Haha, Wii just completely shattered the PS2 record by over 700k. This is beast.

Stevo_the_gamer
Pretty evident that "shortage" that plagued the Wii so long doesn't exist any more. Still ... that many Wiis sold is ... wow.

I wonder what caused such a spike in Wii sales though. Was it New Super Mario Bros Wii?

Just out of interest, whats the margin for error for NPD numbers ?carlisledavid79
Listening to one of the latest 1up podcast they had a dev on there saying NPD numbers are sometimes up to 30% off when it comes to software sales.

No actually its the smaller userbase.

FIipMode

No actually it's because of the fact the many people bought it as only a Bluray machine, nothing more.

Attach rates prove you wring.

If you don't think that alot of people bought it just for Blu Ray you are wrong. When PS3 first came out it was one of the best Blu Ray players and was cheaper then the few standalones that were better. So alot of people did buy it JUST for blu ray sorry.

[QUOTE="Brownesque"] This doesn't make sense because the Playstation brand has sold considerably more units than any other system in history.... Brownesque

The keyword there is probably "history" the XBOX brand is now well ingrained into American popular culture, while the PS brand still carries weight it is far less of a pop culture icon this gen. Both pale in comparison to the Wii though of course.

It had a year's headstart, competition free, more software at launch and now, and an online service from it's launch that was able to build a great deal of "all my friends have one" momentum.

The launch software for the 360 was why I didn't buy it. Call of Duty 2 and PDZ were the best titles at release. I had been playing CSS and Half Life 2. I played those two games for all of 30 seconds and never thought twice. The Xbox 360 had a pretty dismal launch lineup if you ask me. It was Gears of War that turned things. Without Gears of War, there would be significantly less momentum, in my view.

I didn't necessarily say good software at launch, just more. But you're right, that's another thing that the XBOX has had going for it, it's had killer app(s) in the Gears games and Halo 3. Even more in it's favor it's killer apps have been attuned to the most popular genres this gen FPS/TPS.

I don't think the PS3 has really had a killer app yet, FFXIII was one in Japan I guess, but on a worldwide level I can't pick any particular piece of software as yet.

NDP are the NATIONAL number meaning the U.S. we all know the ps3 outsells the box everywhere outside the U.S. so this is significant. The US is what keeps the box afloat. if the ps3 continues to dominate the box in pal and asia and ties the box in the states it will be game over quicker than you think.

Both. The idea that the record setting NSMBWii had nothing to do with it is silly.

price drop.

I'm sure BOTH had a say in the matter, but I would guess that Mario was probably the most crucial element towards the boost in hardware sales. NSMBWii was the one thing the Wii really didn't have all year: a system-selling game. Seeing as how people were pretty familiar of the New Super Mario Bros. brand from the DS, I suspect that many owners of that system made the jump to the Wii because of NSMBWii's presence. Furthermore, the game was perfect for Nintendo's marketing strategy, since they had a high-profile title they could really be agressive with from a software standpoint, while still being able to slip in the fact that the Wii was less expensive now.

To think that people were actually underestimating the impact of a 2D Mario game in this day and age... :P

He just made it up :P. Every English based nation is xbox 360 strength(australia and england: the most similar culture to america), but other pal regions sony would brag about (germany, france, etc) for 2 years. So I would think a ps3 100 $ price drop, and slim would cause the sales to be a little higher on average like everywhere else in the world.

By looking at both the Wii's and PS2's best December numbers, not only the Wii shattered the PS2's best December record, but it did so by a margin of 1.1 million units.

You think ALOT of people bought a game console JUST for Blu-ray? Sorry no, a better term would be SOME people bought it for just Blu-ray. Like I said if ALOT of people bought it for just Blu-ray the PS3 wouldn't be second in attach rates.

6.5 ps3, 6.2 wii, 7.5 xbox 360. This is april 22nd 2009. Wii attach rate is really 5.2 (includes wii sports)nhh18

That 7.5 isn't the 360's actual Attach rate, its at 8.1 looking at your numbers, and thats still quite a difference in the long run.

Both. The idea that the record setting NSMBWii had nothing to do with it is silly.

NSMB wii sold 2.82 million, and wii sold 3.8 million. Even if was a 1:1 attach rate, 1 million consoles were sold otherwise. My bet is that a price drop and a better economy (last year wii had great numbers during the worst part recession) caused the console to sell this much.

[QUOTE="nhh18"]

[QUOTE="Brownesque"] Playstation 1 was not a DVD player and yet at its time was the most sold console ever, selling well over 100 million consoles and reasonably bludgeoning the competition. Part of Playstation 2's success was brand recognition, although early penetration can easily be at least partially attributed to the DVD player (due to the larger cost compared to the competition). You have a point about the popular franchises, but Microsoft was able to obtain them because they took on a strong market position whereas last generation Sony was able to obtain them from its predecessor which legitimately ripped them out of Nintendo's claws.Brownesque

playstation 1 had the most popular games. Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot, final fantasy 7, tomb raider, etc. Sony marketing caused it to be much more successful. Sony hasn't able to create a franchise game at the moment for playstation 3.

Nintendo had Mario, Starfox, Donkey Kong, Super Smash, Goldeneye 64, Legend of Zelda, Perfect Dark.... I fail to see how Crash Bandicoot even halfway competes with any of those franchises and GT, FF7, and Tomb Raider are handily outclassed by all of them taken together.... As I recall the N64 was known for its high quality blockbuster titles.

Crash Bandicoot sold 6 million or so. I know that's more than Starfox, Perfect Dark and Super Smash on the N64. Perfect Dark is what 1 million? At most 2 million. Probably Zelda and Goldeneye are the only two games above 6 million. Those are probably 7-8 million. Oh and Mario of course is tens of millions like always.

Oh snap. Looks like PS3 will be catching up to the 360 within the next few months with that hugemargin of a victory

skinny_man_69

well considering its outselling the 360 in japan by average of 300k consoles a month and who knows in EU and pal territories

I was pointing out the fact that SOME people say that the PS3 will outsell the 360 WW by the end ofthis year. It is obviously selling extremely well (which it should considering it is finally getting high quality exclusive, and Blu-Ray certainly helps), but only beating the 360 by 50k in the biggest market isn't anything to get extremely excited about. Which, I am sure you weren't, right? ;)

Considering the NA is pretty much suppose to be 360's Market, getting outdone there is a preety bad sign.

Also, 50K in the largest market is sorta off, considering it's alot more in the other markets.

The Wii sold more and made by far the most profit.

The PS3 sold less then the Wii, but more then the 360 and lost money.

The 360 sold the least and made a lot of profit.

Who's the real winner? Nintendo obviously. Not includnig the DS sales which are nothing short of scary.

We do?

Where are the European numbaz!!? :o

Im 100% sure that in Europe ps3 is outselling the 360 and ps3 is outselling the 360 in Japan as well, so overall ps3 is doing perfectly well, now Sony need to start with this new PSN i dont mind paying as long as they make it great. do it sony!!

Wow at the Wii and NSMBWii for outselling both the 360 and PS3 versions of COD: MW2. I remember trying to buy this game after Christmas and it was sold out almost everywhere around my area. Instead I got Muramasa.

BTW what was Reggie's bet?

I still think it's incredible that Europe has a bigger market for Sony than the US, yet the support Europe is given by them is abysmal.

I will say this, the banning spree did not appear to have a significant impact on sales if we compare dec to nov for 360 this year vs last year. That's a bit surprising for me.
