BREAKING NEWS: Sony Is Working on a New Playstation (CONFIRMED)

And Sony has confirmed that they're working on a new Playstation:

Sony is working on new hardware in the Playstation family, Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has revealed The hardware is supposed to be an 'all new concept,' and is being worked upon behind closed doorsin full collaboration with Sony's studio network.

It's most likely that this new hardware is the long fabled successor to Sony's PSP handheld, which is now needed more than ever with the impending launch of the 3DS, successor to the bestselling line of DS handhelds.

Said Yoshida: "When Ken Kutaragi moved on and Kaz Harai became the president of SCE, the first thing Kaz said was, 'get World Wide Studios in on hardware development'.

"So he wanted developers in meetings at the very beginning of concepting new hardware, and he demanded SCE people talk to us [developers]."

When asked if the approach applied to new hardware, he added: "Yes, we are undergoing many activities that we haven't yet been talking about in public. Some future platform related activities."

Sony Computer Entertainment filed a new trademarks patent called the Playview, which was described as a 'Portable electronic device for receiving and reading text and images and sound through wireless Internet access and for displaying electronically published materials, namely, books, journals, newspapers, magazines, multimedia presentations.'

However, it added that the product would handle 'Computer game software recorded on optical discs'.

Sounds to be a PSP2, although it could be the PS4 as well. What do you guys think?

I just hope it's a home console rather than a handheld, I really would dig a PS4, and this generation is already five years old now. By this time, we should have some rumblings of the successors to the current consoles. What do you guys think?

It's not really a BREAKING NEWS revelation, unless anyone seriously thinks any of the companies are dropping out of the gaming game.

All three console makers are presumably working on successors to their systems.

If they are makinga a PSP2, it seems like they are adding more luxuries to go against Apple more than Nintendo unless they added on 3D screen with Touch-Screen and Motion Sensing for more gaming purposes. The inclusion of text messaging maybe for the masses, but why add it if people have phones?

A statement which reveals nothing we didn't already know.

Sony has R&D that isn't public knowledge yet. Some of this is related to successors we already know they're working on anyway.

The main take-home message of these comments by Yoshida shouldn't be "OMG Sony is developing future hardware", but "Huzzah, future hardware will be easier to develop for, since the software side are being consulted."

Luxuries are nice, but luxuries also can increase the price of devices. They can attract consumers with luxuries, but can they attract 3rd party developers to make games for their new portable device?

Having read the article it sounds like a cross between a PSP, an Ipod touch and a Kindle. Seems designed to go after Apple more than Nintendo.

The last thing anyone needs is a PS4, so if that unattributed "all new concept" quote is correct, it is probably Sony's next step for the portable market - and more than likely a PSP Phone rather than a conventional PSP2.

Them and Microsoft have probably been working on the next gen things for a while now. That doesn't mean they'll be released soon.aaronmullan

its not psp2,its ps4.MS and Sony already know what they will implant in them,they know 3 yrs ahead what will be "top",thats how it always been.360 was started 3 years before 360 was presented at e3,same thing about ps3.

I do think that is the psp2, however there has also been information before that Sony has been shopping around for potential new hardware for a ps4, it is nothing new tho, and the construction and finalization of such a console could take atleast a few years, before they are satisfied with the results.

But yeah, I do think Sony felt the pain of not launching at the very start of a generation, so while I do think it is a PSP2, they might really run for launch platform to the next gen... And that would annoy quite a few of the PS fans :\

Sony always start working on their next hardware really early in the gen, Ken Kutaragi said in an interview right after the PS2 launch that they were now beginning work on the PS3, I would imagine they have done the same thing this gen. Didn't Sony just say they weren't releasing a psp successor any time soon? either way I doubt they have been working on the next psp since 2006.

interesting. i hope its a console rather than a portable game system because ive lost hope in protable gaming- besides my ipod. if it is a new console, i hope its a ps4 because i wanna get one :D

i wouldnt exactly call news the fact that Sony are working on new hardware which might be the successors to PS3 & PSP... the same goes for MS & Nintendo who are surely working on new hardware.. (new Xbox, Wii2 etc)

well im hoping sony will keep the ps3 around alot longer

i think sony should have the new psp be not just for gaming /movies/surfing the web but also can be used as acell phone

that way song can haave a step up over the 3ds and can go after apple

That would be nice, having it free will be a great idea capturing the masses for they will not need a phone carrier to pay any subscription fee. However, they can also add it towards Playstation Plus as well.

PS4 needs to launch at the same time as the next X-Box if not before. I don't believe this generation will be lasting as long as Sony and Microsoft say. I expect new consoles in 2012 maybe 2013 at the latest.FlamesOfGrey
