"Dontnod Entertainment's Remember Me set in Neo-Paris 2084, the game stars Nilin, a memory hunter got a lot of dismissals from publishers thanks to its female lead. For some publishers, successful games and male leads are synonymous, so when creative director Jean-Max Morris and his crew were shopping for publishers, this spurred the cold shoulder.

"We had some that said, 'Well, we don't want to publish it because that's not going to succeed. You can't have a female character in games. It has to be a male character, simple as that,'" Morris told The Penny Arcade Report. Capcom, of course, didn't seem to mind.

Morris said the decision to have a female lead was "something that just felt right from the beginning" of development. "It's one of those things that we never looked at from a pure, cold marketing perspective because that would have endangered the consistency of the whole game." That's not to say Morris didn't receive the advice to switch Nilin from a girl to a guy, but changing Nilin would've been relatively impossible for the stage Remember Me was at. Still, hypothetically that change would've brought its own set of problems.

One anecdote Morris talked about is a scene where we see Nilin kiss a man and Morris was told that scene wouldn't work if she was switched to a guy, even though technically it would be far from the first depiction of same-sex romance in video games. "We had people tell us, 'You can't make a dude like the player kiss another dude in the game, that's going to feel awkward.'" For Morris, that response is puzzling. "I'm like, 'If you think like that, there's no way the medium's going to mature,'" he said. "There's a level of immersion that you need to be at, but it's not like your sexual orientation is being questioned by playing a game. I don't know, that's extremely weird to me."

lolno.

Seriously, I think a lack of female leads needs to be addressed. I've seen sub-6' women take out guys 6'+ on top of doing everything any other male lead can do.

Only female characters I find realistic are the female Sims managing my Sims kitchen. I can't suspend my disbelief long enough to enjoy something like Mirror's Edge or Tomb Raider.

I don't mind them at all. I would like to see more actually. When given the chance I do play as a female character in both single player and online mods.

Women arent interesting. Should be all male leads. Basicly women are the docking station and men get out there and do stuff.

No not all. I like lead female characters like Samus Aran, Chun-Li, Lara Croft, Faith from ME, hell I even prefer the female Commander Shepard over the male.

Sounds like an attention cry for what looks to be an incredibly shallow and deservedly overlooked game.

Not at all, in fact a strong female lead is better than most of the meatheads we play as now. I think theirs a huge section of the Mass Effect fan base who think Femshep improves the game as a whole, and I would be inclined to agree. Not because ass, but because the voice actress makes the character better because of it.

nope as long as the character doesint bug me. Though I will say I always pick a dude for games like mass effect mainly cause I put myself into that character and im a guy.

Men will always play a female lead character as long as there is a choice to make out with another Female NPC. I'm surprised more developers haven't picked up on this.

No.

Heck, their even better than their male counterparts; espceially if it's a third person behind the shoulder game.

No.

I don't know any reason why I would. Whether the main character is a man, woman, gay straight, or an asexual monster doesn't matter to me at all. I care about the quality of the game first, and if the developer thinks that a woman or a gay man is the best fit for that role, then so be it. At the same time, using or trying to shoe-horn in an unconventional protagonist if they don't fit the story simply to draw attention and controversy isn't the right path either.

Only if I'm supposed to relate to the lead to get the best experience. Like in RPGs usually. That's it though.

Not only that but in a lot of cases you need a Female Protagonist in order to tackle certain issues without people getting in a huffy and calling misogyny.

Don't got a problem with them at all.  I'm indifferent towards male or female leads, I don't care.  As long as their games don't suck.

Only when done poorly(Metroid: Other M), when done correctly(ala Dreamfall or Beyond Good and Evil) it's a non issue like a male character. Bad characters/writing/plots bother me, but not the gender/theme/concepts.

:P No I prefer female leads, they are nicer to look at. Anytime I play a 3rd person game with an option to pick male or female, I usually pick female. If I'm gonna stare at an @ss for hours I'd rather have it be a shapely female one.

90% is too low of a number, but sure. It doesn't take very long into a game for me to start ignoring the plot unless it's stupid enough to be fun at least to pay attention.

Individuals would generally say they don't, but that doesn't mean the market at large won't react differently to them.

As Tommy Lee Jones said: a person is smart, people are dumb.
