Can we all admit now that Blu Ray was a terrible idea for the PS3 to begin with?

Sony is loosing so much money that they can't have a price cut for the PS3, so as a result it's getting murdered by the competition this holiday season. It's games are not selling very well either. People seem to think of it primarily as a Blu Ray player based on BR disc sales vs. PS3 game sales.

If the PS3 would have just stuck with plain ole dvds from the start like Nintendo and Microsoft this gen they could have started off on a good foot at say $400. By now they would be selling PS3s at $299 or less and be competitive or even on top right about now.

Does anyone still think Blu Ray was the right move for the PS3?

I guess, but I like that it plays Blu-Ray, and I wanted a lot of games anyway, so I guess business wise, but as a consumer, I'm a happy camper, they might have lost exclusives, but it was mostly titles going multi-plat, so I don't really care.

Maybe it is just bad timing with the economy, I actually like having a blu-ray player. Although it hardly serves a purpose for gaming atm.

They should've released the PS4 or whatever with Blu Ray while the production cost are lower. Hopefully Sony will get through, but they're having a tough time right now.

I wanted HD movies anyway, and using Blu-Ray in PS3 helped bring a swift end to a format war that should probably never have happened in the first place. I get to watch HD movies on my PS3, and the HD format had the full backing of the movie industry rather than fragmented. Also, MGS4 was badass and it pushed the format pretty friggin' hard.

What's hitting Sony harder than anything else is the economic crisis. Everything is taking a hit, especially the makers of high-end consumer products like Sony.

I'm glad you're enjoying the feature but wouldn't you give it up for the betterment of the company overall? Sony could have just as easily separated the two products instead of a mandatory combination, you could enjoy BR movies on a stand alone player and millions more gamers could have a PS3 with possibly a stronger library.

I agree. Not to mention Blu-Ray reads games a bit slower, making us need those installs. Blu-Ray movies are nice, but I would prefer my games without the installs.

$300 console + $250 blu-ray player is a bigger hit on my wallet, while I want Sony to succeed, I don't think the library would have changed that much, I think few people expected the Wii to sell as much as it would, and if the PS3 lost titles anywhere, it would be to the Wii, and they can't be much improvements on their PS2 counterparts anyway.

Well its good for us because the PS3/Blu-ray combo is probably the best value you could find for a blu-ray player and some quality games.

No, I've actually had longer load times on 360 games 99% of the time, even on the PS3 games that don't have installs, I never notice any sort of long load times, ever.

I've never experienced that. In almost every game that I've played for both my 360 and my PS3 the load times have been exactly the same, with no worth mentioning difference. Except those awful installs though.

I like the Blu Ray movies and all, I don't think it was the best choice. Sony better pull through though. How else will I entertain myself watching lemming, cows, and fanboys fight each other after watching the Dark Knight for the thousandth time in two days?

Yeah but they didn't have to run the Playstation brand into the ground to launch thier BR format. They could have just had seperate products from the start.

I realise hind-sight is 20/20, but think of what might have been: Persona 4 would have been made on PS3 instead of PS2 if the user base was bigger, SE would have kept FFXIII exclusive, DQX might have been exclusive to PS3, many more devs would have stayed exclusive to PS3.

I bet without Blu Ray being forced onto PS3 the system would have about 5 million or more extra owners right now.

You have this point wrong... Having blu-ray in the PS3 was for the benefit of sony in general as sony is not solely a gaming company. This helped them with the format war and now that everything is bly-ray they are making royalties on every movie sold. So putting the blu-ray player in the ps3 war basically a win-win situation for sony. Not so much for us though.

I care about all game companies and don't want to see them fail.

Remember when Sega bit the dust? That was a sad day for all gamers. I hope the PS3 don't end up like the Dreamcast did. Think of all the awesome games we missed out on when the Dreamcast went under. Since then Sega has developed only a few good titles for other systems.

Exactly without Blu-Ray there wouldn't be a PS3. People need to look at how the PS systems have evolved over the years.

No, Blu-Ray helped the PS3 sell through 2007 and with Blu-ray you dont have to deal with inferior quality multi-disc games.

dude SOny didn't care about gaming. They wanted the format to win against HD DVD and basically be the last video format. It worked. Now they just have to hope dvds die and HDTV really take off. This happens the money lost this gen will be small in the gains they make in the future.

Yeah but when you buy a blu-ray movie they do not make much from it compared to softwares sales of games. So basically you have people buy their system, which means they lose money on that, and only using it for movies. They do not gain much from that but it was not much of a choice bc they had to compete with HD-DVD.

I think Blu Ray is a smart move by Sony in terms of kinda making it "future proof" but of course it hasn't picked up considering it spent half the time battling with HD DVD, as such people were conflicted. It's more about moving TVs and players that make Blu Ray a worthwhile experience. Not every family out there has that nice TV or nice player to have all those neat products. As such Sony is suffering, hopefully as technology progresses, Blu Ray will become a definite standard, and HD graphics is accessible to everyone. Personally I didn't buy my PS3 for Blu Ray, the failure rate of the 360 at the time I bought it was sketchy so I didn't pick that up. Blu Ray movies is just a plus.

I'm kind of on the fence about how I feel about it. I love Blu Ray on the PS3, but at the same time I see how from a business standpoint Sony might have made a mistake. But then again, if Blu Ray takes off the way Sony hopes it does then they will probably make back alot of the money lost. I doubt they would risk Blu Ray if they didnt think there was a reward to reap.

It's just too bad that the PS3 couldn't use blu ray and dvd9 for games. It's like if they wanted the best polished highest quality games they can use blu ray but for other games they could've used dvd9 or what not. Oh well. Maybe next time. Oh yeah, they shouldn't have gutted the PS2 BC.

I pretty much agree. I didnt even care about Blu Ray until like a month or two ago when I got an HDTV. Once you watch a Blu Ray man... DVD just isnt the same. That sounds cheesy but it's true in my case.

you both are not using good sense. for one the ps3 is 400-500 dollars. blu-ray players have been selling for 200-300 or less. so how is blu ray the only thing keeping the ps3 a float when there are cheaper players out.

Sony doesn't have a good track record with that kind of stuff really(betamax anyone?)... however I think blu ray will eventually take off, once blu ray drives for the computer become more mainstream.

Good point. If anything I'd say Blu Ray is holding the PS3 back... because it keeps that price up.

Nope. If Sony didn't put the Blue-ray player in the PS3, I bet we'd still be going through the whole HDDVD, and blu-ray war. Sony had the movies to back up the idea of putting blu-ray in the PS3, because it's their head-liner blu-ray player.

[QUOTE="Bigboi500"][QUOTE="Gh0st_Of_0nyx"]Blu ray is the only thing keeping the ps3 afloat :lol:sireclaborn
Yes that is the case now, but I'm saying if Sony didn't included it in the PS3s from the start would they be in this poor situation now?

you both are not using good sense. for one the ps3 is 400-500 dollars. blu-ray players have been selling for 200-300 or less. so how is blu ray the only thing keeping the ps3 a float when there are cheaper players out.

Sony just hyped the dark knight release as one of its major holiday releases. There software sales are in the toilet so what do you think ps3 owners are buying the ps3 for ? a Nice doorstop ? No its the blu ray.

I love Blu-Ray The PS3 is the best deal going for gaming! Wi-FI out of the box large HDD, Blu-Ray player and free online play. I am having trouble finding a downside to this for $399.00

[QUOTE="Franklinstein"]Uh, to be honest, Blu Ray isn't the reason I bought it, but I definately love the fact that I have one, Blu Ray is such a good picture, it's simply amazing.carljohnson3456
I pretty much agree. I didnt even care about Blu Ray until like a month or two ago when I got an HDTV. Once you watch a Blu Ray man... DVD just isnt the same. That sounds cheesy but it's true in my case.

Agreed as well. I stuck in The Departed (which I've already watched on DVD) and my eyes were glued to the screen. It's just, significantly much better.

Sony could have and should have followed MS' example and made the BD player an add-on attachment. Then their gaming system could have been launched 6 months earlier (it was delayed because of the BD diodes) at a much lower price point and it would be a heck of a lot more competitive today.

And they could still have released a BD attachment for relatively cheap for those who wanted it. The attachment would still have been the best BD buy and they would still have won the format war, since all they needed was relative parity in unit/player sales and they won the day through their movie studio strategy anyway (e.g. even if they only sold half as many add-on drives they still would have won)

As well, they made the decision to include a standard HDD so they already had a storage advantage over the 360. And they wouldn't have needed so many installs anyway because most of those are directly related to the BD read/transfer speed.

The only thing they would have given up is the potential multi-disk issue (see my comments on a standard HDD) and the security/scratching aspects of the disks themselves. Minor value reductions compared to what they have given up because of timing and price.

Sony's strategy was disastrous and poorly thought out from the beginning.
