see THIS is why sales matter

sales lead to more developer support - which leads to more games

but the experts here at system wars and their "but....but...sales don't matter!!" arguments can't seem to accept this undeniable FACT

JB730
Yes, its a deadly cycle for other systems. As the Wii sells, more companies will produce games. With more games, comes more system sellers, which will sell more Wiis, which will get even more support, and so on and so forth.

Unless the wii can get good QUALITY games it will be ocnsidered a fad that will see sells fall in 2008. I have yet to see any games that are decent. Until they get some real games I will be holding out. This is the year of the wii, but once people begin to see great games on the 360 and the ps3 who will want to stick with the wii? Esp when the 360 has a price cut that would make the consoles (low end 360 wise) the same price!!!

Electronic Arts Plays Catch-Up After Shrugging Off Wii's Appeal

``They're going to need to get their best-branded product on that platform.

That will take a good nine to 12 months.''

Miscalculation

Game companies had expected PlayStation 3 to dominate based on the success of PlayStation 2,

With six months to go before Wii's release and games requiring a year or more to develop, publishers knew they were in trouble.

Electronic Arts has six Wii titles and plans to have about a dozen in total this year.

``We came back and redeployed a lot of our resources,'' said Earl, who heads Electronic Arts' Redwood Shores studio.

Wii appears to be expanding the market, rather than stealing sales from rivals, he said.

``It's not really a bet anymore,'' he said. ``It's a viable system that's going to make us money.''

I am referring to a major decrease in sales for the wii in 08. And for the person who said 7 months and still going strong, it's new of cource it's selling and it's cheap to buy. I have been over MARIO since I was a kid. So super paper mario isn't for me, and it's looks like the 1st mario but in space at times. Sorry, not my thing. Again Smooth moves and trama Center are not what I would consider the types of games I would enjoy. Not everyone enjoys those kind of games. Once they get some real games we will see. Manhunt might be interesting, RE4 (I am waiting on the new RE for the 360 and the ps3) might be ok. Time will tell if the develpoers actually make great games or simply make ok to poor quality games. I hope they will make great games but time will tell.

With the blockbuster first party games coming to the Wii this xmas, along with the pledge of much stronger third party support, you simply dont have any legs to stand on in your argument that Wii sales will somehow drop off.

Y'know I could be really mean (and say the exaggerated truth) and say Alice in Wonderland, Brain Fix and GTA III.

But from a Nintendo fan, I'm hoping Manhunt 2, GTA spin-off and some kind of FPS or adventure game.

The games are not anything I or any of my friends would play (wii sports being the only exception to date). I said if they get some good games that are not kiddie then I will buy one. I am hoping the wii will do a much better job of getting good games.

I was hoping for this back at E3 2005, and I'm still hoping for it today. The lower development costs of Wii should attract indie developers to create brand new IPs (eg. No More Heroes which is turns out to the one of the most hyped titles for Wii) and content. Because these companies are small, they would put a lot of priority and time to make their product sell since they have less reputation and less staff than other compnaies.

I'm really hoping devleopers like Irrational games or even GarageGames can make exclusive content to Wii. Because that's where Nintendo succeed the most from other company support apart from Nintendo themselves.

Now that the major devs seems to pledging support to the Wii, I wonder how the development community at large will respond to this news... probably by following their lead.

1st party Blockbuster Wii titles to come:

Mario Galaxy (the first true sequel to mario 64 which sold 14 million copies)

SSBB (SSBM sold 7 million on the cube... it will only do better on the Wii)

MP3: another game in the millions club

Brainage: Over a million sold as well.

Wii Health: This thing is going to explode in sales

Pokemon Battle Revolution: Speaks for itself

and in the future...

Nintendogs sequel : Sold over 12 million on the DS so far. A Wii ip is inevitable

Mario Kart: Speaks for itself

plus a bunch of other notables like Mario strikers,Wii orchestra, Mario vs. Sonic (think Wii sports 2)

Whether or not you or your friends like these games, they all sell huge.

If those are the only games you got on the Cube, the Wii is likely not going to be for you. You missed most of the Cube's best games, like the Metroid Prime Series, Melee, Eternal Darkness, Beyond Good and Evil (multiplat, though it is) were all spectacular games, and I wouldn't consider one of them kiddy, although they do have a less gritty, realistic feel to them.

I still think Wii will come 3rd. It's got the non gamer market covered but casuals/hardcore gamers will completely avoid the system.

I couldn't care less what analysts think. They also thought PSP would beat DS which was ridiculous to me at the time and look who turned out to be wrong.

You sound like the little kids I own on Halo 2.  The only people that are concerned about whether the games are kiddie or not are usually middle schoolers and maybe high schoolers who think they have to play mature games to be cool.  If your going through that faze in life thats cool and all.  You will grow out of it eventually.  If you dont think the Wii has anyone blockbusters coming out for it.......well your the prime example of a fanboy whos paranoid about what people think of him.

Have you been living in a basement somewhere?? Honestly...... The analysts have been saying for the past two years how the PS3 is going to DOMINATE.  Look what happened.  They are just now "changing" there minds and this article is a prime example of it.  It shows how developers are shifting focus also.  The Wii is going to come in first theres almost no question about it.  Its got Japan completely locked up and its looking good in the US and Europe.

Please name the wii blockbusters. I want to know for myself. I am not knocking the system, I just think What I have seem hasn't made me want a wii. The games are not anything I or any of my friends would play (wii sports being the only exception to date). I said if they get some good games that are not kiddie then I will buy one.

I waited until last year to get the gamecube because for a long time they didn't have anything I liked. Then they released day of reckoning 1 and 2 and I quickly purchased those games and the cube, and then RE4 and I got that. However, those were the only games I owned for the cube. I am hoping the wii will do a much better job of getting good games.

For one I am an adult so don't assume you know anything about me. Fanboy to whom? I owned all 3 systems last gen with the cube being last and i own both a 360 and a ps3. Why don't you look at my profile and see the game I have played or currently playing before opening your mouth about things you know nothing about.

I still think Wii will come 3rd. It's got the non gamer market covered but casuals/hardcore gamers will completely avoid the system.

I couldn't care less what analysts think. They also thought PSP would beat DS which was ridiculous to me at the time and look who turned out to be wrong.

I didn't avoid the system. Yeah before the PSP launched, but once it became clear who owned Japan all the speculation shifted to the DS winning

Did this guy just say that casual gamers will avoid the Wii?

lmao

Casuals want GTAIV, GT5, Halo 3, games like that. Wii doesn't have them so yeah, casuals will avoid the Wii.

what are you talking about? two of the games you mentioned are first party? Ofcourse the Wii wont get Halo, or GT5.... GTA on the other hand... I think the Wii will get a GTA game.

I have yet to see any games that are decent. Until they get some real games I will be holding out. This is the year of the wii, but once people begin to see great games on the 360 and the ps3 who will want to stick with the wii? Esp when the 360 has a price cut that would make the consoles (low end 360 wise) the same price!!!cjnwo4life

Looked at your profile and you definitely fit the desciption of a "Wii basher".  Also like I said before the Wii has a plethora of blockbusters unlike what you may like to think.  Another thing that makes the Wii fun is if you have a girlfriend.  Girls actually like to play the Wii unlike other systems.  Additionally if you have any buddies that could come over and drink with you while playing the Wii that helps also.  Your whole "kiddie" fascination thing with the Wii just strikes me as wrong because theres a multiple great games on the Wii if you can get past "its to kiddie" idea.

You would have figured that developers would have grasped that a 600 dollar console would have pooptastic console sales as well as crummy video game sales.

E3 should have been the light to developers eyes but they were still blinded. Even the launch didn't part the blindness for several third parties.

A lot of third parties have been shown to have a profound lack of faith in Nintendo. Their faith in Sony has been utterly shattered and Microsoft's promises of prophecy have been shown to not be true. jedigemini

U.S. and Japanese sales of Wii players totaled 1.47 million in January and February, said market researchers NPD Group Inc. and Enterbrain. PlayStation 3 tallied 604,331, while stores sold 584,329 of Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 consoles. Wii is also leading in Europe, said London-based researcher Screen Digest.

It didn't say that Nintendo's domination of the industry has begun, it said that Nintendo is making a come back and developers who started developing for the Wii early are now reaping the rewards and other developers are now playing catch-up.

Dude, that is pure denial.   From Wikipedia, the top selling non-bundled games of all time:

  1. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES - 18 million)[25]
  2. Super Mario Land (Game Boy - 14 million)[25]
  3. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2 - 14 million)[117]
  4. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2 - 13 million)[118]
  5. Super Mario 64 (N64 - 11 million)[25]
  6. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (PS2 - 11 million)[109]
  7. Grand Theft Auto III (PS2 - 11 million)[118]
  8. Gran Turismo (PS1 - 10.5 million)[109]
  9. Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES - 10 million)[25]
  10. Final Fantasy VII (PS1 - 9.8 million, includes Final Fantasy VII International)[110]
  11. Gran Turismo 2 (PS1 - 9.34 million)[109]
  12. New Super Mario Bros. (DS - 8.64 million)[72]
  13. Nintendogs (DS - 8.53 million approximately, 5.0 million in Europe,[90] 2.1 million in US,[91][92] 1.43 million in Japan)[93]
  14. Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day! (DS - 8.51 million)[94]
  15. Mario Kart 64 (N64 - 2.24 million in Japan,[56] 6.23 million in US only,[59] approximately 8.47 million)
  16. Donkey Kong Country (SNES - 8.30 million)[57]
  17. Pokémon Yellow (Game Boy - 3.16 million in Japan,[56] 5.10 million in US,[58] approximately 8.26 million)
  18. Super Mario Kart (SNES - 8 million)[25]
  19. GoldenEye 007 (N64 - 8 million)[60]
  20. Tomb Raider II (PS - 8 million)[40]
  21. Halo 2 (8 million)[40]

Ok, so lets look.  Out of the top 21 best selling non-bundled games of all time, 11 (green) are owned by Nintendo.  For those that noticed I highlighted Donkey Kong Country in green for Nintendo...that's right.  Donkey Kong the character is infact owned by Nintendo, though DKC was developed by Rare.  The rights are Nintendo's hence why it's on the VC.  Anyway, another 5 (yellow) have or will be showing up on a Nintendo system.  That leaves only 5 (red) that will never show up on a Nintendo console.  Out of the top 21 best selling games/franchises ever, over HALF are Nintendo's.  And another quarter of them can potentially show up on the Wii.  Casuals only interested in GTA, Halo, and GT?  lmfao, dude

Using the sales data for the newest installments of the PS2 to give a more accurate look at (fanbase) put together = 26.84.  Now how many of them would pay $600 to see the next installment?   Btw I even added mgs3 but of course not Halo 2.

The list means nothing.

What was the best selling series of last gen? GTA.

Which console doesn't have GTAIV? Wii.

Not to mention the 2nd and 3rd best selling series of last gen, GT, and Halo, both of which aren't on the Wii too.

Casuals only interested in GTA, Halo, and GT? lmfao, dude

The list means nothing.

What was the best selling series of last gen? GTA.

Which console doesn't have GTAIV? Wii.

Not to mention the 2nd and 3rd best selling series of last gen, GT, and Halo, both of which aren't on the Wii too.

GTA and Halo are NOT nearly enough to turn around Sony and MS's chances in this console war, esp when considering Nintendo has an even larger selection of million selling first party franchises.

I still think Wii will come 3rd. It's got the non gamer market covered but casuals/hardcore gamers will completely avoid the system.

I couldn't care less what analysts think. They also thought PSP would beat DS which was ridiculous to me at the time and look who turned out to be wrong.

jedigemini

Did this guy just say that casual gamers will avoid the Wii?

lmao

Casuals want GTAIV, GT5, Halo 3, games like that. Wii doesn't have them so yeah, casuals will avoid the Wii.

Dude, that is pure denial. From Wikipedia, the top selling non-bundled games of all time:

  1. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES - 18 million)[25]
  2. Super Mario Land (Game Boy - 14 million)[25]
  3. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2 - 14 million)[117]
  4. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2 - 13 million)[118]
  5. Super Mario 64 (N64 - 11 million)[25]
  6. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (PS2 - 11 million)[109]
  7. Grand Theft Auto III (PS2 - 11 million)[118]
  8. Gran Turismo (PS1 - 10.5 million)[109]
  9. Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES - 10 million)[25]

btw its only a matter of precious time before GTA hits the Wii.

[QUOTE="cjnwo4life"][QUOTE="jedigemini"][QUOTE="cjnwo4life"][QUOTE="Grodus5"][QUOTE="cjnwo4life"]Unless the wii can get good QUALITY games it will be ocnsidered a fad that will see sells fall in 2008. I have yet to see any games that are decent. Until they get some real games I will be holding out. This is the year of the wii, but once people begin to see great games on the 360 and the ps3 who will want to stick with the wii? Esp when the 360 has a price cut that would make the consoles (low end 360 wise) the same price!!!MasterChumly

Wait... Don't all sales fall after a year they were launched? Great games? Try Super Paper Mario, TP, Smooth Moves, and Truma Center that are already out, then Galaxy, Corruption, Brawl, Fire Emblem, and Battle Rev that are coming out?

For one I am an adult so don't assume you know anything about me. Fanboy to whom? I owned all 3 systems last gen with the cube being last and i own both a 360 and a ps3. Why don't you look at my profile and see the game I have played or currently playing before opening your mouth about things you know nothing about.

I am not basher of the Wii so lets get that straight. I call it like I see it. You and I have extremely different views on the topic but i can respect what you had to say. You saw the type of games I like by looking at my profile and with that in mind you as a fan of the wii should be abe to tell me if there are any similar games out or will be out (please include titles so I can research) that I might have an interest. And you asked if I have a girlfriend since girls like the wii. for one I have a woman and yes she has shown interest in the wii but my 2 boys (13, 9) have decided they wanted to wait. We could have gotten that system back in dec but they said no for now. I told her I would do research, ask people what they think about the console, the games, and the future before we invest in yet another console. And just so you know, I just really got into gaming again after years of very little interest but the games over the past 3 years have actually gotten better and are now fun. (I do like fun games games i.e. guitar hero which all of us have not put down since I got it last tuesday). As for my friends coming over drinking that isn't something I do at home with children around. I so have 1 friend who has the wii and I have played it but even he told me to wait before getting it. I will agree that it was fun playing wii sports the couple times we did but the other games he had did nothing for me wanting the console. Maybe I should retract my kiddie comment and I officially do. I am just judging the current games on the wii and I am waiting for something really good (if it's great then even better but I will settle). So if you can let me know that would be great.

Dude...lmfao GTA is COMING to Wii.  Rockstar has 3 games in development.  It may not be GTA4, but it will be a GTA nonetheless.  Halo is a great game, but a little overrated.  It only appeals to a specific group of gamers.  It sells great, but Mario and other franchises are there to counter it.  New Super Mario Bros outsold Halo 2.  Nintendo, when it's firing on all cylinders, is a mighty force.  With the way the Wii is going, Halo 3 is going to look pitiful against the tsunami of Wii games on the horizon from both first and third parties.

The Wii is going to die out buddy, it s jsut a matter of time now. Sure it seems fun to play at first, but it is crap for hardcore gamers. Only three types of people buy the Wii in my perspective: people who are just breaking into the gaming society, people whoa re rich enough to afford multiple systems (Wii + 360/PS3), or little kids with ADD/ ADHD.Setsa
Just like all systems die out?

U.S. and Japanese sales of Wii players totaled 1.47 million in January and February, said market researchers NPD Group Inc. and Enterbrain. PlayStation 3 tallied 604,331, while stores sold 584,329 of Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 consoles. Wii is also leading in Europe, said London-based researcher Screen Digest.
