Modern_Unit

Wow, talk about taking years to catch up to 2nd place..

Pretty ignorant statement, NPD does not equal worldwide.

The only thing that surprises me is how little the ps3 outsold the 360 by. I was expecting the gap to be alot bigger.

the sad thing is that the x360 is till miles ahead in the biggest market in world US, so even if the PS3 matched the x360 userbase coz of higher JPN and EU sales, it won't be able to dominate completely.

Surprising to see the PS3 out sell the 360 last December. Very close numbers wish the NPDs would include Wal Mart numbers.

Why the heck is there almost never any PS3 games in the software list?

nhh18

Smaller userbase.

The low (relative) attach rate still suggest that there is more to it than that. ..Unless said attach rate has improved significantly?

I guess now it makes sense that the november numbers were largely due to all those banned 360s. I think MS has to ban more users soon to be back on top. Who the hell keeps buying the Wii? Is like instead of people commiting to a gym the first months of the year they are now buying a Wii with Wii Fit to shovelware it in a couple of months.

And while people fight over who has sold the most units, who is actually profitable here?

[QUOTE="Brownesque"]Can anyone explain to me why the Xbox 360 is still matching Playstation 3 sales? No one is buying the best Xbox release of the year, Forza 3, and Halo 3 ODST is scarcely capable of selling systems, whereas everything else worth a damn released this year is multiplatform. This is easily the worst Xbox 360 year since 2006.... They have the same price and yet one carries inherently more value.....so why isn't it mopping the floor with the Xbox?nhh18

Xbox 360 has more popular franchise (halo odst compared to uncharted 2), cheaper, and is made by a company that has a stronger marketing force (microsoft has a much larger appeal in america than sony). So it should be outselling more.

This doesn't make sense because the Playstation brand has sold considerably more units than any other system in history.... Between the PS1-PSP, you have how many hundreds of millions of units sold? The market penetration of PS1/PS2 was absurd. Brand recognition was probably the only thing keeping the PS3 alive through the $400-600 price range. And as I understand it even though Microsoft penetration into the OS market is enough to consider it an unassailable fortress, this doesn't necessarily translate to success in the console market, as we can see with the failure of the first Xbox to turn a single dollar profit or even compete with the PS2. And I'm not certain Microsoft really has the strongest marketing, but I do know there is a very strong grassroots association all over this country with the Xbox 360 and games with mainstream appeal attracting "core gamer" demographics that doesn't exist with the Playstation 3. 360 also does have the most popular franchises, you're certainly right about that, but I assumed that because ODST was a far more minimal release than Halo 3 that it wouldn't affect the consumer that hadn't already bought a 360 for Halo 3.

The king has retured. Major beatdownby theTREY over the 360. PS3 probably would have completely destroyed the 360 if it wasn't for major PS3 shortagesand 360 replacement buys (RROD and Microsoft banning those accounts) ! But with that being said , 360 is still DEAD LAST for the month anyway where it belongs. TREY 4 LI4E!

Sales matter people.

Nike_Air

But too bad the "Trey" is in last.

the x360 has a more social vibe to it? people prefer the x360's UI or controller? loads of possibilities.

My personal explanation is the "sold to retailers" versus "sold to customers" distinction. My guess is that MS simply wanted to sell consoles to retailers.

I do not believe that is the case.

http://news.spong.com/article/19131/SCEE-Clarifies-PS3-Install-Base-Maths

Specifically we reported that Chris Lewis (Microsoft's vice president Interactive Entertainment Business for Europe, the Middle East and Africa - EMEA) had stated that Xbox 360 was one million units ahead in EMEA, and he had also referred to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's (SCEE) method of calculating its own install base.

"We count installed base differently to (SCEE). We count the number of units in the hands of consumers."

In the same link, SCEE replies by stating that they too count number of units in hands of consumers.

Actually, being you brought that up - MS's and Nintendo's definition of a sold console is one that is sold to retail. On the other hand, Sony considers sold consoles as those immediately place in their inventory and as such inflating their numbers. I don't remember my source so I cannot provide a link, and as such I'm not 100% sure if this is still true, but this is the last I heard.

EDIT: guy above me has the link with the info.

1. The PS3 only outsold the 360 by 50k so no, that doesn't make much sense.

2. MS hasn't been on top since Nov 2006. Sony hasn't been on top at all.

This must be a new record for both the Wii and DS for one month, not in the U.S., but worldwide. As for software, it is the usual Nintendomination, and it seems that New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold more copies than the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 combined.

I was walking past EB yesterday and saw the following:

  • Xbox 360 Elite + 4 games for $450 (where 2 of the 4 games you could pick from a selection which included Assassins Creed, Gears of War and Mass Effect)
  • PS3 Slim 120G + 1 game for $500 (the game was Ashes Cricket)

To the average consumer the 360 deal would be a lot better

Playstation 1 was not a DVD player and yet at its time was the most sold console ever, selling well over 100 million consoles and reasonably bludgeoning the competition. Part of Playstation 2's success was brand recognition, although early penetration can easily be at least partially attributed to the DVD player (due to the larger cost compared to the competition). You have a point about the popular franchises, but Microsoft was able to obtain them because they took on a strong market position whereas last generation Sony was able to obtain them from its predecessor which legitimately ripped them out of Nintendo's claws.

those games don't appeal to the consumer tbh. They only care about the big title releases, which are halo, gears of war, etc. Madagascar, and lego star wars aren't going to really entice someone to buy xbox 360 when they are in the bargain bin for 5 $ right next to the console

You have a point about the popular franchises, but Microsoft was able to obtain them because they took on a strong market position whereas last generation Sony was able to obtain them from its predecessor which legitimately ripped them out of Nintendo's claws.

playstation 1 had the most popular games. Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot, final fantasy 7, tomb raider, etc. Sony marketing caused it to be much more successful. Sony hasn't able to create a franchise game at the moment for playstation 3.

this is wrong. Attach rate is about the same as xbox 360.

nhh18

The last time I saw attach rates released the 360 was 8 something and the PS3 was only 4 something quite the difference, do you have anything showing otherwise.

Reggie won the bet!

I wasn't surprised at the Mario sales though.

What surprised me were the Wii and DS sales.

They have the same price and yet one carries inherently more value.....so why isn't it mopping the floor with the Xbox?daqua_99

Assassin's Creed, Gears of War, and Mass Effect have each been $20 apiece all throughout 2008. I sincerely doubt that the PS3 slim 120 gigabyte, which retails for $300, could be bundled with a (possibly) $60 and completely unpopular game and magically have it's price inflated to $140 above cost (half the cost of the system itself). Are you sure the bundle was a PS3 slim (MSRP 300) and a single game for $500?

Why the heck is there almost never any PS3 games in the software list?

EndorphinMaster

It's often bought as only a Bluray machine.

No actually its the smaller userbase.

Wii is still thriving...i know it seems fan boyish but i want it to fail so badly. I get so angry when games like Wii Fit do good. I just feel as that Sony and MS are eventually going to go with those type of games as well and basically kill the fun from games. Yeah i had a depressing day :P

[QUOTE="Brownesque"][QUOTE="nhh18"]PS2 sold more considering it was a dvd player, and had the most popular franchises out of the 3 (GTA series, Final Fantasy series, MGS series, etc). So come no surprise when xbox 360 obtain these games hardware sales of playstation plummeted.

Nintendo had Mario, Starfox, Donkey Kong, Super Smash, Goldeneye 64, Legend of Zelda, Perfect Dark.... I fail to see how Crash Bandicoot even halfway competes with any of those franchises and GT, FF7, and Tomb Raider are handily outclassed by all of them taken together.... As I recall the N64 was known for its high quality blockbuster titles.

The keyword there is probably "history" the XBOX brand is now well ingrained into American popular culture, while the PS brand still carries weight it is far less of a pop culture icon this gen. Both pale in comparison to the Wii though of course.

It had a year's headstart, competition free, more software at launch and now, and an online service from it's launch that was able to build a great deal of "all my friends have one" momentum.

You know what I just realized, Reggie is going to win his bet

ActicEdge

That's a relief; Geoff should have never made that bet with Reggie in the first place.

In regards to the sales, very nice to see all the consoles selling well. I'm surprised that the Playstation 2 managed to sell 300,000 more units. Seriously, who doesn't have one of these yet? =P

The attach rate for the PS3 was 6 when the 360's was 7, since then there hasn't been any info about Sony's attach rates, but I assume its risen just like the Xbox has.

[QUOTE="skinny_man_69"]

[QUOTE="Kennysolidsnake"] well considering its outselling the 360 in japan by average of 300k consoles a month and who knows in EU and pal territoriesToScA-

I was pointing out the fact that SOME people say that the PS3 will outsell the 360 WW by the end ofthis year. It is obviously selling extremely well (which it should considering it is finally getting high quality exclusive, and Blu-Ray certainly helps), but only beating the 360 by 50k in the biggest market isn't anything to get extremely excited about. Which, I am sure you weren't, right? ;)

Additionally, 360 had quite a lackluster year in 2009 as far as exclusive game releases go. In 2010, with a rumoured pricedrop and probably its most promising line-up since that of 2007, I'd be surprised if 360 doesn't take off. PS3's line-up is looking immense though.

The Xbox 360 might sell a few extra due to a price drop (is this even certain?) but I hardly see the games doing it. Like Heavy Rain I dont see Alan Awake selling consoles, neither do I see Halo Reach sell a whole lot more (those who wanted Halo from the beginning have most likely already bought an Xbox along with Halo 3) and then theres Mass Effect 2 - I highly doubt any of these 3 games will sell a lot of *extra* consoles. Sony still has GT5 coming which might sell some extra consoles but other than that I dont see any games (at this point in the game) selling a whole lot *extra* due to games being released. People claim GOW3 will sell **** loads and I doubt this too. But I guess we can all agree on a lot of good games are on their way be it for the Xbox or the Playstatation.

6.5 ps3, 6.2 wii, 7.5 xbox 360. This is april 22nd 2009. Wii attach rate is really 5.2 (includes wii sports).

Pretty evident that "shortage" that plagued the Wii so long doesn't exist any more. Still ... that many Wiis sold is ... wow.

The launch software for the 360 was why I didn't buy it. Call of Duty 2 and PDZ were the best titles at release. I had been playing CSS and Half Life 2. I played those two games for all of 30 seconds and never thought twice. The Xbox 360 had a pretty dismal launch lineup if you ask me. It was Gears of War that turned things. Without Gears of War, there would be significantly less momentum, in my view.

NDP are the NATIONAL number meaning the U.S. we all know the ps3 outsells the box everywhere outside the U.S. so this is significant. The US is what keeps the box afloat. if the ps3 continues to dominate the box in pal and asia and ties the box in the states it will be game over quicker than you think.
