Console players should love PC game mods too.

[QUOTE="EvanTheGamer"][QUOTE="ducati101"] And here we have another unimformed post by this user, doesn't get old :)rpgs_shall_rule

Please tell me where to find the 1% which are actually good.

And only 1% of all games ever made are good. Your argument fails.

*yawn* are there any serious PC people here? Or are they too busy making crappy mods? Probably the latter.

I love how console-only gamers dismiss mods, and then swarm to DLC. Mods are free DLC....

I think this discussion won't go anywhere, anyway. Of course console players know mods are awesome; they would love to have them, but since they can't, and would rather be skinned than have to recognize the PC any advantage, they pretend mods suck/are irrelevant.

Just an immature posture; you can be sure that some day, when consoles at last enter the 21st century and support mods, they'll claim ownage over PC gaming

SW__Troll

This is a shining example of elitism - assuming that people only hold the opinions they do because they can't have what you have (which is in and of itself ridiculous; if we wanted mods that much, wouldn't we just switch?).

I don't know; everyone's always telling me that all I need to do is stick a GPU in my desktop and I'm off and running. So which is it? Would console owners switch? Hmmm, how many times I've heard "It's too expensive", or "it's too complicated". You can't act like it's somehow easy to just switch to PC gaming.

Oh, I don't know; I keep hearing about how all I need to do is pick up a cheap GPU, stick it in my computer, and presto! I'm a PC gamer. So which is it?

You know better than that dude. Yes bearing in mind what type of PC you have (not ancient), an old $50 graphics card will give you better visuals than either console. That's beside the point, cos anybody can be a PC gamer with or without investment. From the countless indie titles and beyond. The TC's orignal post has been distorted, he never said you have to love mods. Just that they have helped shape gaming, which is pretty hard to dismiss.

Team Fortress is an excellent example !

It began as a mod & it embraces the mod community when it was (its F2p now) a full retail release.

Valve took a lot of weapon models & skins & maps from the community and put them in game.

I honestly can't understand all the hate against mods when there are so many great examples that get ignored.

I absolutely love mods and have a huge amount of respect for people that tirelessly use their own time and money to produce something for everyone else to play FOR FREE or for very little profit. Much love to all of them, without them console gaming would be even worse than it is and PC gaming would take a massive hit in the quality level and longevity.

Console gamers no doubt do understand that it's a very important part of the gaming industry, and if they deny it then they are morons (which I doubt many would at all).

Maybe because you prefer the 'console' experience? I never said you secretly wish to have mods, although it wouldn't be a bad thing if it was available on consoles! I just agreed with TC, that mods have helped/shaped game development and gaming in general.

Bad Company 2 PC sold more than the PS3 version a tittle less than the x360 version. If Dice / EA are surprised by the numbers of Battlefield 3 PC, then it must have vastly surpassed each console sales.

So it still requires you purchasing hardware, and tampering with your PC. How does it refute my point?

Your answer is actually my point. Perhaps the person I originally responded to should consider that not every wants what they do, and their wants stem from genuine preference and not jealousy? Just a thought.

[QUOTE="KC_Hokie"]Yes it is...an ARTS to be specific. Again, a subgenre of a subgenre....supposedly. KC_Hokie

Except its not, you have no idea what your talking about as per usual. How many RTS's have you seen where you only control one unit.....? Dota has more in common with a game like Diablo then with RTS's.

The camera angle doesn't change the genre.

who said anything about camera angle???? if anything thats the only thing thats still similar. you seriously have no idea what your talking about...the gameplay itself is nothing alike.

Oh Indeed that's why I bought it up. It just seemed a but more unnecessary as the point you were responding to was indicating that 'anyone can be a PC gamer' which is well true, and their follow up post seemed to indicate that it wasn't in the context of 'you should be one'. Just saying you're leaping at their throat quite a bit there in terms of jumping to conclusions; they're not taking a jab at your preference.

The point of the thread wasn't do you use mods or what do you think of mods. It's that mods have expanded the gaming experience for even console players. If you don't play those games mentioned it's irrelevant. The point still remains that PC modders have changed the way games (even on console) have developed.

menes777

And I still don't agree.

That's ok, you don't have to. :) Many great gaming ideas started off as mods and will continue to do so. Whole genres have come from someone's mod. The only difference between a modding team and a development team is that one does it for a living. The other does it for fun. That's what makes gaming on the PC the better experience and leading the way in the gaming world.

many great gaming ideas will come from people, poeple already heavily invested in the industry, people that are mainly doing it for fun, whether it comes in the form of a new game or a mod, its people that do these things. The only reason why mods seem quicker, is because modders didn't have to build the game...

I think they dislike/ignore mods because they don't get mods. It's the same reason some PC gamers tend to disregard console exclusives; mods are sort of a PC-exclusive thingy, and people get touchy over exclusives.

TC is absolutely right. Many games use mods that were created for early games from normal users. The lasers in L4D2 was a mod from L4D1 that someone created for instance.

I can't imagine what Battlefield 3 would've looked like if the Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942 wasn't created (That mod is the reason why Battlefield 2 exists).

Also, wasn't zombies in Call of Duty originally a mod?

Another thing: Grant Collier, the late head of Infinity Ward said that Hardcore in CoD4 was inspired by all those realism mods, and he wanted to see what modders could do other than Hardcore mode.

Not only is this statement full of fail, but your sig comparing Live to WoW is also fail. I have access to all of my multiplayer games for free as a PC game. I can also list you a bunch of completely free PC games if you would like. For now, check out Firefall.

So extra content for your favourite game is not a good thing?

I've only played a few mods in my life (CS, DotA).

They're a plus. But they're also grossly overrated by hermits. If all mods suddenly vanish, it won't bother me much.

[QUOTE="Am_Confucius"][QUOTE="Chris_Williams"] i game on my pc and ps3/360, still just don't care about mods

Proving my point. Why would console-gamers care about mods when they can't use 'em?

i can use mods, i might be getting skyrim for my pc, if i can get a deal on it somewhere online, if not i'm getting it for the ps3, i know some awesome mods are going to be made for the game and i just don't care for them, just going to enjoy skyrim, if their is a crazy mod that seems cool i might try it, but mods are just fun to mess with and play around with, i don't invest to much time in them

There are too many games out there, and too little time for me, to spend my time on mods.

So extra content for your favourite game is not a good thing?

I've only played a few mods in my life (CS, DotA).

They're a plus. But they're also grossly overrated by hermits. If all mods suddenly vanish, it won't bother me much.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bungie#History All game developers are modders who get paid. You wouldn't have Bungie and Halo without some kid starting out in game programming by making a different version of Pong. Every single console game has it's roots in kid programmers hacking together something for fun.

A lot of missconceptions about mods make me facepalm. Mods represent the freedom to do almost anything you want with your game, prolonging the life of that said game almost indefinitely. It supports creativity, and passion. You can either inform your self on how to make these modifications or just add the infinite amount of constantly appearing ones from passionate people that love doing them. For console fans - think Little Big Planet on the biggest scale imaginable. How the *** can freedom be overrated? Damn.

It would effect you greatly indirectly.

Many video game designers, programmers and artists cut their teeth on mods - hell the vast majority working with triple A 3D toolsets.

The main problem I have with Mods is that they don't always work. Unlike an actual developer that runs as a business, a hobby doesn't necessarily have what you call Quality Control (at least at the level of a full blown developer, or something like the "Nintendo Seal of Approval" that every Nintendo game must get before being declared RTM). After all these things are just hobbies (i.e. they aren't High Priority stuff, so things like Real Life have priority over them), not businesses which have to get things right if they are to survive.

And that's the difference. An ordinary Mod as we know ofisn't expected to generate profit for its maker, and thus have the need to be worked on as a "priority project".
Eg how long are you willing to wait for that "Black Mesa Source" mod for Half-Life 2 (which was announced like 2 or 3 years ago and until now still has no release)?

It's comments like that that just make me sad. The whole purpose of this thread is not talking about playing the actual mods! Please read my post guys and understanding what I am saying.

If mods were to vanish, a good chunk of content and features in your current games wouldn't exist because the developers would not have copied/been inspired by them original mods. Also, a majority of our games wouldn't even exist. Most developers were modders.

Everybody should love mods. No More Room in Hell for HL2 came out a few days ago, I'm enjoying it much more than L4D2 and I paid a grand total of $0 for it.

Just watched the launch trailer. Downloading right now. Thank for the heads up ;)

Just watched it too and downloading.

Unfortunately it seems that reading comprehension isn't too strong of a subject in SW. Console players see a topic about mods and automatically go into damage control. They can only say things like "I don't like mods, they hardly ever work, this argument is silly". They don't actually read what you wrote. That mods expand gameplay and they will continue to do so in the future. Whether you like them or not is irrevelant. Someone, somewhere might be creating a completely new genre by modding a game. No one is forcing you to use them or like them, but they are driving force behind innovation. It's just sad how people feel threatened by what they don't understand.
