I got a 7600GT two years ago and it became obsolete in only a few months. My buddy got two 7900GTX's which became dated in under a year. What I'm saying is no matter which upgrade you buy it will become dated in such a short time. Consoles on the other hand have a shelf life of 5 years (on average sometimes more). I will not want to upgrade my PC every 6 months. I'd rather buy a new console every 5 years. It also saves lots of money.

I stopped reading at 7600 GT ... if you actually educated yourself on what you was buying, saved up that difference for a 7800+ at the time, it would of lasted you ALOT longer and you would of saved money, nobody to blame but your consumer ignorance.

Oh and 5 years consoles? tell that to my PS2 which died after 2 years.

Stupidly enough a 7900GTX > console GPUs so it's better than the console till thier launch thier next gen ones.

Those two GTXs run everything but Crysis at high settings... Just because some thing new and better is released doesn't mean that older cards are completely obsolete.

I haven't had to upgrade my single 8800GTX in over a year...

first off, 7900GTX in SLI will play any and all modern PC games on very high.

secondly, one of the strengths of PC gaming is that the games are never held back by hardware. some people on this forum game a few years behind for that very reason.

Oh yes it does. Your 8800gtx wont be able to run crysis at all once the 9 series comes out. And your cpu will stop functioning once the Intel releases their new cpu's.

Grats on buying a budget card. You cannot blame anybody else for your inability to research what you are buying. I had a 7600GT for a year , it played every game I bought but you have to tune the settings accordingly. You must be on of those guys that buys a budget card and expects to max out every game. Be realistic, you are not required to upgrade that often.

Will a $600 8800Ultra run games well 5 years from now? NO. The 6800Ultra came out in 2004 for over $500 and it struggles in todays games. A year or even months from now the 6800Ultra will not run any new games (Far Cry 2). A console costs less then most high end gpus and has a longer shelf life.

So you just disproved your first post by saying that you need to upgrade every 5 years.

Self-ownage at its finest.

EDIT: Oh and will the Xbox 360 or PS3 be able to play the Xbox 720 or PS4 games? NO.

Right, video cards become obsolete EVENTUALLY. But the upgrade cycle no longer needs to be less than a year. Sure, it might be neccesary every 3 years, but each time you do that upgrade, you simply leave the consoles in the dust.

Another person saying that Upgrading is a downside to PC gaming? Why won't this myth die?

While by no means the definitive post on the subject, I thought I did a pretty good job off addressing this, here:

an 8800ultra wont run the latest and greatest at the highest reses and max details in 5 year time no (and neither will a console mind, especially if its a game built with PC hardware in mind). but itll still be able to do a better job than any current gen console (ie running a game at 1280X720 @30fps with some details turned down and maybe 2X AA) if its a multiplat game.

I got a 7600GT two years ago and it became obsolete in only a few months. My buddy got two 7900GTX's which became dated in under a year. What I'm saying is no matter which upgrade you buy it will become dated in such a short time. Consoles on the other hand have a shelf life of 5 years (on average sometimes more). if u truly believe u have to upgrade every 6 months then ur just plain dumb and sli 7900gtx are by no means obselate true there is better hardware but that still a very viable graphics solution that will every game no problem and will max out everything expect crysis. and u say it that consoles are cheape in terms of hard ware yes but how many games do plan onbuying over that 5 year span? that should easily add up to several hundreds of dollars and also games are already 10$ more the pc games. and have playing games with the same graphics year after year with only minor improvments.

But that IS a good argument

For example all 8800's will produce graphics worse than the 360 and ps3 once the 9 series is out :)

This is my response to the OP

"A ford mustang GT is way better than a Dodge Viper because they are both sports cars but the mustang is 3.5 times CHEAPER. Plus it gets better gas milage and the maintenance is cheaper tooo! I don't get why people would waste their money on a sports car like the Viper when you can just get a ford mustang." ==== Some people just don't get gaming at all.

Consoles have PC's pwned. But of course the only true PC Gamers are those hardcore types who don't mind upgrading everytime the newer hardware comes out.

You're expecting last generation hardware to play the most technologically advanced game on the market? Find me an xbox that can play gears. Thats right you can't. You picked a bad time to upgrade, your fault. Not to mention you bought BUDGET CARDS.

he underestimates those cards and he doesn't know why there is a new card in a series every 5 months....really the card X600+ won't be obselete until the next series like the 7600 finally got token out by the 8600, but it still works fine, it will be come obselete when the 9600 comes out in end 2008 here. so the 7600 card lasted u what 2 and half years? And it was what 110 bucks?

I got a 7600GT two years ago and it became obsolete in only a few months. My buddy got two 7900GTX's which became dated in under a year. What I'm saying is no matter which upgrade you buy it will become dated in such a short time. Consoles on the other hand have a shelf life of 5 years (on average sometimes more). I will not want to upgrade my PC every 6 months. I'd rather buy a new console every 5 years. It also saves lots of money.nVidiaGaMer

Regarding 7600GT - some people use teh internets and do some researches before purchasing a PC or a PC component.

Regarding SLI'ed 7900 GTX, well, you're just full of crap.
