``Rayman'' and ``Tom Clancy,'' was the quickest to recognize Wii's appeal and is reaping the rewards.

Wii games helped increase sales for the December quarter by 24 percent to $405 million. In January, the company raised its 2007 forecast for revenue growth to 16 percent from 10 percent to 12 percent previously.

Ubisoft, based in the Paris suburb of Montreuil-Sous-Bois, had seven Wii games out by December and plans six more by June, said Tony Key, vice president of marketing.

``It's not really a bet anymore,'' he said. ``It's a viable system that's going to make us money.''

The Wii is going to die out buddy, it s jsut a matter of time now. Sure it seems fun to play at first, but it is crap for hardcore gamers. Only three types of people buy the Wii in my perspective: people who are just breaking into the gaming society, people whoa re rich enough to afford multiple systems (Wii + 360/PS3), or little kids with ADD/ ADHD.

It's going to die-out when the development community is rushing to its aid?

Highly unlikely.

If anything this confirms it will continue to dominate this gen.

I like the part where he said devs are going to get their best branded products on the Wii...

that means not only will the Wii have the best first party games, but the best of third party games as well.

Very true, the problem is though, while Nintendo is realing in cash like crazy atm, the system isn t really going to be a strong competitor in 2 years time. To me it appears to be a fad that will eventually lose it s popularity, but hey, I could be wrong and Nintendo could still pull something off to make it appeal to tradition/hardcore gamers and until then, I ll stick with what i ve got now.

Hows that?  Sony was on top last gen, losing that place would suprise Sony quite a bit, MS is still making a name for themselves in the Console buisness.

We will just have to wait and see. If it starts getting games that appeal to the hardcore, then it will start selling even more, but right now I only see party games, ports and games that lack depth.

Why not?  Every current indicator points to the Wii having the most userbase and most software support in 2 years' time.  Why would the dominant system not be a strong competitor?

I'm glad it worked out for Ubisoft, I'd just like to see that increase in profits from the wii translate into better quality games. From what I've played so far, ubisoft has a long way to go before my faith in them is restored.

do you have any facts to back your opinions? I'm not any of the 3 types you mentioned and yet the wii is my only console. why would it die after 2 years? if it's strong for 2 years it would get most of the dev support like the article suggested. Hardcore gamers are a farce. they embraced the ps2 with just like the masses did because that's where the dev support was.

I never really liked the way Bloomberg always quotes some random big-wig when it suits the purpose. Like when the markets are up, they quote only CEOs saying "the market will continue to rise", and when they are down, they only quote fund managers saying "I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole".

They never seem to provide opposing views, so I can't take all of this seriously.

I'd take this bit of information with a short-term view of the current situation that the Wii is selling a lot for the year really.

I didnt read the inital post only the topic atm, so not sure the full contents of the post.

Anyway the Wii does have games and for the type of console it is it doesnt need graphics, the only thing keeping the Wii alive is the controller, if the system was still cheaper and had a regular controller it would fail.

While the Wii is attracting a lot of people to the gaming market, the Wii is in a different league from the other two systems. It s more of a "party" system that s fun to play with friends (or when you re drunk) but imo it doesn t seem right to be sitting at home waving your controler around for more than an hour.

I hate repeating myself... The Wii is a fad in imo, and it s not in the same league as the other systems (not saying it is inferior). The Wii appeals to people that will play games only every now and then and not those that play on a daily basis (over 9 hours a week). If Nintendo can make the Wii have a traditional feel to it as well as an innovative sense then good for them i ll fork over my $350 (canadian) for the system, if not then i wont and quite a few people will dot he same.

If Nintendo doesn't stop people from dumping crap on it's system and taking forever to ship it's own games, my Wii is going to dominate itself right to Ebay...The novelty has worn off. Lets see some good games.

So will Nintendo sell that 16.1 million and become the leader by the end of the year?

And if they will stop buying it, when?

If you are 14 yrs old than great; you got a winning console for yourself - someting tells me when you have grown a bit; you may enjoy a more sufisticated form of " Gaming " and will regret the day that gimmick and fluff took over the gaming age.

I will be the first to tell you that - gimmick and fluff is what VG started as but.... those days were and I repeat "were" gone untill the Wii came on the sceen - Nintendo at it's best ! I mean it too !!  b/c it is where they excel and unfortunately is where you will have a hand on setting the trend !

For awhile I have been proud to see interactive video games rival hollywood and surpase it in $$$$ and creativity but now it feels to me the gamer will need to take 5 steps backwords in the general publics eyes when - One says " I love VG " so I must be a kid to enjoy this adadolescent hobby - friggin sad !:(

[QUOTE="Setsa"][QUOTE="Supafly1"][QUOTE="Setsa"]The Wii is going to die out buddy, it s jsut a matter of time now. Sure it seems fun to play at first, but it is crap for hardcore gamers. Only three types of people buy the Wii in my perspective: people who are just breaking into the gaming society, people whoa re rich enough to afford multiple systems (Wii + 360/PS3), or little kids with ADD/ ADHD.Iyethar

But those three you listed outnumber the hardcore.

Why not? Every current indicator points to the Wii having the most userbase and most software support in 2 years' time. Why would the dominant system not be a strong competitor?

All i m saying is that i don t think its popularity will last. It s a good system if you ve got a 360/PS3 with it but i can t imagine any tradition/hardcore gamers surviving with only the Wii. While the Wii is attracting a lot of people to the gaming market, the Wii is in a different league from the other two systems. It s more of a "party" system that s fun to play with friends (or when you re drunk) but imo it doesn t seem right to be sitting at home waving your controler around for more than an hour.

Why not?  What you just told me boils down to "I would get bored of the Wii after owning it for a while."  How do you get from there to "People will stop buying it"?

And if they will stop buying it, when?

Some people will eventually get bored of the Wii. There is only so much it can do for so long to still make it seem fun. Right now everyone who has a Wii is enjoying it because it is fresh, innovative, etc. but after a while the innovation will get old. There will still be those who have fun with it and buy the Wii, but it s popularity will decrease because something else catches their eye. Human kind is always looking for new ways to have fun and sometimes people will rush into something without thinking about it in the long run. When a lot of men and women were younger, they played pokemon, digimon, etc. cards because they seemed hot an everyone was buying them. After a few years though they became stale and lost a fair chunk of their fan base. People still buy them now though, and the franchise perserveres because of it, but atm it sin t doing as well as it was before. My prediction is this will happen to the Wii as well.

It's going to die-out when the development community is rushing to its aid?

Highly unlikely.

If anything this confirms it will continue to dominate this gen.

As long as this means they are switching from making half assed wii ports to games made for the wii then I'm happy (although EA have supprisingly been the best third party on the wii).

To this Wii hater who says the Wii will die out, i supposed you have the Nintendo Wii so you know what your talking about? If it doesn't appeal to you then that is fine, but don't start talking stupidness like, it only applies to rich kids and spolied bratz, i have played games since NES so that would make me a hardcore gamer, and the Nintendo Wii is MY FIRST CHOICE, eventually i will get a PS3, but if you don't like the Wii, speak for yourself, and the stupidest thing is yet, "the Wii is a fad" WTHELL? Your excuses seem to be getting dummer and dummer

It was clearly stated that publishers didn't anticipate Wii's success, things should change for the better in the near future, when games that are developed from the ground up for the Wii start hitting retail.

So my question is this:

With the huge popularity of the Wii with consumers, Nintendo's first party domination, and now third parties behind the Wii,

how can it be stopped?

so, according to him the 360 won't sell anymore since it'll still be at the present 9.86 millions consoles sold, the PS3 will come closer with 9.1 millions and the Wii will have 16 millions? i don't get it.

do you have any facts to back your opinions? I'm not any of the 3 types you mentioned and yet the wii is my only console. why would it die after 2 years? if it's strong for 2 years it would get most of the dev support like the article suggested. Hardcore gamers are a farce. they embraced the ps2 with just like the masses did because that's where the dev support was.

If the trend continues with Wii only having party games, kiddy games (yes I said kiddy) and games that have no serious depth then it won't appeal to some of the crowd. I don't seem to like the idea of playing party games all the time or games that lack any story and appeals to small children a lot. It can still have a huge success and be dominant.

Again, you're focusing on the potential for people who have already bought a Wii to get tired of the novelty.  How does this discourage new customers from purchasing?  If anything, it's driving Wii sales, because people are trying to recapture and sustain the novelty through vicarious experience.  They show other people Wii Sports, enjoy watching them play it for the first time.  Then some of those people say "I've got to get a Wii!" and continue the process.

More importantly, though, this is the console industry.  After a few years of sales like this, Wii will be in an unstoppably dominant position, much like the PS2 circa 2003.  It won't need novelty anymore because it'll have massive software support.

No, those are predictions for the units that each console will sell this year.  9.86 million more X360s, 16 million more Wiis, etc.
